TOKYO POLICE CLUB IN CONCERT:

Upbeat Canadian indie quartet Tokyo Police Club has been getting wallflowers dancing with their post-punk-inspired sound and high-spirited live performances for the past decade. The group’s concerts are a nonstop barrage of catchy melodies, and sing-along-worthy choruses, and their outsize charm and infectious energy fill the room every time they take the stage. Earworms like “Hot Tonight” and “Your English Is Good” always elicit massive cheers from the crowd, and the band responds in kind with unbridled enthusiasm as they tear through their set. Whether they’re performing songs from their 2008 debut album Elephant Shell or 2014’s Forcefield, Tokyo Police Club always rock the stage with their impressive musicianship, lively stage presence, and extensive catalog of powerful indie rock jams.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Tokyo Police Club was formed in Toronto in 2005 from the ashes of the band Suburbia. They began playing small shows in the area, and before long word-of-mouth buzz had earned them an opening slot at the Pop Montreal Festival. A stellar performance there led to a deal with Paper Bag Records, and in 2006 the band made their debut on the label with the EP A Lesson in Crime. They followed up in 2007 with the Smith EP, and in 2008 they released their full-length debut album Elephant Shell. The record was a Top 10 hit in Canada, and also charted in the US which led to an extensive North American tour. Their 2010 sophomore album Champ was also well received, earning them three Top 20 singles on the Canadian Alternative Chart and a high-profile performance on the Late Show with David Letterman. In 2014 the band released their third album Forcefield to another round of critical and commercial success, and they continue to impress with their adrenaline-filled sets on tour.

Great show. I liked the venue, and we had a good view from the mezzanine.

    Uninspired

by Anonymous on 5/20/14The Sinclair - Cambridge

5-stars for Geographer; That said, the singer of TPC looked like he wanted to be anywhere but there, which only made it more irritating that the high school student in front were losing their minds like 14-year old Beliebers. Weird show, lacking in enthusiasm, and very few old songs

The band was great. The audience sang along the whole show. Everyone was really into it. Forcefield is a great new album.

Great but live sound was awful!

by EY50495 on 5/18/14Webster Hall - New York

Of course the bands were awesome but the live sound was bad. Whoever was behind the controls slaughtered us with the sub from the kick. Every single time they hit the kick ever cell in my body vibrated violently !!! We don't need that much bass from the kick. We couldn't even hear anything else! Unacceptable.

Potentially awesome show made OK by bad sound.

by matrox on 4/26/11Showbox at the Market - Seattle

The boys were on it. Unfortunately my friend and I spent a lot of the time wondering where the high-end was... It was like the cymbol mikes were turned off. And you couldn't feel the kick drum either. I know I sound like a snob, but it was very noticeable.

"When You're Standing Near--Tokyo Police Club!!!"

by Kitsune on 4/25/11Showbox at the Market - Seattle

So... how can I review this concert without saying "OMG IT WAS AMAZING!!!"? Because literally, that's all I can think of saying! Tokyo Police Club perform very well live, and just have an extraordinary stage presence. Their set list was pretty stellar too. Their opener (Beast Make Bomb) was surprisingly good as well; and their "Zombie Song" was really really catchy. Overall, the concert was everything I expected-- and more! I'd DEFINITELY see them again, and I'd also recommend their concerts to anyone who's a fan of them. You're really missing out on something spectacular if you don't.

This show made me a fan

    by dab10210 on 3/27/11Warehouse Live - Houston

Too be honest, I only went to this show because my friend won tickets through our university's radio station. I started listening to their new album 3 days before the concert, so I would be somewhat familiar with their songs. That being said, seeing them live made me an instant fan. Tokyo Polic Club are ridiculously good live. The energy they have is incredible and they got the crowd pumped and kept them excited with seemingly no effort. Since the show, I haven't gone a week without listening to their music. If you get a chance to see them, GO!

Despite some flaws in the sound quality, TPC never fails to play a good show. This was the second time that I've seen them and they only got better. You can tell that the band enjoys playing their music and that enthusiasm radiates off onto the audience. The energy level from the crowd was amazing just as it was when I first saw them and I think that is mostly because the Tokyo Police Club makes sure that they perform like it's their last.

    Love Me Some TPC

by Tremontikova on 2/26/11The Blue Note - Columbia

Thanks to everyone for a great evening. Of course, I went to the show to see Tokyo Police Club and watch Garrett enjoy himself up there on stage. However, Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin was nothing short of an amazing opening. I am always impressed with bands who switch up lead singers and instruments. As far as The Blue Note, the place was clean. The people were hospitable, and the bartenders kept the drinks coming...even when I had to switch to water. :)
