Vancouver Whitecaps FC History

The Vancouver Whitecaps may have only joined MLS in 2011 (alongside the Portland Timbers), but the team has a long history in the Pacific Northwest. The Whitecaps first launched in 1974  as a member of the now-defunct North American Soccer League and moved to the Canadian Soccer League in 1986 as the 86ers. The team would remain as the 86ers until 2000 when the Whitecaps name resurfaced as part of the A-League, which would later become the United Soccer League (USL).

Finally, on March 18, 2009, the Whitecaps were introduced as the newest franchise in MLS, where they would keep the Whitecaps name as part of the United States' top division. The club qualified for their first playoff run in 2012, becoming the first Canadian MLS franchise to do so. Meanwhile, the Whitecaps have claimed the Voyageurs Cup at the annual interleague Canadian Championship in 2015, 2022, and 2013 and count 2013 MLS Golden Boot winner Camilo Sanvezzo among their alumni.

    Expensive victory

by Aldergrove fan on 6/25/22BC Place - Vancouver

First....while it's great we won, it seems like the Caps play down to the level of their opponent. This could have been a 3-0 game. If the Caps win the next game 2-1, does that mean their MLS opponent is on the same level as York? Second....my ticket was $15 and considering where the seat was, perhaps worth the $15. But a near $20 beer? Really? I was at a nearby restaurant and had the same beer for under $10.

    Great day out

by Alan on 3/7/22BC Place - Vancouver

Great seats. Bar, food and toilets easy accessible. Experience was fun even though it was a 0-0 draw. The home fans make this experience.

    Vancouver Whitecaps Blue vs White

by Scott W on 2/22/22BC Place - Vancouver

What a great event - granted I am a bit biased as my son played on the White team. Hopefully he will be playing for the Whitecaps FC first team in the near future so we can attend more games to cheer on the team.

Vancouver Whitecaps FC vs. Seattle Sounders FC

by Shelley S on 11/10/21BC Place - Vancouver

What a game! The energy in the building was incredible - it was nice to be part of an audience like this after 2 years of a pandemic. So thankful for the vaccine card for entry as it allows us to get out and cheer our Whitecaps on in person! The celebration after the game was electric - enoyed every minute! GO WHITECAPS!!

    White caps game

by Cjj on 10/5/21BC Place - Vancouver

It was a great experience for the kids and they loved it. Food and drink too expensive but overall the kids loved it and the caps won 3-0.

Venue awesome, getting in but if a pain

by Lester on 10/4/21BC Place - Vancouver

Not very clear before you walk up about purses amd bags. Several people including us got sent to a farther gate to check in my girls purse. Earlier posted large clear sun age would be ideal.

    Expensive parking

by christian on 9/30/21BC Place - Vancouver

I wish parking was bundled with tickets. It is almost the price of the ticket.

    We won!

by White Caps Fan on 9/29/21BC Place - Vancouver

It was a great evening of football. Vancouver Whitecaps are definitely playing better football now and it’s worth going to see them. It’s safe and easy to get in with proof of vax. I enjoyed it.

    Weak Covid precautions

by JC on 9/28/21BC Place - Vancouver

When booking our tickets and trying to be Covid-safe during this 4th wave, I was happy with 50% reduced capacity and masks being worn except when eating and drinking. Neither of these claims were true, at least in our seating area. It was packed with people and there was little mask compliance. Please do better Whitecaps to keep your fans safe.

    Great Atmosphere

by Jenobi on 8/24/21BC Place - Vancouver

First game back from Covid break (329 days!) and it felt safe. I love the new mandate for a covid inoculation passport. I would feel much more at ease. I didn't see any obvious sanitizing stations like the last time I was there a year and a half ago.

Had a great experience, very convenient. Saves time.

by Natetron on 8/24/21BC Place - Vancouver

East, simple to use, and saves time when you have other line ups that you have to stand in. Brought a good friend for his birthday, it was his first game ever. A great win in a great atmosphere made his experience that much better, will definitely use this system again.

    Good venue and fans

by David on 5/18/19BC Place - Vancouver

I would definitely return. Not overly excited fan base (was rooting for Atlanta anyway). Good venue with cool pregame set up outside and great food vendors inside. Friendly staff all the way around. Will be back when Atlanta United plays again. Thanks Vancouver!!!

    Great facility...not a great game.

by Simon on 4/3/19BC Place - Vancouver

BC stadium is a great facility. Staff were very helpful to a 1st time visitor. Sadly, the game wasn't stellar. :-)

A great Night of Football (soccer)

by emmdix on 9/4/18BC Place - Vancouver

This stadium is well built for soccer. It would be nicer if the stands were closer to the fields, but what they have done to retrofit is has been good. a great crowd on a beautiful summer night. Only thing stopping it from getting 5 stars is the distance from the field and not playing on natural grass.
