Tootsie is a Tony Award-winning stage production of director Sydney Pollack’s beloved 1982 comedy film. Like Pollack’s film, the musical revolves around a struggling soap actor who adopts a new identity as a woman to land more roles, while serving as a love letter to Broadway. Tootsie features a Tony-winning book by Robert Horn and a score by 2018 Tony winner David Yazbek (The Band’s Visit). The musical premiered in September 2018 at the Cadillac Palace Theatre in Chicago before premiering on Broadway in April 2019. Tootsie is now touring across North America, with a regional premiere at the Ogunquit Playhouse in Ogunquit, Maine. The cast has included Drew Becker as Michael Dorsey and Dorothy Michaels, Ashley Alexandra as Julie Nichols, Payton Reilly as Sandy Lester, Lukas James Miller as Max Von Horn, Jared David Michael Grant as Jeff Slater, Kathy Halenda as Rita Marshall, Steve Brustien as Stan Fields and Adam du Plessis as Ron Carlisle.
To connect with Tootsie:
I was disappointed in the performance. Parts were funny, but unfortunately we didn’t think it was as good as the movie.
It was fantastic and it felt so awesome to be at a live performance in almost 2 years. Better than the movie which we’ve seen at least 5 times!
The play was alright. I do wish it would have stayed more along the lines of the movie. I also wish it didn’t have so much profanity. Hearing this with my daughter was embarrassing.
This show exceeded my expectations. Clever and witty and with a very talented and diverse cast. I will remember it for a long time. The only drawback was the fact that the Saenger theatre did not enforce the mask mandate. Quite a few people pulled their masks down or took them off completely. The entire row behind me was unmasked (including the man with a cough seated directly behind me) and the usher was too busy on his phone to notice or care.
Attended “Tootsie” on Nov 14th. Ushers were so helpful in finding handicapped seating for my 86 year old mother who walks with a walker. Thank you for a memorable experience. We loved the show!!
I purchased tickets primarily for my wife. Little did I know how impressed I would be with the quality of the actors and producers.
Hardly any relation to the original movie. Unnecessary "F" bombs detracted from what could have been an enjoyable evening's entertainment. Intermingled with social issues into the dialogue was another detractor. On a positive note, the dancers were excellent. The choreography was outstanding. A bit tough to hear acoustics-wise. Nevermore said the raven.
The show was supposed to begin at 7:30 and they ask that you get there at least 1/2-1 hour before showtime. We were like bearded cattle in the waiting area and they did not open the doors until 7:35!! Masks were required but if they were really worried about Covid they would not have had kept people waiting so long in a crowded little area! The sow did not start on time. It was after 8 pm begire it started. The play was good but not the best I’ve seen. Masks were required the whole time which I thought was crazy!!
Easy entrance very efficient. Prefer paper tickets but phone was really easy. Exit is a little slow need someone at the bottom of the stairs to ask people to move away from the stairs on the first floor. Over all great theater, very comfortable seating very clean, polite and professional staff as always been a part of DPAC.
The first 2/3 of the show was great. The performances got weak in the last 3rd. There was also excessive F… language and finger motions
The show was unbelievably bad! The production and cast were not good. I go to see a lot of Broadway shows and this one is a swing and a miss! As for DPAC and the city of Durham's COVID precautions I suggest taking your money elsewhere. The masking of everyone, even though everyone had to be fully vaccinated to attend, made the experience disgusting! Most of the restaurants don't have enough workers and are not offering in person dinning. My advice is to avoid this city all together.
The basic premise of Tootsie is anachronistic. Nonetheless, great vocals, good costuming, and strong sets from the company. Excellent sound at DPAC as always.
Great to be back to live shows! The cast was terrific - Thank you!!!
Cast outstanding; comedy timing impeccable; never laughed as much....Great show. Worth driving more than 2 hours to be there. Great in all respects!
Partner and I had a fabulous date night at Tootsie. Hilarious and meaingful update to the original story. Cast was simply amazing!
Just non-stop laughing through out the entire play. The leading lady (the love interest) had an amazingly beautiful voice. I would love to watch it again.
A little obvious in its attempt to overemphasize the blatant sexism, but tried really hard.
Anazing show! Very nice dancingb and singing, such nice humor! Love it!!
The talent was obvious. The sets were good. The jokes were played well . Overall the musical was funny & delivered throughout the entire show.
Sheas made it Easy to get in and out quickly. Even needing to show a vaccination card wasn’t a problem.
