About

Tootsie is a Tony Award-winning stage production of director Sydney Pollack’s beloved 1982 comedy film. Like Pollack’s film, the musical revolves around a struggling soap actor who adopts a new identity as a woman to land more roles, while serving as a love letter to Broadway. Tootsie features a Tony-winning book by Robert Horn and a score by 2018 Tony winner David Yazbek (The Band’s Visit). The musical premiered in September 2018 at the Cadillac Palace Theatre in Chicago before premiering on Broadway in April 2019. Tootsie is now touring across North America, with a regional premiere at the Ogunquit Playhouse in Ogunquit, Maine. The cast has included Drew Becker as Michael Dorsey and Dorothy Michaels, Ashley Alexandra as Julie Nichols, Payton Reilly as Sandy Lester, Lukas James Miller as Max Von Horn, Jared David Michael Grant as Jeff Slater, Kathy Halenda as Rita Marshall, Steve Brustien as Stan Fields and Adam du Plessis as Ron Carlisle.

    Disappointment

by Alindsay on 11/14/22Landmark Theatre - Syracuse

Just fell flat. Some funny lines. Expected it to be more closely aligned with the movie which hung together so well. Just felt fragmented and forced somehow. We left at intermission.

    Very funny show!

    by K. B. on 11/12/22Landmark Theatre - Syracuse

The show was very funny. However, the sound in the Landmark, especially in the balcony, continues to be terrible. It was nearly impossible to understand the vocals over the volume of the pit orchestra, and we were practically lipreading the dialogue between characters. This on top of the fact that the balcony seats are terrible (I'm tall and I can't sit straight without wedging my knees into the seat in front of me) made for a less than stellar evening out. None of this is the fault of the actors who were spot on and very good. However... my husband and I have decided that we will not attend any further events at the Landmark where we can only get balcony seating...

    by JChilders on 10/22/22

I didn't know what to expect from this show, and it proved to be a winner. The production was smooth, the actors were all talented, the orchestra was great, and the show was a lot of fun! The audience was in tears with laughter throughout the evening. I definitely recommend seeing this if you can!

It's nice to have theater back again. This is the first musical we have seen post Covid. It was fun and moved fast. A great take off the original movie.

    Good enough

Not great. Not terrible. It was good enough. If I could decide again if we would have gone and seen it I would say no.

    A little disappointing

by Louie B on 10/15/22DeVos Performance Hall - Grand Rapids

Orchestra was so loud that you couldn't hear the actors. Dialog was hard to hear and understand. Sets were great.

Great remake of a dated movie!

by Theater Cat on 10/15/22DeVos Performance Hall - Grand Rapids

So happy about the way the movie’s plot was updated to fix the obvious problems. The performers were winning and the jokes and songs were fun!

    Inappropriate for Youth

by TIM B on 9/29/22Rochester Auditorium Theatre - Rochester

We were surprised and dismayed with the use of the "F U" term in the dialog. Children who were brought to the theater to experience a stage show should not be exposed to that type of language. Yes they may hear it in other venues, but a cultural event should present a more wholesome dialog. Being senior citizens with diminished hearing, we found the orchestra often drowned out the vocalists. We were impressed at the many props and how they were smoothly moved between scenes.

    Inability Intervention

by A Grateful Godmother on 9/28/22Rochester Auditorium Theatre - Rochester

At the final performance of the play "Tootsie" on Sunday, 9/25/22 @ 6:30pm, Mr. Brian Bell, Front of House Manager, and several members of his staff (one, Sharon, I believe) was extremely accommodating to our family party of 6--in understanding our great concern in considering my personal inability to navigate the several stairs (no elevators) to our ticketed Balcony seats. Brian saw to alleviating all of our concerns by locating all 6 of us together in available, vacant Orchestra seats. He safely stowed my rollator walker and checked on us during the evening. His very pleasant personality and comforting favor went far and beyond the job. He and his staff showed me and my family complete theater "House-pitality" and added to making our night of anticipation and excitement in seeing "Tootsie" cast member--my very talented and beloved Godson, JARED DAVID MICHAEL GRANT, on stage--extremely pleasurable and rewardingly much more "up close and personal!" At the end of the play, realizing the importance of our special Theater experience that night, Brian went further in making sure that my family was comfortable and secure in waiting in the Lobby area to visit with Jared. My Blessings, Sincere Thanks, and Kudos to Manager, Mr. Brian Bell & his Front of House Staff, for making our Auditorium Theater experience very enjoyable. We definitely look forward to visiting again during RBTL's 2022-23 Show Season. Many Thanks, Brian, from a very blessed and Grateful Godmother!!

    Eh?

by Mamma on 9/28/22Rochester Auditorium Theatre - Rochester

It was OK for the price but I definitely will not go see it again. The first half we thought was very slow going. The ensemble dancing was off and we spent most of the time noticing all of the errors rather than enjoying the show. I give them all credit because I could never get up on stage and do what they do but again I don’t think we will go back and see it twice.
