Atlanta United FC History

Atlanta United has gone from being one of the newest teams in Major League Soccer to its most supported. Since it joined the league in 2017, the club has led MLS in attendance each year and owns over half of the Top 10 most attended matches in MLS history. Awarded a franchise on April 16, 2014, Atlanta United is owned by Arthur M. Blank and led by club President Darren Eales. The club's opening season in 2017 coincided with the opening of Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Originally managed by Gerardo "Tata" Martino, who led the national teams of Paraguay and Argentina, as well as FC Barcelona, before joining Atlanta in 2016, Atlanta United made the postseason in each of its first two seasons and won the 2018 MLS Cup. After winning the title, Martino took the Mexico National Team job, but left MLS with the highest winning percentage (.647) by a head coach in league history. The club then hired Frank de Boer, who led the club to two trophies: the 2019 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup and the 2019 Campeones Cup, the latter of which Atlanta United became the first MLS club to win after it defeated Mexico's Club América.

In August 2021, Atlanta United announced Gonzalo Pineda as its new head coach. Pineda came from Seattle Sounders FC where he was a member of the coaching staff for five seasons. Under Pineda, Atlanta has qualified for the playoffs twice, in 2021 and 2023.

Mercedes-Benz Stadium has retractable seating in order to accommodate an MLS pitch as well as a retractable roof. The ATL Experience

by Pongo on 3/22/24Mercedes-Benz Stadium - Atlanta

Fantastic experience from start to finish, the Mercedes Benz stadium is an amazing place and the entertainment before and after the game was second to none, you could take food and drink into the ground visit several team store shops and see Mercedes cars, it was just a stones throw from the Marta stations and Atlanta’s Olympic park

    ATL 5 stars

by Bob on 3/12/24Mercedes-Benz Stadium - Atlanta

Atlanta United always is an exciting time. Being part of the season opener was terrific. The facility is always ready for the crowd. Entry was the best. Facility clean and well staffed with customer focused employees. Food options are great and service excellent. Cannot say enough about the great experience and have already booked for the USA women’s national team verses Japan.

    Gotta fix this!

    by Paul Conn on 11/22/23

ONLY ONE BIG PROBLEM! I've been to three games in the past year with my family, and the overall experience is terrific! Loved the atmosphere, the game itself, the setting. But one aspect is just way below the standard the team has set, and that's the terrible way of checking, and especially retrieving, purses and backpacks which were too large and not transparent. This is a low-grade, amateurish, mickey-mouse system! Twice I had women with our group who were there for the first time, so they didn't get the warning about not carrying purses. So they trudged over to that little truck and checked them. But when the game was over, the lines to retrieve checked items was hundreds of fans. We waited 30 mins, and when we got through, the lines were still very long behind us. Lots of muttering and justifiable complaining. What had been a wonderful experience for two hours can go totally sour if your party has to wait 45 mins for someone to retrieve a bag. Come on, guys, you're a first-rate professional operation! Please fix this problem before next season! Thanks.

Always a blast to cheer on the team

by Emmy B on 11/10/23Mercedes-Benz Stadium - Atlanta

We enjoyed the night at the Benz cheering for the Five Stripes. My favorite Atlanta family outing - lots of fun, easy to get to, not too expensive to feed everyone and great memories for all.

Ticket price mark up b/c of Messi.

by Ulises on 9/20/23Mercedes-Benz Stadium - Atlanta

The match it self was good. The ticket mark up is what upset me along with a lot of other people. Every one bought high priced tickets b/c Messi was supposed to be there, and I didn't have a problem buying the tickets. The fact that the soccer clubs were promoting Messi just for them not to deliver on their advertising is what I find wrong. There should be some kind of reimbursement. Not a full reimbursement but some kind of money back or money toward my next purchase. That's were I stand if you guys are promoting a certain thing, make sure you can deliver to your consumers.

    Not pleased.

by Chris R. on 9/20/23Mercedes-Benz Stadium - Atlanta

All the promotion around Messi playing in this game, led me to pay up for tickets that would’ve been like $30 for what I got, since he didn’t even travel. I understand players not playing, but to get no notice until the night before is stupid. Game was fine.

    Not worth it

by GeorgiaFan on 9/20/23Mercedes-Benz Stadium - Atlanta

Ticket prices were quadrupled, but Messi didn't show. The game was great, but it was not worth it due to the extra high prices. Very close to fraud, if you ask me.
