BABYMETAL on Tour

They call it "kawaii" metal ("cute" metal in Japanese) and the concept is so ludicrous it could only have come from the bizarre, wonderful subculture factory that is Japan. BABYMETAL features two (formerly three) diminutive teen girls singing pop songs — in front of a band of middle-aged heavy metal musicians. It shouldn't work, but it really, really does. Singers Su-metal, Moametal and, originally, Yuimetal are so small that they sometimes stand on boxes onstage, dressed in matching dresses that are part baby-doll, part medieval fantasy. It is a surreal and amazing sight — but for all the novelty, these ladies are surprisingly commanding. Their music is a study in delightful contrasts, melding girlish pop with guitar heroics and satisfyingly heavy rock. The group took the world by storm on their first BABYMETAL World Tour in 2014, and they were impressive enough to be invited to open for Lady Gaga during her 2014 ArtRave: The Artpop Ball tour. After their BABYMETAL World Tour 2016: Legend Metal Resistance, they were invited to support none other than Metallica the next year. In 2019, they undertook their first-ever U.S. headlining tour, supported by Swedish metal act Avatar.

BABYMETAL in Concert

Before joining the pre-fab band, BABYMETAL's singers had no idea what heavy metal even was. One singer, Yuimetal, admits she's never been in a mosh pit, and thinks she'd be "smashed to bits." Instead, singers Su-metal, Yuimetal and Moametal were all part of Sakura Gakuin, a group of junior high school girls chasing fame in Japan's lucrative "idol pop" industry. That industry is all about cultivating an image of innocence, but it can be hard to stand out; producer Kobametal originally imagined BABYMETAL as a subgroup of Sakura Gakuin that would distinguish the main group. But BABYMETAL quickly took on a life of their own, and in early 2014 the group released their first self-titled album to acclaim, climbing metal charts around the world thanks in no small part to the breakout single "Gimme Chocolate!" In 2016, the band released their second album, Metal Resistance and became the first Japanese group to headline Wembley Arena. Metalheads have embraced the group, who have been welcomed at major metal festivals. They even performed "Gimme Chocolate!" on the The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Yuimetal left the group in late 2018, but that hasn't slowed the band's momentum.

    Best concert I've ever seen.

by Andman1 on 10/17/23Pearl Concert Theater at Palms Casino Resort - Las Vegas

I've never listened to Jason Richardson before. But I thought he was very good. Dethklok was just playing brutal. I thought the animations behind the band during the show were awesome. Babymetal was phenomenal. I would definitely go see baby metal again. My only complaint was the show was too short. Other than that, it was great.

    First BABYMETAL concert

by Daniel on 10/17/23YouTube Theater - Inglewood

One of the best concerts I've ever been to if not the best, and I've been to multiple "big name"concerts. The performance was great and the girls really got the crowd involved. The theater was full of energy. I will definitely try to make my way to another one of their concerts in the future and invite more people along next time.

    The fans ruined the show

by Annoyed Spectator on 10/16/23YouTube Theater - Inglewood

Babymetal themselves were awesome. Great energy, awesome choreography, the drummer was the star of the show for me. However the fans were ****ing unbearable. I came to see Dethklok so it wasn't the end of the world for me but I straight up could not enjoy myself. There were girls behind me SCREAMING their heads off. Like not cheers or anything, literal shrieking. I imagine if I was yelling that loud my throat would hurt. It wasn't fun and playful singing along to the songs. You would think they were being murdered with how loud their grotesque cries were. Let me tell you this concert was loud. I was wearing earplugs. And yet still, I could barely make out what the band was singing due to the fans. One of the most unenjoyable concert experiences of my life. Solely due to the fans.

    Babymetal Review

by kcfox on 10/16/23YouTube Theater - Inglewood

Show was great but it really sucked that they did not use the secondary monitors. For those in the 300 section it was like watching a concert but not being there. Only 2 times did they show the band on the back screen, felt very unpersonal and detached. Sonically it was perfect, but I felt like the seats were too far away. :(

    A Great Show!

by IB Fangirl on 10/15/23YouTube Theater - Inglewood

This was the first time I had been to the YouTube Theater. It was a great venue. We had good seats and enjoyed the evening. Dethklok opened. It was great to see them again. The animation in the background really sells the experience. Babymetal had a cool intro and kept with that theme throughout their performance. They were more pop in this concert than when I had seen them several years ago with Korn. They are true performers though. They engaged the audience and really got everyone on their feet. It was a fun time and a great show!

    Another Great Performance

by DDM on 10/15/23YouTube Theater - Inglewood

It's been 9 years since I've been to a BABYMETAL concert and these Su-Metal and Moa-Metal did that same energy they did when they first came to LA. As for their newest member, Momo-Metal, it was like she's been with the group since the beginning. It was a fantastic show. It was also great seeing Jason Richardson and Dethklok open for them too. I can't wait for BABYMETAL to make their return.

    amazing show

by vins on 10/15/23YouTube Theater - Inglewood

The show was great. The venue is new, clean, and has good acoustics. The air conditioning inside the venue was very effective and it was quite cold. Is it good for live performances that get heated up?
