About

Don't buy a gift; give an experience. This year, The Washington Ballet celebrates 15 years of its very-DC version of The Nutcracker, through December 28 at the historic Warner Theatre in downtown Washington DC.

Set to Tchaikovsky's magical score, this celebrated production set in 1882 early Georgetown has become the signature Nutcracker in our nation's capital. The curtain rises and the audience is transported back in time to a Georgetown mansion, where party guests include Frederick Douglass, John Paul Jones, Harriet Tubman, Ben Franklin and Thomas Jefferson. The Washington Ballet's iconic version is equal parts history lesson, mischief and humor. With General Washington as the heroic Nutcracker and George III as the Rat King, the story comes to life with over 100 dancers, intricate, stunning set designs and original custom costumes. Audiences will be captivated by stunning duets by Anacostia Native Americans and a springtime on the banks of the Potomac. Waltzing cherry blossoms, dancing cardinals and dancing sugar plums plus other enchanting adaptations make this unique production at the majestic Warner Theatre a special treat that continues to captivate audiences of all ages.

  • Great Performance

    by Glenn P on 12/30/21Warner Theatre - WashingtonRating: 4 out of 5

Overall it was a great performance. I must admit I prefer the more common choreography to the one we saw that was Americanized, but it's not a "show-stopper". Other than that, it was great and my three granddaughters sure had a great time.

  • Ballet good venue not as safe as could be

by Cm on 12/29/21Warner Theatre - WashingtonRating: 3 out of 5

Ballet was great but allowing everyone to eat and drink at their seats defeats having a mask mandate and keeping everyone safe. Was not happy about that part. False advertisement by the theater about mask mandates. They should make it clear that most around you won’t be wearing masks. Not safe w omicron raging. Vaccine proof at this point doesn’t keep anyone safe if masks are off

  • Beautiful

by Cait on 12/29/21Warner Theatre - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

The theatre was beautiful and well organized. Staff was extremely helpful. Testing was available outside the theatre for anyone that needed it to enter, was done quickly. Show was gorgeous and timed well, especially for children. Set and costumes and dancers were breath taking and so fun to watch. It was a really fun evening.

  • Lovely Holiday Experience

by Howard N. Townes on 12/29/21Warner Theatre - WashingtonRating: 4 out of 5

The Nutcracker experience is a delightful one that all should enjoy in a lifetime. Easily an unforgettable night of wonder as the spectacular music and ballet performance takes you on a journey. A bit pricey, but worth the splurge especially as a Holi-Date Night.

  • No live orchestra was a huge disappointment.

by Rob on 12/27/21Warner Theatre - WashingtonRating: 3 out of 5

Also many patrons in cramped theater not wearing masks. A pity because production pretty good. But lack of orchestra very distracting.

  • Disappointed in Service

by DC local on 12/27/21Warner Theatre - WashingtonRating: 1 out of 5

Cornonavirus rose by over 200% in Washington DC Christmas week. My husband is 80 and I am 74. We wanted to cancel our tickets. We had planned to go with vaccinated grandchildren but felt it was risk for all. There was no way to get a refund or credit. We stayed home but lost several hundred dollars. Is there no concern or allowance for public health? We have probably attended the Washington Ballet Nutcracker 8 times in past 10 years. Doubt we will go again. No regard for community health - disappointing........

  • Just wonderful!

Beautiful theater and fantastic Nutcracker performance! So festive!

  • The show was fine but the crowd was not

by Nick on 12/27/21Warner Theatre - WashingtonRating: 3 out of 5

The show was a more modern take, more comedy and playing to the audience than I’ve seen but it was a good show. The second the lights were down people got up to leave, people arrived late, people were texting, a lady brought her dog (it was a little Chihuahua so not a service animal) and the people behind us openly talked about leaving their trash on the floor instead of tossing it.

  • Far away

by Dan on 12/27/21Warner Theatre - WashingtonRating: 4 out of 5

My seat is really far away from stage, people in the front of me is too tall and hide the stage.

  • Fantastic!

by Paul and Char on 12/27/21Warner Theatre - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

My wife and I are big ballet fans and have seen many versions of The Nutcracker both live and on video by some of the world's great companies. For some reason The Washington Ballet simply wasn't on our radar. The Washington Ballet's Nutcracker appeared during my online surfing and their take on it sounded innovative, so we gave it a try. Good decision!! This was maybe be the best Nutcracker either of us have ever seen. The colonial America gave the story a fun twist, especially in the various "nationality" dances in the second act. Costumes and sets were all first rate. What really impressed us the most was the dancing. Everyone from the little kids, to the corps, to the soloists was really excellent, dancing some innovative and difficult choreography. One male dancer in particular made a huge impression on us. I don't know who he was because the program lists multiple rotating dancers for all of the roles, but this guy was perfection. His pirouettes looked like he was nailed in place and his leaps had Michael Jordan-like hang time. Our performance was the matinee on Christmas eve day, and I hope you can pass our comments on to whoever danced that afternoon.

  • Best Performance ever!

  • Ok for the holiday but ... left me underwhelmed and wanting

    by J. D. on 12/27/21Warner Theatre - WashingtonRating: 2 out of 5

I have absolutely no idea what I watched. I thought it was going to be a performance put on by a professional ballet company, the Washington ballet company. While the dancers were lovely and talented they were not professionals, more likely they were seniors in ballet school. They were good dancer but not what I planned on watching. Their parents and family members who were clearly in the audience were super proud though. Moreover, the artistic liberties and choices made for this production were beyond baffling. Why was some poor boy dressed as a cat during the dance of the sugarplum fairies? And children dressed as ,I guess flowers , from Alice in wonderland? Davy Crockett made an appearance, i believe. Or at least his hat and fringe did. Why were there two random Union soldiers when everyone else was dressed for the 1880s ? What did I watch? I went it in knowing George Washington was the ‘nutcracker’ but there was no point it making him so. He was only there for the battle against the mouse king , who were the British red coats. And then never mentioned again. What was the point ? were they trying to attract Hamilton fans? Is it because dc is named after Washington? Wait , no I lied. they put Clara in a hot air balloon with Washington’s face on it. There was also a river boat. Baffled . I also feel like they cut out some dances or scenes. I went with my sister , whose never seen the nutcracker, and she had absolutely no idea what was going on in the second act. I honestly don’t think I’ll ever get her to another ballet after this. At some point she turned to me and asked if I paid for this. I am baffled, underwhelmed, confused and full of regret. It was not worth the money or the health risk. If it was meant to be a ballet schools winter performance, great. Its nice they can put it on in such lovely theatre after 2 years of COVID. But no it’s was advertised as the Washington ballet. That’s what I paid for and was so excited to see since October. Not whatever that was. All the children in the troupe were wearing masks which was nice. The Warner Theatre is gorgeous. I bought a T-shirt which was sold of a series of boxes around a table in the lobby. I’m so disappointed.

  • Show Amazing, but Spacing not COVID Ready

by Alina on 12/27/21Warner Theatre - WashingtonRating: 4 out of 5

The show was absolutely amazing, ad transitions were flawless. Unfortunately, with as many seats that were empty, the location did not consider have one or two seats between families/attendees. The vaccination card review at the door was not verified to each person, viewed with trust that the attendee/family was being truthful. I recommend considering the risk of seating right in front you or beside an individual you don’t know sneezing in your direction.

  • Amazing display

    by Chris W. on 12/27/21Warner Theatre - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

Amazing display of storytelling, grace, strength, and beauty. The Warner Theater is equally beautiful. Highly recommended!

  • Whimsical and Wounderful

    by Vital-Reads on 12/26/21Warner Theatre - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

The ballet was a whimsical joy to watch. The set and costumes were beautiful. I adored the way the younger children's masks were incorporated so well with the costumes. There were lots of little bits of humor and enough color and excitement to keep the kids entertained and engaged. The Spring Queen, Ashley Murphy-Wilson, was simply stunning. I am by no means an expert in ballet but her lines were so clean that I believe she had show-stopping technique. My gaze tends to roam during the performance but she kept me entranced. For me, she stole the show. The Chinese-homage dance and the clown dances were the best of the variety portion and I believe the crowd agreed based on the applause. This would definitely be a production that is fun for the whole family. I have seen the nutcracker many times and this was a great rendition. As for the venue, the Warner Theater is definitely beautiful, no doubt. The staff was all polite and professional. My main issue would be the seating. The chairs were small and tightly packed. It felt like being on an airplane, but with even less legroom. My 'handicap accessible' seat differed from the others by the fact that the outside armrest flipped up. That's it. The wheelchair-accessible seats were folding chairs at the back with a simply terrible view. The lounge bathrooms didn't have an accessible bathroom either. It wasn't for lack of room. There were 16 stalls in the ladies' room, I believe. It wouldn't have been difficult to combine two and have at least one accessible stall. So, while beautiful, this theater certainly has drawbacks for the mobility challenged.
