Definately appeals to a small demographic, Jone Mitchell and modern dance fans. If you were either or hopefully both it was a wonderful experience. But not for every one. Nice that there is a venue that can accomodate such performances. Would never happen at the Staple Center.

Alberta Ballet does Joni Mitchell

Joni Mitchell inspires the dance!
by samantabhadra on 2/28/10Royce Hall - UCLA Live - Los AngelesRating: 4 out of 5The sound system had difficulties during the first three songs--the bass was too loud and you couldn't hear Joni's voice. Since the lyrics were the cornerstone of the pieces, it was disturbing not to be able to hear them. Then the sound crew somehow corrected the balance, but even still, the words were hard to hear. Costumes, dancers, choreography were modern and minimal. The dances were mostly geared for large groups, suggesting community. Nothing controversial here. War is bad. Joni's recent paintings and video were projected onto the set in a circle as if it were the sun or the moon. Indeed, the last set before intermission it was the moon. Lighting was interesting. Men had green lines painted in the "cuts" of their muscles. During some of the dances both men and women wore flowing filmy pale colored shirt-like or skirt-like garments. The women had excellent extensions, the men lifted well. Legs and arms were parallel to each other most of the time, which showed sensitivity and alertness to each other. This may have been the most pleasing aspect of the entire show. Of course seeing Joni's acute observations about our modern culture put to the dance was priceless.
Inquisitive
by Qnlzbth on 2/28/10Royce Hall - UCLA Live - Los AngelesRating: 4 out of 5This was my first time attending an Alberta Ballet performance and I absolute loved it. As a whole, it was visually and artistically dynamic, causing me to have many thoughts and questions. Plus, I LOVE Joni Mitchell and her collaboration with the company was a match made in heaven.
Joni Mitchell's music ruined the ALBERTA BALLET
by Roxskin on 2/28/10Royce Hall - UCLA Live - Los AngelesRating: 2 out of 5Exuberant, well trained dancers performing to the cynical, politicized narrative songs of Joni Mitchell is not our idea of a great night out. The choreography was very good but constrained by the musical accompaniment and occasonally dipped into cliche and what I call "Choreography 101", something a high school modern dance choreographer would choose to interpret a piece. Costumes were simple but worked. After intermission, the house cleared out and only about 2/3 the audience remained, the rest whispering about the awful music. This is a shame, because the ballet company is excellent. The few times Ms. Mitchell allowed them to use a song with any true rhythm, they were able to display their creativity and full range. I would see this dance troupe again sans any association with Joni Mitchell, who, BTW, is one of my favorite singers, a la her album BLUE but not, apparently, FIDDLE AND THE DRUM.
