About

Tootsie is a Tony Award-winning stage production of director Sydney Pollack’s beloved 1982 comedy film. Like Pollack’s film, the musical revolves around a struggling soap actor who adopts a new identity as a woman to land more roles, while serving as a love letter to Broadway. Tootsie features a Tony-winning book by Robert Horn and a score by 2018 Tony winner David Yazbek (The Band’s Visit). The musical premiered in September 2018 at the Cadillac Palace Theatre in Chicago before premiering on Broadway in April 2019. Tootsie is now touring across North America, with a regional premiere at the Ogunquit Playhouse in Ogunquit, Maine. The cast has included Drew Becker as Michael Dorsey and Dorothy Michaels, Ashley Alexandra as Julie Nichols, Payton Reilly as Sandy Lester, Lukas James Miller as Max Von Horn, Jared David Michael Grant as Jeff Slater, Kathy Halenda as Rita Marshall, Steve Brustien as Stan Fields and Adam du Plessis as Ron Carlisle.

Theater Did Well, But Didn’t Love the Play

by Carol on 12/12/21The National Theatre - Washington

The theater handled the Covid crowd efficiently and safely and the patrons all wore their masks so we felt safe. We were also impressed and happy with the well placed, convenient safety railings on the steep balcony stairs. However, the play was disappointing and we left at the intermission as did a number of people. While the scenery was outstanding, many of the actors didn’t fit their parts which was distracting.. For instance Juliet was very stubby and over weight although she did have an excellent voice and each song went on far too long and became extremely boring.

    Broadway returns to DC!

by KirkinPA on 12/10/21The National Theatre - Washington

Opening night at the National for Tootsie. I believe it was the first of the "Broadway Returns to the National" performances. Health and Safety; top notch. Vac cards and IDs were checked before entry. Ushers carried reminder signs to "Mask up". Almost all the audience were conscientious about their masks. The show was fun; excellent cast and performances. One difference; Tootsie moved to the theater, rather than the television industry the original movie was in. A very good return to Broadway in DC.

    Funny Show

    by L. L. on 12/10/21The National Theatre - Washington

I wasn't sure what to think about it before going, but the cast did great job. Female lead, Ashley Alexandra has a strong beautiful voice and the bff gal, Payton did a great job spitting out all those words in her songs. Not the greatest from a music standpoint as many of words of the songs seemed akward, but very funny comedy. The male roommate bff was Hilarious and called out Dorothy/Michael and had fun laughing at them when things collided as predicted...as any truly good friend would. Male lead has Great legs! Well worth going to. #BroadwayattheNational

    Well Done Hippodrome

by Bink on 12/8/21Hippodrome at France-Merrick Performing Arts Center - Baltimore

Attended the touring production of Tootsie on Sunday, Dec 5, 2021. All workers were masked. We were informed that we must be vaccinated and masked. We arrived with proof of vaccination and our electronic tickets. Workers had a great system: Check id and vax card. Stamp our hand and put on an identifying paper bracelet. Electronic tickets and we were in with no wait. Tootsie was a load of fun. Updated to today’s times, the show was original, NOT just a copycat of the 1980s movie. The music was fun, and really helped tell the story. Actors were great. Dancers fabulous. We loved the sets, too. Funny, funny funny. Great diversion during the continuing Covid mess. Thanks for the laughs.

by Pete on 12/8/21Hippodrome at France-Merrick Performing Arts Center - Baltimore

Saw the touring troupe performing Tootsie at the Hippodrome. Used mobile electronic ticketing for the first time and it was remarkably easy. Performance was top notch with the lead, Drew, doing an amazing job!

Lovely show! New protocols mar the experience

by Old Fogie on 12/3/21Hippodrome at France-Merrick Performing Arts Center - Baltimore

Love Tootsie! I had seen parts of it at the Tony Awards and bought the cast recording to be prepared. The show was everything I wanted it to be - fun, upbeat, lively, great comedic moments. I loved the supporting characters - Sandy and Jeff. I have no idea how they did the rapid costume changes, some of them on stage. Loved it! It's the first show I've seen post-COVID and lots of things have changed. You have to wear a mask the entire time. Done - I've had to fly and wearing a mask on a plane is much harder. You have to go through a new VAX check line before you can get into the theater to present your ticket. I had plenty of time, so that was unexpected but not a problem. Last - because of COVID most of the local restaurants were closed. Only one was open and therefore filled with theater-goers. Hated waiting in line for tasteless food. Other than that, everything else (parking, etc) was par for the course. Glad to be back in the theater!

    Well done

by Deb on 12/3/21Hippodrome at France-Merrick Performing Arts Center - Baltimore

My family and I were entertained by this production. However we had previously seen Tootsie on Broadway which I would give 10 stars- all characters/actors were amazing and so engaging and executed their performance at 100%. I did think the dancers were amazing in this performance.

    Funny, Smart and very entertaining!

by Raymo on 12/1/21Music Hall Kansas City - Kansas City

We saw the Saturday matinee with Connor Allston filling in for the lead. He did an excellent job bouncing back between Michael and Dorothy. Couldn’t count all the costume changes! Loved his Dorothy mannerism plus his vocals and acting were very terrific. Michael’s object of desire, Ashley Alexandra as Julie, has a knock your socks off voice and does a great acting job as the confused co-worker/friend. Payton Reilly does incredible job as the always neurotic Sandy. You root for her and feel sorry at the same time. Bottom line, this is not the 1982 movie transcribed for the broadway stage…and that’s what makes it a must see for 2022. Lots of laughs, great songs and a very strong ensemble pushed Tootsie beyond my expectations. All four of us agreed.

by Raymo on 11/30/21Music Hall Kansas City - Kansas City

This is not the 1982 movie transcribed for the stage…which is one of the reasons this musical is so entertaining! We saw a matinee with Connor Allston as the lead. He did an awesome job bouncing back and forth as Michael and Dorothy with strong vocals and acting. His love interest, Ashley Alexandra, has a knock your socks off voice. Payton Reilly as Sandy, is perfect as the neurotic friend/lover. Creative set changes, catchy tunes, lots of laughs and a very strong ensemble pushed this musical beyond my expectations! Go see it!

    Music hall falling apart

by Worst visit yet on 11/30/21Music Hall Kansas City - Kansas City

Really sad so many shows continue to play here. The ceiling is literally falling out, and during winter it was blowing ice cold air. Sound quality is second rate. Why Kansas City, do you not use the Kauffman center? Will likely not see any more shows here unless it’s a huge event like wicked. Shame on kc for not even keeping the heat on. Sentiments were shared by every staff person we talked to on the way out.

    Live Theater is Back!

by Robbiehop on 11/24/21Hobby Center - Houston

A superbly crafted musical executed by a very talented cast. By the second act, the audience started to return the love from the seats. A reminder of the sheer joy of live theater.

    I’ve seen better

by Sbl on 11/24/21Hobby Center - Houston

Seemed like actors were less than 5 star. Difficult to understand some dialog & some lyrics. Didn’t find this production as engaging as other Broadway shows such as lion king, cats, rent, wicked, etc. I’d pass if I was given the opportunity to see it again.
