Vancouver Whitecaps FC History

The Vancouver Whitecaps may have only joined MLS in 2011 (alongside the Portland Timbers), but the team has a long history in the Pacific Northwest. The Whitecaps first launched in 1974  as a member of the now-defunct North American Soccer League and moved to the Canadian Soccer League in 1986 as the 86ers. The team would remain as the 86ers until 2000 when the Whitecaps name resurfaced as part of the A-League, which would later become the United Soccer League (USL).

Finally, on March 18, 2009, the Whitecaps were introduced as the newest franchise in MLS, where they would keep the Whitecaps name as part of the United States' top division. The club qualified for their first playoff run in 2012, becoming the first Canadian MLS franchise to do so. Meanwhile, the Whitecaps have claimed the Voyageurs Cup at the annual interleague Canadian Championship in 2015, 2022, and 2013 and count 2013 MLS Golden Boot winner Camilo Sanvezzo among their alumni.

Great night at Swangard with the Whitecaps

by Anonymous on 7/15/10Swangard Stadium - Burnaby

Had a great time at the Whitecaps game. Sat in the family section and bought family packs which included food (a $10 value per person). Seats were a little uncomfortable but the game, which the Caps won, was exciting and great fun for kids and adults alike. The stadium has beautiful views of the mountains so even if the game isn't great, the vistas are stunning. All around great evening.

The Whitecaps put on a good game day presentation. Good fans, nice stadium, the mascot is a crazy bird! Can't wait for their jump to MLS!

Whitecaps Played Great - what I saw of it!

by FansNeedtoSee on 8/17/09Swangard Stadium - Burnaby

The Vancouver Whitecaps gave a great performance on Saturday night. They played well both offensively and defensively. They put on a great show, with lots of fun stuff that makes the event very family friendly. Included in the event is a special section for the kids to do various activities before the game and during the intermission, the volunteers are amazing and the activities are well organized. However, I was extremely unhappy with the new team covered seats which made our view of the game from the 3rd row very limited. It is apparent that they made some attempt to keep the players warm and dry, however the new covered seating greatly impedes the view of the game regardless that they are clear to view through. It is one of those "great ideas, poorly implemented" initiatives. Not really sure what you can do with the grandstands the way they are, however, selling tickets in those seats for the price you pay, you are not getting a clear view of the game. I gave this event 3 stars because of the limited ability to watch the game, however, if not for the new covered team seating this event would have managed a 5 star rating from me. Next time we will sit higher - we will miss the mascot, but will enjoy the game!

    Whitecaps Soccer affordable entertainment

by thepuckcollector on 7/15/09Swangard Stadium - Burnaby

Going to see my first match at Swangard Stadium in Vancouver was an enjoyable experience. The crowd was well behaved and into the match. Soccer fans in Vancouver are quite knowledgeable and have a feel for the game. It was something that I didn't expect. I highly recommend a trip to Swangard to see the White Caps in action.
