I took my girls for the first time ever and it didn't disappoint! From the music to the staging, from the wardrobe design to the performance!

  • What Happened To Theatre Etiquette?

by Ballet Bunhead on 11/7/23Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - EdmontonRating: 2 out of 5

The classic ballet of The Sleeping Beauty, first performed in 1890, was presented on the Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium stage in 2023 by Alberta Ballet beautifully. It was the lack of theatre etiquette that spoiled the experience for me and my husband. Specifically, audience members arriving late that were permitted to enter the auditorium and take their seats thereby inconveniencing the patrons who were already seated and who were taking in the in-progress performance. The Jubilee Auditorium Know Before You Go page on their website states: “Latecomers will be seated during a suitable break in the performance at the discretion of the promoter”. I understand extenuating circumstances may cause patrons to arrive late, however perhaps they could be accommodated by waiting at the back, for example, until there is a suitable break to take their seats. This way, seated patrons are not disturbed by the need to stand while latecomers trepidly make their way in the dark to their seat while also interfering with the sight lines of those patrons seated behind and generally distracting others nearby thus interrupting the overall atmosphere. I attend a ballet such as The Sleeping Beauty to be drawn into the story and fantasy, to escape life’s hustle and bustle, to be immersed in visual and auditory senses. Poor theatre etiquette, in part, diminished my experience.

  • Amazing!

by Ally on 10/30/23Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - CalgaryRating: 5 out of 5

Such an incredible show, from the backgrounds to the costumes to the dancers themselves. Highly recommend and cannot wait to come back for the nutcracker.

  • It was great but. . . .

by Nana on 9/25/23Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - EdmontonRating: 5 out of 5

It was a wonderful ballet but thought it would be on point! In future could they get companies with pointe shoes? And the Winnipeg ballet and more cuban dancers ballet? Without tutus?

  • Excellent

by Nana on 9/25/23Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - EdmontonRating: 5 out of 5

It was a wonderful event. I really loved the talk with the 2 Artistic Directors before the event. Can we please see more Cuban dancers? Can you get Osiel Gouno?

  • Spectacular

by Gina on 9/18/23Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - CalgaryRating: 5 out of 5

It was truly spectacular performance. I love the story of Evita so it had special effects on me. It was very powerful and you totally could follow the story telling to watch the dancers. Recommend to everyone. Thank you for bringing this incredible performance to Calgary.

  • Colorful but hard to follow

by fanofchristmas on 12/11/14National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - OttawaRating: 2 out of 5

Did not follow the traditional story line and some scenes did not make sense.

  • The Nutcraker / Casse-noisette was amazing

by babysmiles2012 on 12/10/14National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - OttawaRating: 5 out of 5

What a fantastic Christmas tradition for the whole family. I took my 2 year old and she loved it. It was the first time I was seeing it live and I was mesmorized. The dancer were wonderful, brilliant and danced beautifully. The orchestra was fantastic, I can't wait until next year.

  • Not for children.

by Stroemer on 12/7/14National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - OttawaRating: 3 out of 5

The performance was good, The professional dancers were good, but I doubt if any child got the sense of the story. Unless this was clearly explained to the child, there was no way a kid, like ours,of 9 and 11, could guess that the whole play was made of parts of a dream of a young girl. Almost nothing related that play to the chrismass spirit. Our two grand-children did not seem to recognise the Dance of the flowers by any other sign than the music itself. It felt strang to see the crowd applaud after each short performance by the dancers.

  • Nutcracker Impresses Once Again

by MaudeOne on 12/6/14National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - OttawaRating: 5 out of 5

Another wonderful rendition of a holiday favourite. I always know it's Christmas time when The Nutcracker makes it's return engagement at the NAC. This is our 8th year enjoying this classic ballet and a tradition with three generations .

  • The Nutcracker

by Zastwania on 1/2/12Queen Elizabeth Theatre - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

Beautifully performed. Beautiful music. I so look forward to the performance each year. For me, to be at a Nutracker performance on December 31st is the best way to end the old year! Thank you!

The costumes, set design, dancing and entire production was fantastic. The orchestra sounded great and really added to my enjoyment.

  • Alberta Ballet the Nutcracker

by Anonymous on 1/1/12Queen Elizabeth Theatre - VancouverRating: 4 out of 5

That was a great experience! The costumes were beautiful, the stage was breathtaking. I appreciated the effort to make it look like it happened in Russia, the games the children played, the outfits worn, etc. I've seen the Nutcracker many times and I always preferred the second act, as this is when the most dancing occurs. To me the first act is more mime theater than ballet, but in this Alberta Ballet production it was the reverse, the first act was enchanting and playful, the children laughed watching, it was very entertaining! The second act I liked less, because I thought the dancers' skills were average.

  • The Nutcracker

by ddleo on 1/1/12Queen Elizabeth Theatre - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

Loved it, my only complaint is next time I go I'm going to get seats more towards the centre as my date and myself were sitting on the left side and had the stage partially cut off. The dancing was spectacular and the playing of the Vancouver Symphony was flawless. I will see this again.

pros - Very good ballet performance, amazing orchestra symphony, excellent stage setup cons - storyline too subtle at times

  • by Dancer51 on 10/17/11Queen Elizabeth Theatre - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

Extraordinary ballet! Dancers were fantastic; sets were very effective - overall, just fantastic!

  • Love Lies Bleeding

by gordyvr on 10/17/11Queen Elizabeth Theatre - VancouverRating: 2 out of 5

The play was very dark, much of Elton John's work is inspirational and fun. There is alot more to his life than being gay and drugs.

  • Love Lies Bleeding was so creative

by mjarcy on 10/16/11Queen Elizabeth Theatre - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

It was out of this world! It just kept getting better and better with each number. The principal dancer was incredible! Thank you for bringing this event here.

  • Nutcracker was amazing.

by hinesville on 12/7/10National Arts Centre - OttawaRating: 5 out of 5

I thought this was the best presentation especially for children in the audience. The story was easy to follow and the dancing was great.
