BABYMETAL on Tour

They call it "kawaii" metal ("cute" metal in Japanese) and the concept is so ludicrous it could only have come from the bizarre, wonderful subculture factory that is Japan. BABYMETAL features two (formerly three) diminutive teen girls singing pop songs — in front of a band of middle-aged heavy metal musicians. It shouldn't work, but it really, really does. Singers Su-metal, Moametal and, originally, Yuimetal are so small that they sometimes stand on boxes onstage, dressed in matching dresses that are part baby-doll, part medieval fantasy. It is a surreal and amazing sight — but for all the novelty, these ladies are surprisingly commanding. Their music is a study in delightful contrasts, melding girlish pop with guitar heroics and satisfyingly heavy rock. The group took the world by storm on their first BABYMETAL World Tour in 2014, and they were impressive enough to be invited to open for Lady Gaga during her 2014 ArtRave: The Artpop Ball tour. After their BABYMETAL World Tour 2016: Legend Metal Resistance, they were invited to support none other than Metallica the next year. In 2019, they undertook their first-ever U.S. headlining tour, supported by Swedish metal act Avatar.

BABYMETAL in Concert

Before joining the pre-fab band, BABYMETAL's singers had no idea what heavy metal even was. One singer, Yuimetal, admits she's never been in a mosh pit, and thinks she'd be "smashed to bits." Instead, singers Su-metal, Yuimetal and Moametal were all part of Sakura Gakuin, a group of junior high school girls chasing fame in Japan's lucrative "idol pop" industry. That industry is all about cultivating an image of innocence, but it can be hard to stand out; producer Kobametal originally imagined BABYMETAL as a subgroup of Sakura Gakuin that would distinguish the main group. But BABYMETAL quickly took on a life of their own, and in early 2014 the group released their first self-titled album to acclaim, climbing metal charts around the world thanks in no small part to the breakout single "Gimme Chocolate!" In 2016, the band released their second album, Metal Resistance and became the first Japanese group to headline Wembley Arena. Metalheads have embraced the group, who have been welcomed at major metal festivals. They even performed "Gimme Chocolate!" on the The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Yuimetal left the group in late 2018, but that hasn't slowed the band's momentum.

    Once in a Lifetime Experience.

    by Vincent S. on 4/29/24

I was able to attend multiple BABYMETAL shows here in the US—the most recent being April 25th at the SF Masonic Auditorium. The previous night BABYMETAL was the closer, but in Night 2 they were the middle band. Night 1 I got at 6:15 and the merch line was so long. It was around the corner and up the flight of stairs to the balcony level. Thankfully I showed up much earlier the next night and could get in and out of the merch line in maybe 5 minutes. Since I had a floor ticket for Night 2, there were only people at the barriers. I was able to get so close to the stage. Maybe only 3rd row of people. This was the best decision of my life. Both nights when BABYMETAL came out I was almost in tears. I couldn't believe how close I was. Being able to watch and see them dance and sing so close was something I will never be able to forget. The best thing about being in the pit was being able to sing and dance along with them and interact with them during their performance. I can not recommend BABYMETAL enough. I wish one day I could meet them and thank them for all the joy they've given me. I can't wait to go back to another concert. But as the saying goes, ONLY THE FOX GOD KNOWS. SEE YOU.

    Incredible as always

by Lilly on 4/27/24The Masonic - San Francisco

I’ve seen babymetal twice and it has been insane both times. Both were for the babyklok tour (aftershock and then the sf Masonic 4.24 date). I was absolutely blown away both times. If you’re thinking of seeing babymetal live, do it!

    Babymetal deserved more time!

by Ck on 4/27/24The Masonic - San Francisco

Babymetal was amazing! But they only played for 45 mins of what should've been more than an hour set while Deathklok played for more than an hour and I didn't love them. Wish I could've gotten more Babymetal!

    Not enough DragonForce!

by The Mom on 4/27/24The Masonic - San Francisco

We were there for DragonForce. They were only able to play four songs. The next band played forever, and each song sounded the same. We left out of boredom and never set eyes on Baby Metal. We never received the promised email with information about our Meet & Greet so almost missed it entirely. Really poor job, guys. Really poor.

    BABYMETAL

by Sam on 4/27/24The Masonic - San Francisco

The experience was amazing! Everything about it was a new experience from going to California to flighting out west. Towards the end of the concert I was exhausted from being up early in the morning est time but was soon as they came out I was wake and ecstatic. I’ve been a fan of BABYMETAL since I was young but wasn’t able to seen them until now. The performance from them was amazing and was electric from start to finish. While I can’t do this all the time I would definitely do it again
