The Doobie Brothers Concert Schedule

The Doobie Brothers are an iconic American rock act who have run the gamut from mainstream rock to blue-eyed soul. The Doobie Brother's tour dates, which include their 2017 Summer Tour, 2015 Southbound Tour, and stretch back all the way to their 1983 Farewell Tour, have taken them across North America from the likes of Madison Square Garden to the Arizona Federal Theatre and seen them unite with powerhouse rock performers like Chicago, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Ted Nugent and more. Throughout their many incarnations, The Doobie Brothers have been known for their eclectic rock sound, fused with elements of country, R&B and folk music, along with their impressive vocal harmonization. The latter gained the group entry into the Vocal Group Hall Of Fame in 2004, while the former has seen the band sell some 40 million albums over their five-plus decades in existence. In concert, The Doobie Brothers thrill with their combination of electrifying guitar work, tight group vocals, and the occasional saxophone solo as well. The Doobie Brothers have won two Grammy Awards, both in 1979, for their songs "Minute By Minute" (Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group With Vocals) and "What A Fool Believes" (Record of the Year). They were also nominated for Album Of The Year for Minute By Minute in 1979, along with Best Pop Instrumental Performance for "South Bay Strut" in 1980.

The Doobie Brothers Background

The core of what would become the Doobie Brothers came together around 1970, when guitarist Patrick Simmons and bassist Dave Shogren joined forces with drummer John Hartman and guitarist/vocalist Tom Johnston. They toured the San Jose area, morphing into the acclaimed rock act they are today. They released their self-titled debut in 1971 and headed on their first national tour shortly thereafter. The Doobie Brothers' greatest success came during the height of the 1970s, when they released their classic 1973 album The Captain and Me, which included hits like "Long Train Runnin'" and "China Grove." The Doobie Brothers' sound changed to incorporate more soft-rock and soul influences during the Michael McDonald years, and the group continued releasing material to great success, cementing their place in the pantheon of popular 1970s acts. The Doobie Brothers' legacy puts them in league with contemporary groups like The Eagles, Journey and Fleetwood Mac and has seem them share the stage with other performers as diverse as Steely Dan and Earth, Wind & Fire.

    Best concert ever !

by Ed on 6/3/23Duke Energy Center for the Arts - Mahaffey Theater - St Petersburg

This was my very first time to hear them in concert. They did not disappoint and sounded as good as when they first started 50 yrs ago. The venue was awesome. The band performed at the highest level even without Tom Johnston. They honestly didn't miss a beat. The vocals were tight and on cue! It was disappointing Johnston was out due to a back issue and he was missed, but the band still sounded awesome !

    Great Show, Terrible Sound Engineering

    by R. W. on 5/31/23PNC Music Pavilion - Charlotte

This was my 8th Doobies concert. There is no question about their abilities and showmanship - they are my favorite band. The sound system and acoustics were atrocious. Several songs that I’ve listened to for 50 years were unrecognizable until the chorus. I was very disappointed.

    Disappointing Doobie Show

by Spider1969 on 5/30/23Duke Energy Center for the Arts - Mahaffey Theater - St Petersburg

We were disappointed in the May 26, 2023 Doobies Bros show at Mahaffey in St. Petersburg, FL. We have seen the Doobies many times and are big fans, but this show was not that great. We learned during the show that Tommy Johnston would not be with the band this time. He is a founding member and his vocal and guitar are very important. There was an obvious and ineffectual effort by the other guys to cover his parts - which didn't work. Then, the sound was simply awful. I know Mahaffey is not a particularly good sounding room, but the sound for this high-priced show was unacceptable given modern technology. All in all - quite disappointed for high-priced and touted 50-year reunion show.

    No Tom Johnston!!!!!!!

by Doobie Fan since 1970's on 5/29/23Duke Energy Center for the Arts - Mahaffey Theater - St Petersburg

So sad that Tom Johnston was unable to perform. Hope he gets better quickly. Fortunately the person sitting next to me mentioned this fact prior to the show starting. A public announcement should have been made prior to the show's start by the promoter but was not. What, did they think no one would notice??? God Bless you Tom and hope you get well quickly! We really missed you! Pat, John, Michael, and the rest of the band did a great job and the show was good.

Poor Sound Mix Diminishes Great Show

by DJ-CK on 5/29/23Duke Energy Center for the Arts - Mahaffey Theater - St Petersburg

For the second time in three rock shows at Mahaffey Theater, great on-stage performances by super-talented and energetic stars and a great set list were diminished by a poor sound mix. In our excellent seats, we could see clearly our beloved band, but could not hear or understand vocals or lead guitar solos; instead, all we could hear was the bass line…..so disappointing. Many around us raised the same observation, just as they did at a prior Elvis Costello show. We kept hoping that the mix would improve, but it never did. Too bad….that may be it for us for shows at the Mahaffey in St. Pete.

A Rockin' Good Show even without TJ!!

by Disneyboy on 5/29/23Duke Energy Center for the Arts - Mahaffey Theater - St Petersburg

The legendary RnR Hall of Fame DOOBIE BROTHERS is on their 50th Anniversary Tour. The band made a stop at the Duke Energy Mahaffey Theater, May 26th and had fans from GenX to Baby Boomers on their feet all night long. Although founding member Tommy Johnston, the heart, soul and voice was not in the line up due recent back surgery, the veteran band was rejoined with Michael McDonald. Co-founding member Patrick Simmons along with long time band members John McFee, and John Cowan stepped up to the plate filling in for their missing commrade. The 2-hour playlist was chocked-full of Doobie Brother hits that kept their fans out of their seats and a lengthy encore leaving us rockin' down the highway!!!

Great show -- only wish Tommy Johnston was there

by BizzyRae on 5/29/23Duke Energy Center for the Arts - Mahaffey Theater - St Petersburg

The Doobies ALWAYS impress. They bring warmth and energy and to my knowledge played EVERY major hit. Only disappointment was when they first came out one important member was missing. Where was Tommy Johnston??? So I hit Google, and turns out Tommy J is having back surgery. Boo hoo. I gotta admit, I missed his presence. I missed his vocals. The band was still amazing and probably over 50% of the attendees never knew the difference. Pat Simmons also explained Tommy's absence later in the show. Overall it was a great night! I hope they never retire!
