About

Don't buy a gift; give an experience. This year, The Washington Ballet celebrates 15 years of its very-DC version of The Nutcracker, through December 28 at the historic Warner Theatre in downtown Washington DC.

Set to Tchaikovsky's magical score, this celebrated production set in 1882 early Georgetown has become the signature Nutcracker in our nation's capital. The curtain rises and the audience is transported back in time to a Georgetown mansion, where party guests include Frederick Douglass, John Paul Jones, Harriet Tubman, Ben Franklin and Thomas Jefferson. The Washington Ballet's iconic version is equal parts history lesson, mischief and humor. With General Washington as the heroic Nutcracker and George III as the Rat King, the story comes to life with over 100 dancers, intricate, stunning set designs and original custom costumes. Audiences will be captivated by stunning duets by Anacostia Native Americans and a springtime on the banks of the Potomac. Waltzing cherry blossoms, dancing cardinals and dancing sugar plums plus other enchanting adaptations make this unique production at the majestic Warner Theatre a special treat that continues to captivate audiences of all ages.

  • Waste of time and money

by Completely unhappy with the Washington Ballet Nutcracker on 12/14/21Warner Theatre - WashingtonRating: 1 out of 5

I traveled four hours to see this performance. It was a waste of time. It started almost 30 minutes late due to "long lines outside". Whose fault is that that people cannot arrive on time? So unprofessional for this to start late and even more unprofessional that the staff don't close the doors when the performance starts. Also, I felt like everyone was going to a circus and not a Nutcracker show. They allowed food and drink into the theatre and we sat listening to people eat popcorn, cotton candy, other candy and fidget with other noise wrappers was ridiculous. Also, it seemed like they tried to pack George Washington everywhere in the show and it just came across as terribly tacky. Also, the cast was a mismatch and I thought the entire production was not organized or choreographed well and it was complete organized chaos from a logistic and artistic perspective. They tried to make this Nutcracker everything to everyone and it completely fell apart at the seams. My advice: fly to San Francisco and see a classy Nutcracker with the San Francisco Ballet. That's what I'll do from now on. This production is a total waste of time and money and I will absolutely 100% never attend it again.

This was my first time seeing The Nutcracker and it was amazing! Ticketing and entry were seamless and the show was amazing!

  • Was ok.

by Lauren on 12/13/21Warner Theatre - WashingtonRating: 3 out of 5

Based on what my 10 year old said. The dancers were great. The story line started good but then got lost in the dancing that didn’t seem to help end, or follow the story. The second act it was like they were just dancing to dance not to tell the story.

My family and I had an amazing time at The Washington Ballet’s Nutcracker. I would have to say it’s one of the best nutcrackers I’ve ever seen, and I’ve seen quite a few.

Such a fantastic show. So gorgeous and incredibly well produced. My five and six year olds daughters thoroughly enjoy it and love dancing along. So appreciate the sweet innocence of The Nutcracker…

  • Outstanding

by otto on 12/11/21Warner Theatre - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

The Warner theater is a wonderful venue in which to watch a ballet. The Washington ballet's performance was absolutely world class. The sets were very well done and added much to the overall experience. I really appreciate the fact that they used physical background sets as opposed to some other Nutcracker interpretations which rely mainly on projected scenes. The whole experience was magical, highly recommended!

  • Awesome performance

by Tessie on 12/11/21Warner Theatre - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

The seats were great. We could see everything and it was beautiful. The only difficult thing, was pulling our tickets from our phones because of Wi-Fi connections. Suggest putting hotspots throughout the entrance so patrons can access their tickets easier.

  • Incredible performance!

I love the Nutcracker and the Washington Ballet's version was amazing! Sugar Plum and Cavalier were stunning and the Clara on 12/5 (matinee) was superb!

  • Great show!

by Bamabell on 12/7/21Warner Theatre - WashingtonRating: 4 out of 5

The ballet itself was fabulous! The sets were incredible and the dancers were amazing! The show did begin late and even though it was stated that those who came after it began would be seated later, they were allowed to come in and walk in front of the audience. Also, people were yelling and cat calling during the show which was distracting. People had drinks which spilled. The show itself was fabulous but for the price of tickets I expected not to deal with so many distractions.

  • Unfortunately there was no show

Very nice staff. Great performance and wonderful presentation of the Nutcracker.

  • Great Performance .... BURNING HOT VENUE....No Masking Rules

    by V on 12/1/21Warner Theatre - WashingtonRating: 3 out of 5

The performance itself was beautiful. The we were sweating because the heat in the venue was way too much, it felt like it was 85-90 degrees inside. There were a ton of people inside not wearing masks and no one who worked there made sure that the rules were being followed so I felt unsafe.

  • The show was very performed

by Bill on 11/30/21Warner Theatre - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

The dancers were very professional and the sets were well done

  • Nice show, but venue was not good.

by Mimi on 11/30/21Warner Theatre - WashingtonRating: 3 out of 5

We enjoyed the ballet, with its amazing performers, costumes and scenery. However, the Warner theater did not do enough to make us feel comfortable and safe. The ventilation in the balcony was terrible; it felt like it was about 95 degrees. The long intermission and availability of refreshments meant that many people circulated around and had to remove their masks in order to eat. Even though vaccinations and recent tests were required, new variants are highly contagious, so it would not take a lot of fresh cases to make this a super spreader event.

  • Magic of live theatre is back!

by Family with young kids on 11/30/21Warner Theatre - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

It was wonderful to see live theatre again, and it was truly spectacular. Our kids - 5 and 9 - were enthralled throughout. The costumes and choreography were beautiful, plus there were fun and cute parts of the show. We felt safe at the venue with required vaccinations and tests for kids who weren't yet fully vaccinated. Most people were masked inside most of the time (although because there is food and drink, not always). It was a truly a delightful experience, and a great gift at the start of the Christmas season!

  • Amazing dancing!

The 2021 Nutcracker was out of this world! Costumes and dancing were the best.
