Tootsie is a Tony Award-winning stage production of director Sydney Pollack’s beloved 1982 comedy film. Like Pollack’s film, the musical revolves around a struggling soap actor who adopts a new identity as a woman to land more roles, while serving as a love letter to Broadway. Tootsie features a Tony-winning book by Robert Horn and a score by 2018 Tony winner David Yazbek (The Band’s Visit). The musical premiered in September 2018 at the Cadillac Palace Theatre in Chicago before premiering on Broadway in April 2019. Tootsie is now touring across North America, with a regional premiere at the Ogunquit Playhouse in Ogunquit, Maine. The cast has included Drew Becker as Michael Dorsey and Dorothy Michaels, Ashley Alexandra as Julie Nichols, Payton Reilly as Sandy Lester, Lukas James Miller as Max Von Horn, Jared David Michael Grant as Jeff Slater, Kathy Halenda as Rita Marshall, Steve Brustien as Stan Fields and Adam du Plessis as Ron Carlisle.
To connect with Tootsie:
It was ok....vulgar language and did not really follow what was in the movie and the music was not the same!
I am a big fan of the movie Tootsie with Dustin Hoffman, Bill Murray, Teri Garr and others. Looking for something to do in Milwaukee the night before a family commitment, I stumbled upon this show. I figured, why not? My expectations were low. I dragged my husband along for the ride. I have to say that we were both blown away by this show. I even want to go again if I can! Well done!
I thought it was just ok. What took away from the experience was the extremely annoying song the sandy character kept singing. I thought the Jeff character got the best lines, and I'm sorry to say, I was distracted by how obese 2 of the more prominent players were. If you're going to make something based on a funny movie, I'd better be good.
I saw the Broadway production twice...it was absolutely hillarious. This production appeared to go for wokeness as there was some language adjustments that were not needed and they completely missed the need for chemistry between the Michael and Julie characters. There were some standout performance such as the actor who played Michael Dorsey, actress who played Sandy and actor who played the young man that fell in love with the Tootsie character. I appreciate everyone giving it there all...I also realize I am comparing a non-equity run through the lens of having seen an amazing Broadway cast too. "Average" seems to fit.
My friend and I were excited to see Tootsie The Musical because Tootsie The Movie 1982 release was hysterically funny. Other than the character's names, the narrative changed from the original story, leaving behind the funny. In the movie, Michael Dorsey's character change (curlers in wigs, trying undergarments, learning to walk in heels) was extremely funny and perfectly transitioned to Dorothy. The musical ended one scene with Michael having an idea, and opened the next scene as Dorothy - That was a missed opportunity to showcase Michael's funny missteps. My friend and all the audience in our vicinity commented on "why and what is the Romeo & Juliet play.....makes no sense". In the movie Dorothy auditioned for a soap opera, and that story lent a large supporting cast of interaction with Dorothy. There was zero chemistry between Michael's and Julia's characters, and in many songs, Michael's voice was not strong enough to compete with the music, and was drowned out. What we did like: Set design was great. "Sandy" was great, and her voice projected well. We understand there are always creative changes in bringing a musical from a movie, however in this case, changing the narrative so drastically lost the heart and humor of the story.
The performances were fine. The music was unremarkable. The movie was a very tough act to follow.
I wanted to like this. Took my teens. It was a bad musical interpretation of the movie. The music and the story itself were just not that good. The actors were fine, but the audio made it difficult to understand them. The adaptation from the film took away a lot of what made it funny. We left at intermission - I've never done that, but none of us had any desire to stay.
The cast was brilliant. Singing so good. Funny and sad at times. We really really enjoyed it.
I've seen worse, but I've also seen MUCH better. I didn't find it painful to watch, but I was glad when it was over. But I knew going in it was a gamble. Musicals based on popular films most often are indeed a gamble.
Neither of us enjoyed the show. Our first time seeing Tootsie, and we both could not wait for intermission, so we could leave as politely as possible. The cast was okay. The set design was very cool.
Had no idea what to expect when I bought tickets to the show. I had never seen the movie but I kept seeing ads for this comical musical coming to Dallas and so I bought tickets for a girls night with my best friend. We had a blast, the show was hilarious, I laughed so hard I cried at least twice. The acting was wonderful, great chemistry throughout the whole cast, even up high where we were you could see the expressions on their face that would make the whole scene.
Got a full night in. Enjoyed the activities outside prior to the event. Music and a glass of wine. My son went with me and it was a chance to broaden his horizons. He was not familiar with Tootsie the movie so the content would have been more meaningful to him if I had put him closer to the stage...that way he could have read the faces and body language. He loved the facility and the formal nature of things. We had a father son blast. Thanks so much. I'll be back. Tinkertoys
Like always we love the venue. We see mini, mini mini musicals both here and in New York. Tootsie was very very average, if not worse.
This production has all the elements you need for a great Broadway night: clever music, great sets, fabulous dancing, and a fun plot line. We loved it. But... you might not want to take young children. There is a smattering of strong language (but which fits well in its context) and one "mature" scene (which in itself is funny and plot consistent). We had a great evening.
This was a spur of the moment purchase and it turned out to be one of the best shows that we have seen in years. The opening number of the 2nd act was hilarious! Now one of my favorite musical numbers ever! The music and performances were all memorable. This is just go see it kind of a show.
Very funny and entertaining and really enjoyed the characters! First Act could have benefitted from some editing but, despite that, we really enjoyed it!
Very funny show. Enjoyed it. Not child appropriate.
Great venue to watch the show. Tootsie set and cast was amazing. Many lol moments and the talent to pull it off was remarkable. Definitely would see again.
One of my favorites so far. It’s absolutely hilarious.
My party and I thoroughly loved this musical! It was funny and the actors were extremely talented. My only thought is we were not aware of the language used and there were several children in the audience.
