About

Bluesy singer/songwriter Bonnie Raitt has worked long and hard for her multiple Grammy Awards, hit singles and chart-topping records. Since her 1971 eponymous debut, the California-born performer and long-time activist has steadily maintained a music career, albeit with definite peaks and valleys. The red-headed songstress, one of the only women of her time to play guitar using the bottleneck technique, unleashed seven albums in just nine years, though her big commercial break came with her 10th studio set, 1989’s “Nick of Time.” That 11-track collection, produced by Don Was, earned three Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year.

Not only has the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer tackled multiple U.S. tours and international runs, but she’s also a frequent participant in events of social activism, such as Farm Aid and Amnesty International concerts.

Raitt’s 16th full-length album and most recent studio release, “Slipstream,” hit retailers in 2012. Not only did ticket sales for the support tour soar, but Raitt also landed the best-selling blues album of the year and took home the Grammy for Best Americana Album.

  • BONTAJ--- incredible talent in one venue !!

by OldSchoolBlues on 8/28/09Minnesota State Fair Grandstand - St PaulRating: 5 out of 5

We went as a family the "old schoolers and the youngsters"-- our 20 something son who plays bluegrass was so impressed with Taj and his band ! He knew more of Taj's repetorie than we did . This group of young people are serious connoiseur's of the real blues, slow grass etc.... what a wonderful resurgence ! Of course , Bonnie's inevitable top class guitar and vocals were only more powerful with the beautiful tribute to her brother . This was a very personal thing we in the audience were priviledged to share. Not to mention the crazy talent Rickie Peterson brings into this-- Wow !! The ending duets were so much fun and a perfect culmination to an edgy concert that appealed to everyone. Thanks this has become one of the best memories in all of our years at the fair.

  • Fun live entertainment

by fiftysix on 8/28/09Minnesota State Fair Grandstand - St PaulRating: 5 out of 5

The last session, Taj and Bonnie played off each others personalities. Taj was dancing, twirling, jumping , inspiring the entire clan (fans) to stand up and wiggle, clap along. We all had smiles on our faces just watching the two of them jam. Even my spouce was stanking . JUST A FUN NIGHT for us old hippies.

Bonnie Raitt and Taj Mahal rocked the house. Outstanding performances by both artists that made for an unforgettable night.

  • BonTaj Roulet Review

by ConcertJunky on 8/28/09Minnesota State Fair Grandstand - St PaulRating: 5 out of 5

Ever since growing up immersed in blues, jazz, and rock'n'roll I've had seeing Bonnie Raitt live on my bucket list. Last night's performances from both Bonnie and Taj Mahal were at the very least phenomenal. About miway through her set alone Bonnie mentioned that each and every one of us should realize that there are moments to treasure. She of course was referencing the passing of her brother Steve. I however was thinking that this is one of the greatest nights of my life. I sharred it with my dad (a father's day gift) and it could not have been a more poinient moment. I had to take a deep breath, realize how lucky I was, and sway to the music.

  • BonTaj Roulet: Comfort food for the pop blues fan

by MethodistCabaretBoy on 8/28/09Minnesota State Fair Grandstand - St PaulRating: 3 out of 5

The crowd was polite toward Taj, but they were clearly there to see Bonnie. Neither star broke any new ground, but both were in fine voice, especially considering their ages (56 and 61, respectively). Bonnie's take on "I Can't Make You Love Me" was particularly strong; she gets a lot more air with the tone these days, but on that one she was strong and clear and the audience burst into cheers in the middle. My one criticism might be that there was not nearly enough of Bonnie and Taj just one on one. They did only 2 acoustic numbers together in the middle, and then Taj disappeared again until the very end, when he was simply a vocalist and maraca player. I would have traded this sort of window dressing for a couple more duet acoustic pieces.

  • Bontaj... a special evening

True professionals... talented, polished and at the same time open, honest and emotiional performances. For me, one of the best concerts ever.

  • Bonnie Raitt and Taj Mahal

by PAOB on 8/28/09Minnesota State Fair Grandstand - St PaulRating: 4 out of 5

Great concert. Beautiful weather, and a touching dediation to Bonnie's brother Steve. Was glad to be a part of it and a special concert for her brother in MN where she has a dedicated fan base. We love you here Bonnie. Thanks for all the years and you are still on top of your game. Hope to see you at the Fair next year as well.

  • BonTaj concert great

by Mummzie on 8/28/09Minnesota State Fair Grandstand - St PaulRating: 4 out of 5

The BonTaj roulet was great. As alway's Bonnie was soulful, humble and all around great. The combo I feel was a match made in heaven. What took so long for that pair up? Taj was true to his roots. The Mississippi bluesman was colorful, energetic, and his songs represent the best of the region. He's been around the block a few time I imagine.

  • Bon Taj ...Very Emotional

by Voodoo22 on 8/28/09Minnesota State Fair Grandstand - St PaulRating: 4 out of 5

Everything about this concert was great except for the sound mix. I could hardly hear Taj's vocals, and the guitar volumes were too low. The bass was more than prominent throughout all the sets, but it drowned out the other instruments and vocals. The vocal clarity was a little better for Bonnie, but still not as up front as I would expect. The emotion that Bonnie brought to the show was genuine and powerful. The concert had a very nice build to the very end.

  • too long and too slow

by electricfielder on 8/28/09Minnesota State Fair Grandstand - St PaulRating: 3 out of 5

enjoyed bonnie; not so much taj mahal whose song selection wasn't great. the seats at the fair were too close together with no arm rests. not good.

It was a great concert. How could it not! They are amazing performers and the bands

  • BonTaj Roulet was great

by Event on 8/28/09Minnesota State Fair Grandstand - St PaulRating: 5 out of 5

The state fair concert with Bonnie Raitt and Taj Mahal was very electric, Taj opened the show that started the energy going then moved into the soul seaching of Bonnie dedicating the concert to her brother Steve. The final set with both bands on stage had everybody charged up. It was to bad the people who put on the fire works show started shooting them off before the band was ready and the fans were ready to see them leave. Otherwise great show.

  • BonTaj Forever

by Jamagudy on 8/28/09Minnesota State Fair Grandstand - St PaulRating: 5 out of 5

This concert was magical. It almost felt like I had dropped in on a jam session of the worlds coolest musicians. They were so comfortable with each other and their music was full of soul...Bonnie' s voice soared out over the night sky with a depth and clarity that could never be captured on tape. Taj gave each song a very personal rendition, too. His voice kept telling the story in variety and tone and then emphazised with his wonderful facial expressions. And Rick Peterson seemed like the luckiest guy in the world , to get to play keyboard with Bonnie as well as back up on vocals. They were clicking. Her love for her brother was expressed without gloom. Made me wish I had known him, but also wish that Bonnie sing for me at my memorial someday.

  • Taj Rules

by hopkins on 8/28/09Minnesota State Fair Grandstand - St PaulRating: 5 out of 5

I know most people were there for Bonnie Raitt, who was grreat. I can't make you love me was a showstopper. HOWEVER, Taj is the coolest, crazy good singer -musician- interpreter ever. he is about 72. He never stopped moving. He was on stage the whole nite except for about 4 solo songs of Bonnie's. He has physically grown into his longtime identity of bluesman. He now looks the part, lined face, paunch, great hat. His voice is the same now as in the 70's. It was always gravelly and completely identifyable in 4 notes. He did she caught the Katy, of course the fishin tune, and with Bonnie sang about "some of you LA women you make me feel so doggone tired." He was mostly the blues, one carribean backup for Bonnie. When he was on stage people mostly listened standing up and dancing, especially at the end when Bon and Taj jammed together. I was disappointed in the Mpls. Star Trib review calling Taj Bonnie's opening act, and reviewing only Bonnie. That was not the concert I saw. For me, it was all Taj, Taj, Taj.

  • Fabulous

by mscoyote50 on 8/28/09Minnesota State Fair Grandstand - St PaulRating: 5 out of 5

Bonnie still has one of the most versatile voices out there - beautiful and sorrowful, edgy, growly. She is one of the best song sparrows - she can make you laugh, cry and just feel ready to get it on. Taj is still the master of Delta Blues. Their rocking blues together was magnificent. Both of the bands are top notch - Bonnie has added Ricky Peterson and he did the Twin Cities proud - as always! Not to be missed.

  • Great as always

by kathymn on 8/28/09Minnesota State Fair Grandstand - St PaulRating: 5 out of 5

Bonnie Raitt was wonderful as always. She mixed it up and did some new tunes I have not heard before! Loved it!!!! The opening group TaJ Mahal was very good musically, but has it's bass set so high that a lot of people close up left. Those of us that stayed ended up with headaches and neck pain. Thank god for advil!! I was glad to see that Bonnie's sound guys had the base set correctly.

  • One of the Best

by INDENIAL on 8/28/09Minnesota State Fair Grandstand - St PaulRating: 5 out of 5

One of the top two best concerts I have been to. The other was one of Stevie Ray Vaughns last with Joe Cocker when I lived in Anchorage Alaska. The emotions she felt and the compatability with Taj Mahal were unbelievable. These are two of my all time favorite artists and they did not dissapoint me or short the crowd. They played until you almost felt sympathy for their throats. The music flowed from two true artists of this time. I wish more of the younger generation showed their appreciation for this music.

  • BonTaj Roulet was fabulous

by AvidBonnieFan on 8/28/09Minnesota State Fair Grandstand - St PaulRating: 5 out of 5

I have seen both Bonnie (at least 10 times) and Taj separately - and was a little skeptical about their styles melding - it was unbelievable!!! Plus the added bonus of Ricky Peterson topped it all off - Bonnie's You Can't Make Me Love You with Ricky's piano solo was spellbinding - and I loved hearing Outside Man live.

  • great concert, bad sound guy

by jrayk on 8/28/09Minnesota State Fair Grandstand - St PaulRating: 4 out of 5

Bonnie was great, Taj was wonderful, but Taj's sound guy was awful. Bass was so overwhelming on his set that the music couldn't be heard or enjoyed. New board for Bonnie, new sound guy, and everything was great again. Taj's sound guy needs a refresher on clean, balanced, enjoyable sound.
