THE BRILLIANT ORIGINAL RETURNS "MORE SPECTACULAR THAN EVER" - Sunday Express

The Phantom is back to thrill audiences once again! Cameron Mackintosh presents a revitalized new production of Andrew Lloyd Webber's legendary musical, THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, which was rapturously received by London critics when it reopened in 2021. Featuring Maria Björnson's brilliant original design and based on the celebrated direction of Harold Prince, with musical staging and choreography by Gillian Lynne, PHANTOM will launch a new multi-year North American tour in November 2025, premiering at the Cadillac Palace Theatre in Chicago December 11, 2025 - February 1, 2026.

THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA is widely considered one of the most beautiful and spectacular productions in history, playing to over 160 million people in 47 territories and 195 cities in 21 languages. Andrew Lloyd Webber's romantic, haunting, and soaring score includes "The Music of the Night," "All I Ask of You," "Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again," "Masquerade," and the iconic title song. It tells the tale of a disfigured musical genius known only as 'The Phantom' who haunts the depths of the Paris Opera House. Mesmerized by the talents and beauty of a young soprano, Christine, The Phantom lures her as his protégé and falls fiercely in love with her. Unaware of Christine's love for Raoul, The Phantom's obsession sets the scene for a dramatic turn of events where jealousy, madness, and passions collide.

  • Exemplary!

by pakitkat on 1/17/14Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

All the voices were exquisite. The Phantom, being the bad boy that he is, still exuded a sexiness that I found very appealing. I almost wanted Christine to stay with him. The scenery was very well-done. I saw the Phantom in New York and I found this production as good or maybe even better than it.

  • Greatest performance EVER!!!!!!!!!

by Mysticookiebear on 1/17/14Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

If you are on the fence on whether you should see this, don't think about it, DO IT!!!!! I have seen many musicals and many productions but this is by far the best show that I have ever seen. Not my favorite, but definitely the best show I have ever seen. From the casting, to the set, to the lighting, to the costumes, to the stage design, this production was out of this world! The set design was nothing short of genius, their ability to transition to different scenes in a blink of an eye was masterful and most impressive. The enormous pillar that was used is the single most impressive piece of stage machinery that I have ever seen and when you see it, you will know exactly what I mean. The costumes were spot on with vibrant colors which really helped to enhance the scene and each of the characters. Their attention to detail especially when it comes to lighting was second to none. Try to pay attention to their use of shadows through various scenes throughout the performance, it is very subtle, but I appreciated how much work they put into displaying such seemingly mundane but truly powerful aspects of lighting. The cast was nothing short of perfection. They were, what do the kids call it today, "Drift Compatible" aka they were all in perfect synchronization with each other and the chemistry was electrifying. The Phantom is the single best performer that I have seen in any musical. He was exploding with so much fire and passion that in the more emotional scenes it seemed surreal. There was actually a point when he was singing that I looked around and thought to myself "is this real right now?!?" His performance will haunt me until the end of my days and is now the new gold standard for what a performer should be. Long story short, go and see this beautiful display of on stage magic! You will fall in love with it all over again!

  • The phantom is a phantom (sarcasm)

In the 2nd row you can not see most of the efects in the ground. For example the water and you pay full ticket. The performance of the phantom was awfull, as singer and as actor. I'm really dissapointted with the espectacle in general. Ar least The scenary / background is amazing and the other actors are really good.

  • Fabulous Phantom

Production staging was different than the original we had seen 20 years ago. Smaller scale, yet exciting. We had Broadway Suite tickets as well and it was VERY convenient, a great idea to enhance your experience.

    by Cynthia3107 on 1/16/14Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

I was mesmerized by the sounds of the voices clearly heard by the clear speakers surround ing us up in the crow's nest, the sets were so clever, the costumes incredibly beautiful and of course the excellence of the orchestra.

  • Phantom of the Opera is amazing!

This is the second time I've seen Phantom of the Opera, and it is still one of my favorites. I bought the tickets for my daughter and her husband. But her husband got scheduled to work - - so unfortunately ;) I HAD to go with!

  • Fantastic sets in a great venue

    by PhantomFantastic21 on 1/15/14Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

This is the third time for the theatre Phantom and first for this new production, watched the movie and read the book so I will take some liberty to compare and contrast. By far, this theatre production has the best sets, lighting, and "special effects" - wowed by the extending steps to the underground cavern of the opera house but wished for a better Masquerade scene, like the movie, and remembered fondly the chandelier in the previous production swinging above the main floor rather than the abrupt vertical drop in this interpretation. The Phantom (Grodin) did an excellent job . . . acting good and voice, while struggling for depth and clarity at times, demonstrated the passion required for the role. Carlotta (Fontaine) took a more refined role in this production and her voice was outstanding - clear and tone accurate. Christine's (Udine) role was well played and her singing well done, but not as remarkable as in the earlier production. Meg's (Florence) voice was outstanding! Overall 4 stars - disappointed slightly by the relatively modest depth and clarity of the voices.

The show was the best I've seen! The talent was second to none! However, our seats were at the end of the row so the far edge of the stage was out of view, but we didn't really miss much.

Loved it! But missed the original version. The scenario was great as usual.

  • Wonderful staging, the rest was ok - opening night

by JukeM on 1/15/14Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 3 out of 5

Having seen Phantom a half a dozen time it is hard not to compare other versions I have attended. The Good: The staging for this version was the best of all (with the exception of the boat staging which was weak) prior versions. The constant motion and the level of detail in the sets was nothing short of outstanding. A mechanical tour de force. The acting and singing, while good, was uninspired. The technical part is there, the emotion was lacking. Overall, it was worth going, but I was very glad this was not the first production I had seen because I would have wondered why this play is such a classic had this been my first viewing.

This was truly fantastic. I am not big on this type of event, but I loved it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Great acting/singing but just not the same.....

by ChrisChicago on 1/15/14Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 3 out of 5

It was a wonderul performance - the acting, singing, etc. were all fantastic. BUT nothing that was changed added to the show. Part of what made it such an amazing show was the set/effects and I felt like this was lacking. You can't have a masquerade without the iconic staircase and "red death" costume, you can't have this amazing chandelier that is WAY under used and the grave yard scene is probably the most awkward staging I have ever seen. The Phantom's lair looked like a hipster kid's college apartment. Again, beautiful performances, but just lacking the original magic from the show.

  • First rate version!

by ChicagoCo on 1/15/14Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

Having seen Phantom in New York, London and Chicago and always loved it, I was concerned this traveling production might disappoint. It certainly did not. My husband and I both found this production made the fine points of the story more accessible, helped in part by the pinpoint clarity of enunciation, and also by the emphases in delivery and the stage sets. At our performance, Cooper Gordon played the Phantom. He was terrific. The show is simply magical.

  • Best Phantom ever

    by poppy26 on 1/15/14Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

While the theatre needs to learn how to manage crowds that size, in all it was worth it. I was disappointed when I read that the understudy was playing the Phantom that evening. I've seen Phantom in London so there's a lot to live up to. From the moment the "understudy" took the stage it was clear he was no understudy. I absolutely loved the production. I went home and bought tickets for the last showing. The set and stage were phenomenal and Cooper Grodin was the most emotional Phantom I've ever seen.

Awesome show! I've seen many Broadway type shows and this one ranks as one of the best. It's really a must see!!!

  • Exquisite emotional experience!

    by AEL82 on 1/15/14Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

Having seen Phantom several times over the years, I simply wanted to have that pleasure again. Instead the actors not only had great voices but portrayed emotions so well the audience could be drawn right in to the drama. For me the Phantom has always been a sympathetic character and through Cooper Grodin's performance his pain overwhelmed me to tears. His lengthy scene without mask and hair was over the top and a great addition to the play. And the other actors were equally talented. The show was an emotional tour de force. Magnificent! I loved the new stage settings with the moveable rooms and levels, the ceiling mirror for Masquerade, the collapse of the building, Phantom's home and of course the boating scenes. The falling chandelier was waited for and missed. Nonetheless, this was the best Phantom I have seen and I thank you.
