Don't buy a gift; give an experience. This year, The Washington Ballet celebrates 15 years of its very-DC version of The Nutcracker, through December 28 at the historic Warner Theatre in downtown Washington DC.
Set to Tchaikovsky's magical score, this celebrated production set in 1882 early Georgetown has become the signature Nutcracker in our nation's capital. The curtain rises and the audience is transported back in time to a Georgetown mansion, where party guests include Frederick Douglass, John Paul Jones, Harriet Tubman, Ben Franklin and Thomas Jefferson. The Washington Ballet's iconic version is equal parts history lesson, mischief and humor. With General Washington as the heroic Nutcracker and George III as the Rat King, the story comes to life with over 100 dancers, intricate, stunning set designs and original custom costumes. Audiences will be captivated by stunning duets by Anacostia Native Americans and a springtime on the banks of the Potomac. Waltzing cherry blossoms, dancing cardinals and dancing sugar plums plus other enchanting adaptations make this unique production at the majestic Warner Theatre a special treat that continues to captivate audiences of all ages.
Beautiful dancing and artistry. My family loved it!
The costumes, sets, mysic, and if coyrse the dancers were fantastic. Just loved it. Absolutely hated the ticket situation, where one could only use a Live Nation app to get in. No screen shots or printouts allowed. Nope. What a sleezy way to get access to email addresses for post- show advertising. I immediately uninstalled the app from my phone.
My two best friends and I go to The Nutcracker every year as a part of our holiday tradition. We so missed it during COVID. We made it back this year. We had so much fun and the show was great!
This was my second time seeing The Nutcracker this season and it was just beautiful! The dancers were spectacular as always and it just always puts me in the Christmas spirit.
This is the first time I have bought tickets and that was for my friends since it was so difficult for me to find how to transfer nor print out ( there is no print out! Option.) we couldn’t make it to the show!!!!!! It was a big disappointment
This was the most moving nutcracker performance I’ve ever seen. From the dancers, to the choreography, costuming, set design, lighting. It was utterly stunning from start to finish.
The performance was fantastic, and of course the children and cast delivered a delightful Nutcracker performance. Unfortunately, several experiences were a distraction to enjoying a full holiday outing from arrival to departure. Live Nation gave the option purchase parking, which was convenient, $17 and connected to the Warner Theater. However, the parking "ticket" in the app does not provide the exact location, so we had to drive around the block to locate the entrance. Also the ticket did not give a "ticket" number. Once inside the garage, a parking attendant would NOT accept the parking "ticket" as displayed in the app and continued to insist that we provide a ticket number for a company name that was not associated with the app. HIGH FRUSTRATION! We were allowed to park after almost 5 minutes of back and forth. (Note that the name of the parking app was posted on the window of the parking attendant station, but that was ignored and not honored when I pointed it out!!!) The Building Staff are VERY KNOWLEDGABLE and HELPFUL. One older gentleman knew the restaurant we were going before show time and gave us perfect directions to get through the building and access the street toward the restaurant. Once inside, the lobby was jammed packed with people, literally shoulder to shoulder. (Way too small) Getting drinks and snacks was EXCESSIVELY EXPENSIVE! No signage was posted providing the costs of the snacks or drinks. We ordered 2 regular "glasses" of wine, 3 waters, 2 brownies and 1 skittles for $73. INSANE! The wine tasted very bad and cheap - a true waste of money. We sat in the upper section. The seats are very close together and scrunched my knees (I'm 5'2'). Being in the upper section, the view of the ceiling shown many of the lights out in the "grand" chandelier, and paints was peeling in several sections in ceiling. Leaving was more crowded than when we arrived, which meant that any souvenir that we wanted to purchase was impossible. Next time, we'll go to a different venue to enjoy the performance.
The performance was great, except I was disappointed to have the music just be a recording and not a real orchestra. But This theatre venue is not up to par. My knees were against the seat in front of me and I am 5’8”. The seating was tiny, old and rickety. We couldn’t see over the heads of the people in front of us. It was extremely drafty and cold. There was no space or anywhere to put your drinks/snacks, so we were forced to hold them (in flimsy plastic cups) the whole show. No elevator for people that might need it, and a very small entrance/intermission area. No parking. This venue should not be priced at the same level as other more modern, spacious, accommodating venues.
Love seeing this show every year! Definitely the most family-friendly nutcracker :)
This is our second time attending. This events never falls short of wonderful.
What a fabulous venue to kick off the holiday season. The show was amazing from beginning to end.
Great costumes, decor but this is not a classical ballet. If you have ever seen ballet in Europe - you will never go to this. Excellent performance without live music , without orchestra for kids 5-10 years old to have fun. Overpriced and shouldn’t be called a ballet
The costumes are amazing as well as all of the dancing and music! Loved it!
The Warner Theatre is a beautiful and historic venue which was great to see on our recent trip to DC. The ballet itself was less than spectacular, particularly for the ticket price. The sets and costumes were dated, the music was piped in and the main Corp de Ballet dancers were overshadowed by the many children in the cast. Having seen the Nutcracker other times with other ballet companies, this would rank towards the bottom. It was a nice event for an introduction to the ballet and we certainly enjoyed it, but if you are looking for anything more than a nice way to celebrate the holidays with your children or grandchildren, this is likely not for you.
It was really a site to see, the dancers are so talented, i loved all the different countries representing and uncle drosselmyer was one of my favorite characters as well as clara and the main ballerinas, everything was unique the backdrops and scenes were amazing and costumes for ballerinas were gorgeous, the only two things I would change is i wish after the show they are on stage and we could take pictures, i wanted to take pictures of the ballerinas so bad because they kept posing . Also the seats for this venue really need to be redone, their really uncomfortable and outdated, no drink holders makes it hard to clap for the entertainment which i felt bad also if you have a big butt it doesn’t fit very well and the person next to you is kinda really on top of you…
The Washington Ballet’s performance of the Nutcracker is a quintessential to-do during the holiday season in an amazing, historical, and beautiful theater, the Warner Theater. The performance is A+, you will not be disappointed.
This Nutcracker has come out much stronger than last year's pandemic season. It's great to see the school's true talent on display again.
Overall, I enjoyed the performance. I've seen the Nutcracker Ballet at least 15 times over the years. I would rate this performance in the middle. Overall good, but the interpretation wasn't as good as most others I've seen.
GREAT!! Interpretation of the Nutcracker. Loved all the different costumes. The ballet quality was consistently excellent. A GREAT!! HAPPY HAPPY Holidays event!! 🎉🎊
The show was great and I have to say, as a former Black ballerina, I was pleasantly surprised at the diversity on stage. The show was engaging and well done. The venue was nice and the staff were efficient and organized. We will definitely return for future events and the 2023 Nutcracker performance.
