Don't buy a gift; give an experience. This year, The Washington Ballet celebrates 15 years of its very-DC version of The Nutcracker, through December 28 at the historic Warner Theatre in downtown Washington DC.
Set to Tchaikovsky's magical score, this celebrated production set in 1882 early Georgetown has become the signature Nutcracker in our nation's capital. The curtain rises and the audience is transported back in time to a Georgetown mansion, where party guests include Frederick Douglass, John Paul Jones, Harriet Tubman, Ben Franklin and Thomas Jefferson. The Washington Ballet's iconic version is equal parts history lesson, mischief and humor. With General Washington as the heroic Nutcracker and George III as the Rat King, the story comes to life with over 100 dancers, intricate, stunning set designs and original custom costumes. Audiences will be captivated by stunning duets by Anacostia Native Americans and a springtime on the banks of the Potomac. Waltzing cherry blossoms, dancing cardinals and dancing sugar plums plus other enchanting adaptations make this unique production at the majestic Warner Theatre a special treat that continues to captivate audiences of all ages.
The theater was breathtaking and the performance was beautiful! They brought in so many creative parts to make it DC’s own. I loved it all!
I have seen several renditions of the Nutcracker, and this was one of my favorites. My girlfriend did ballet throughout her entire childhood and loved this show as well. Great bits of humor and entertainment throughout. This was definitely a show I would see again.
The Nutcracker was beautiful and the dancers did an amazing job, I give all the performers a 5 star rating. The reason for the three stars is because of two things, first we were squished in the theater before and during the show….while they checked vaccination status and posted signs about being 6 feet apart they did not make that possible. There was no way to stand at any distance from anyone. Secondly the first 30 minutes of the show they continued to file people in nonstop obstructing the view of the ballet. It was continuous and extremely distracting, the tickets are very expensive and we missed the first part of the show by late arrivals. There was no waiting for a pause in the ballet they just kept having people get up and down and block the views of those trying to watch who were their on time.
Loved this rendition of The Nutcracker. I haven't seen a ballet in years and what a great time to return to the ballet. This show was beautiful and I never saw anyone out of step. Would recommend everyone go see The Nutcracker at Warne Theatre!
I’m a big Tchaikovsky fan, and the score was performed excellently. The athleticism of the dancers was very impressive to see.
The seats of the venue are amazingly uncomfortable and appear to be very old. The parking garage entrance is a complete cellular deadzone, which makes it impossible to open your tickets on the phone. Make sure you download your tickets before you get to the door.
For the money, a live orchestra would have made the experience worth the expense. The show seemed less magical by the use of music on tape. The dance numbers had long pauses between them, breaking the attention of the audience, who then showed little respect to the dancers by moving around the isles during the performance and talking. This distracted from the experience. I believe this will be the LAST Nutcracker performance I will pay for.
The Washington DC centered interpretation of The Nutcracker was forced and kind of confusing. If the program and other published explanation had not been available , we would have left the theater trying to figure out some of the characters. It felt pointless - so why bother. The quality of performance was fine , the theater is beautiful and as per usual , they need to double the women's room facilities!
Alas, our car decided that we need not attend the ballet, so stalled out on I-66, making us many friends. So we missed this year’s annual tradition, much to the disappointment of our granddaughters. Maybe next year, we will be more successful.
Always great to see the DC twist to this holiday classic - with cherry blossom twist to sugar plum fairies and Daniel Boone doing the Russian classic. With snow falling and charming details - we love this every year!
Having to show proof of vaccination and requirement for wearing a mask was perfect. I would have not purchased tickets without these safeguards. The show was fast moving and kept my young granddaughters fascinated throughout the performance. It was a wonderful experience from the dancing to the costumes to the scenery. It was all very professional. The only time I felt uneasy was at intermission. It was a mob scene out in the lobby. If anything had happened and everyone had to evacuate, it would have been impossible.
To start, entering into the theatre was not too diffucult. Finding our seats were easy since O have been there a few times. The show had a slight delay, which I did not mind. What I did mind, were the ushers allowing people to walk to their seat in the middle of a set. Typically, you wait in-between sets to allow people back to their seats. Even flashing the lights into our eyes had us frustrated. I can only base this rating off of what I was able to see since I was being blinded or blocked.
Some mishaps from student dancers, but otherwise a beautiful experience
Absolutely beautiful performance by all dancers! Loved it!
The customer service rep who I purchased my tickets from gave me the wrong time for the performance so unfortunately I missed the first act. In conversation with her I corrected her saying the performance was 1pm and she said no it’s at 2 PM.
The experience was excellent. The music and ballet were magical. Beautiful night in downtown Washington DC. The seats were too close. There was not enough social distancing. Even though lots of empty seats. There was no live orchestra. Too many people late for show allowed to move during performance.
I have been so many different Nutcracker Ballet performance. This is the worst show in my experience. The Warner Theater seem doesn’t know how to respect the show itself. The theater let people in and out middle of the show, and allow the food in the theater in this Covid era. And there are no social distance at all. It was very disappointed overall my experience. We pay $800 for that. The Warner Theater seriously need to consider to think how can be a good theater to respect ballet team and audience.
Amazing sound, costumes and dancers. We loved it and would go again tomorrow.
The Washington Ballet was beautiful!! It would be nice to hear a live orchestra with a professional ballet. As for the venue it was nice, great viewing from any spot in the venue with an up close, putting you in the story feeling. The only draw back……. Put the air on!!!! Nothing worse than a packed house with MASKS on and no air in the auditorium!!! It was stifling! That was the negative takeaway. The Venue needs to provide better ventilation for its audience to be able to enjoy the show . We were sweating as much as the dancers!!
I am treating myself to an east coast Nutcracker tour for 2021. Expecting to see very traditional consumes and sets, I was pleasantly surprised to see that this Nutcracker ballet put a Washington DC spin on the costumes and scenery, but kept the tradition! It was marvelous!! Well done and highly recommended. Good for all ages.
