About

Bluesy singer/songwriter Bonnie Raitt has worked long and hard for her multiple Grammy Awards, hit singles and chart-topping records. Since her 1971 eponymous debut, the California-born performer and long-time activist has steadily maintained a music career, albeit with definite peaks and valleys. The red-headed songstress, one of the only women of her time to play guitar using the bottleneck technique, unleashed seven albums in just nine years, though her big commercial break came with her 10th studio set, 1989’s “Nick of Time.” That 11-track collection, produced by Don Was, earned three Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year.

Not only has the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer tackled multiple U.S. tours and international runs, but she’s also a frequent participant in events of social activism, such as Farm Aid and Amnesty International concerts.

Raitt’s 16th full-length album and most recent studio release, “Slipstream,” hit retailers in 2012. Not only did ticket sales for the support tour soar, but Raitt also landed the best-selling blues album of the year and took home the Grammy for Best Americana Album.

  • Sad and soulful

by Fishgish on 8/28/09Minnesota State Fair Grandstand - St PaulRating: 5 out of 5

I had never seen Bonnie Rait before. She talked about the loss of her brother and dedicated much of her set to him. The songs had a level of deep sadness that comes from living and loss. Friends have told me that she has come to MN many times before and her shows have featured her family. This show was different she was alone (without family) on the stage but she conjured the ghosts of shows past which was as beautiful as it was haunting.

  • See it if you're a blues fan.

I've never seen either one of them in concert before which was my mistake. It was a great show. Taj Mahal and Bonnie Raitt were both spectacular.

  • BonTaj was beyond fabulous!!!!!!!

I've never seen a Bonnie concert I didn't like but last night was beyond all!!!!!! I love Taj Mahal and the two of them together was the greatest! I told my friend I wish they'd tour together forever! Bonnie was very emotional being in her brother's hometown. I think everyone wished they could give her a hug. But it sure didn't detract from the show. It added an element we don't often see with performers. I wish we could see her again tonite!

The Bon Taj Roulet performance at the Minnesota State Fair was incredibly good. Taj Mahal and his band were very good, and Bonnie Raitt was like a force of nature. Together they were wonderful.

Bonnie Raitt was powerful, emotional, rocked and can play a guitar with the best of them. Taj Mahal was fun, entertaining, and played the blues like no other. They played off each other like a fine wine paired with the perfect cheese. Go see these ultimate performers, you will be glad you did.

  • Bon Taj Roulet was fantastic

by PattiW on 8/28/09Minnesota State Fair Grandstand - St PaulRating: 4 out of 5

It's always great to listen to Bonnie Raitt & Taj Mahal - but together it was fabulous. Each performed separately which was awesome in itself but when they were together the chemistry allowed for a great performance. I appreicate Bonnie's ability to share her emotions with the audiance and you could tell that it was a challenging concert given the death of her brother. I enjoyed the concert, would love to see both of them together again.

  • A very moving concert

At 59, Bonnie Raitt's voice is still very strong and beautiful. She is also a wonderful musician. I loved the blues songs that she and Taj Mahal did together. And he new keyboard player is great. This concert was a very moving tribute to her brother.

by Daisifield on 8/28/09Minnesota State Fair Grandstand - St PaulRating: 5 out of 5

Taj Mahal and Bonnie Raitt rocked the Minnesota State Fair. Taj dug in his bag of songs and found a few from several genres and songwriters to entertain the crowd of 7500 at the first night of the fair. Bonnie came on and reminded us her brother Steve, who passed away last April was a Minnesota favorite. She sang her heart out and does not sing or play like a 59 year old woman! Excellent, emotional show. Great songs, great crowd pleaser. Ricky Peterson, a Minnesota Peterson, on keyboards was fantastic.

  • BonTaj Roulet was inspiring & heartfelt

by livingfragrance on 8/28/09Minnesota State Fair Grandstand - St PaulRating: 5 out of 5

The concert was full of energy, old and new songs, and meaningful for Bonnie Raitt's brother Steve who died in April and used to sing w/her. Taj was warm, friendly and was incredible w/his band and definitely better w/age. Bonnie Raitt's voice was very controlled and positively wonderful and refined w/age. Bonnie Raitt was truly inspiring when she talked about her brother and through tough times to remember our family and friends and live each day to the fullest. I liked when she talked about pain in our lives and she said "we sure can bend a lot but we're not broken". I loved it all. I only wished that the people that wanted to dance could've just gone in the empty spaces rather than stay at your seat. The security was tight but I thought a little too much.

  • Bontaj Roulet - Bonnie & Taj rock together

by pinkhibiscus on 8/28/09Minnesota State Fair Grandstand - St PaulRating: 3 out of 5

But separately the energy wasn't there. Taj was more doing jazz; Bonnie is sad over the loss of her brother ( of course). But worst was the sound. During Taj's set we were down on the plaza and the bass was so pounding it was hard to hear the music. We went up into the grandstand, but my friend, who has worked as a sound engineer, said they overamped Bonnie's voice. It seemed too loud to me, but he said it was the distortion. My ears hurt. Together for the last set, Bonnie & Taj really rocked. But I saw her three years ago with Keb Mo, and it was just way more fun. Glad I went this time but was disappointed, especially by the quality of the sound.

  • BonTaj Roulet: the best ever

by OldGuy100 on 8/28/09Minnesota State Fair Grandstand - St PaulRating: 5 out of 5

Two great stars at the top of their game. They gave full out emotional effort individually and together. Bonnie Raitt's tributes to her late brother were heartfelt and moving, but the evening also rocked.

As always Bonnie did an amazing job. I really like her laid back style with her audience. You could feel and see the emotion as she talked about her brother. I have seen her at the State Fair a couple of times and look forward to seeing her again!!

  • An amazing evening

by buckarue55 on 8/28/09Minnesota State Fair Grandstand - St PaulRating: 5 out of 5

The opening show for the Minnesota State Fair Grandstand set the bar high for the entertainment to come. This was the first time I have seen either performer live although I love both their musical styles. Taj Mahal shows his multitude of talent both vocally and ability to entertain no matter what instrument he plays. I would never have thought to bring in a banjo to a blues/jazz blues number but he pulled it off and this between his talented play on the harmonica and guitars. He was recieved well by all . Bonnie Raitt is always a great entertainer. She is by far one of the greats on the slide guitar. Her vocals were wonderful as always. Above all their numbers together were very enterrtaining.Their interaction together and with the crowd was playfully fun for all.

  • Bonnie Raitt & Taj Mahal - Amazing!

by Blueslvr on 8/28/09Minnesota State Fair Grandstand - St PaulRating: 5 out of 5

The concert was amazing! Bonnie started out with some blues and worked her way into some softer well known softer songs, as well as songs that make you want to get up and dance! Taj Mahal came in a little while after with his band, and the two bands joined to make a huge blues band that rocked!! Great entertainers as well as musicians. One of the best concerts I've seen, my girlfriend and I left feeling great about the performance and felt it was well worth our time and money!!

  • love her!!

  • Bonnie & Taj

by Kieker on 8/28/09Minnesota State Fair Grandstand - St PaulRating: 5 out of 5

When you go to a concert, you're going to see 'performers' or 'musicians'. We went to see/hear two of America's most prolific blues 'musicians': Bonnie Raitt and Taj Mahal. They are consumate professionals who feel what they play as much as they understand notes, chord progressions and time signatures. Bonnie Raitt offered up one of the most emotional, genuine, and heartfelt concerts I've ever seen in 35 years of 'concert-going'. She obviously is mourning the loss of her brother Steve (a Twin Cities music industry icon for 30 years) and put forth a musical effort that embraced a full range of emotion...from sadness, to joy and celebration. There is not another slide guitar player in the world who can play like Bonnie Raitt. Having grown up listening to Duane Allman, Lowell George, Sonny Landreth, Joe Walsh, and Bonnie, she has become the standard bearer for perfecting this challenging style; there is not another musician in the business who can hold a candle to the soul she exudes when playing. Bonnie's voice...ah-h-h-h, Bonnie's voice. There is no other like it. Christina Aguilara has been touted as having an incredible, soulful, 'blues' voice (if she ever so chose to move in that musical direction), but again, Bonnie's voice tops the list of female, blue-eyed, "bend the blue note" soul voices heard in America. The heart and power sung in every note is nearly overwhleming.
