THE BRILLIANT ORIGINAL RETURNS "MORE SPECTACULAR THAN EVER" - Sunday Express

The Phantom is back to thrill audiences once again! Cameron Mackintosh presents a revitalized new production of Andrew Lloyd Webber's legendary musical, THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, which was rapturously received by London critics when it reopened in 2021. Featuring Maria Björnson's brilliant original design and based on the celebrated direction of Harold Prince, with musical staging and choreography by Gillian Lynne, PHANTOM will launch a new multi-year North American tour in November 2025, premiering at the Cadillac Palace Theatre in Chicago December 11, 2025 - February 1, 2026.

THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA is widely considered one of the most beautiful and spectacular productions in history, playing to over 160 million people in 47 territories and 195 cities in 21 languages. Andrew Lloyd Webber's romantic, haunting, and soaring score includes "The Music of the Night," "All I Ask of You," "Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again," "Masquerade," and the iconic title song. It tells the tale of a disfigured musical genius known only as 'The Phantom' who haunts the depths of the Paris Opera House. Mesmerized by the talents and beauty of a young soprano, Christine, The Phantom lures her as his protégé and falls fiercely in love with her. Unaware of Christine's love for Raoul, The Phantom's obsession sets the scene for a dramatic turn of events where jealousy, madness, and passions collide.

  • If this is your first time, you'll love it

by BakeFly on 1/22/14Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

The perfomance was very good. The talent is incredible. But, I must admit I prefer the original production. With that said, I feel in this production, the plot was easier to follow. The personalities of some of the roles were altered slightly, yielding a different overall less sinister feel, especially in the first act. The sets were very creative. The audience gave a standing ovation, with which I did not concur. None of the performers really stood out for me compared to other productions. Were they bad? Of course not! I did get goose bumps listening to Christine, and from Raul, but I did not fall in love with them. We were fortunate to see Phantom on Broadway on what was the last night for the Phantom actor. He was incredible. Previously, we had seen Phantom at the Auditorium in Chicago. In that production, the Phantom was great but I fell in love with Christine. I prefered her performance to that found on the CD. With the current production, I was also disappointed with the instrumentation in the pit. I missed the trumpet and bass trombone.

  • The lighting was excellent...and that's about it

by JuniperWindsong on 1/22/14Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 2 out of 5

Having seen Phantom of the Opera several times I can candidly say this is the worst live performance I have ever seen because I know what it should sound like when done well, and even what it can sound like when done less excellently. This was worse than even the high school production I once attended. Neither Christine, the phantom, nor Raoul were able to sing their parts, the minor characters far outclassed them in both acting and singing. The actress playing Christine sung sporadically, preferring to sing-speak her way through her many songs to the point where my companions and I were gripping are arms in discomfort. Raoul shouted musically mostly on pitch, and the phantom was nearly incomprehensible! I have this performance two stars because the rest of the cast did an excellent job and the lighting and backdrops were superb, but that, for me, is not enough to justify the money I paid to see this show. I was very disappointed, as was my sister whose first time it was seeing any live performance. I would not recommend this performance to anyone who enjoys music.

  • Best production yet

This couldn't be better loved every minute of this production company's performance

  • Phantom Revamped

    by spiderman13 on 1/22/14Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

The new Phantom of the Opera production was, in a word, exhilarating. I saw The Phantom a number of years ago when it was last in Chicago. This version resembled the film more, with extra emphasis on the characters and the backstory of the Phantom. The acting was solid, the singing was very strong, and the overall show was well done and very entertaining.

  • Disappointed ; Over-Acting ; Music Suffers

    by Nick059 on 1/22/14Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 3 out of 5

The point of this musical should be the MUSIC. But this version is over directed, over choreographed, and over acted. During most of the signature/keynote songs, the cast is moving too much and the singing suffers. People want to hear these significant numbers sung as beatifully as possible. But the actors/actresses are running around and falling down and getting up and waving their arms, etc. IT'S OK TO STAND STILL FOR A COUPLE OF MINUTES AND FOCUS ON THE MUSIC!! Sheesh. The redesigned sets and staging were just fine. And the cast is talented. But if you want to hear your favorite numbers sung with beauty and passion, you'll not be happy with thus version of Phantom. A shame.

  • Excellent show! Great seats

by Niceguykev on 1/22/14Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

Great show. Love the revamp. Would see it again in a heartbeat. Wife and I had great seats. Cadillac theater was easy access, not a bad seat in the house.

  • The Phantom did not disappoint

by Catsie on 1/22/14Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

I have seen the Phantom 3 previous times. One of my faves. The sets and costuming were spectacular. The singing was magnificent. Loved the character of the blonde gal who was close to Christine. She popped in her Performance. Not sure about the added comedy. I'm sure I would see this performance again. Thanks

  • Phantom of the Opera for a 13 Year Old? Oh Yes!!

by Anonymous on 1/22/14Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

As a birthday gift, I took my 13 year old granddaughter to see Phantom. Had no idea how she would react. She loved it!!!! Couldn't stop talking about it after the show. On the ride home she went on You Tube to listen to the music again and again. Great experience for both of us!

  • New and Improved

    by r1il on 1/22/14Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

While the songs are all the same, this looks and feels like a completely new production of this show. The set design and staging are just fantastic. They help to make the story feel fresh and new. Some of the performers are not as strong as previous productions, but taken as a group with the new sets, staging, updates, and changes to the show as a whole I'd easily recommend this show to anyone.

  • Good but not AMAZING

    by Shar380 on 1/22/14Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 3 out of 5

The opera was good overall. The guy who played the phantom was not that good....His performance in the first act was disappointing, the second act was much better. To me, the phantom should be the best singer/performer but I found myself liking other characters voices better and thinking they should have cast them as the phantom. The changes to the Masquerade song were disappointing. I enjoyed the dance/costumes but to have the phantom come down the stairs is epic!....you don’t mess with that! Again, overall the show was good but this was my 3rd time seeing this opera and I was not very impressed.

  • New Production Enjoyable (old production better)

    by cgd7 on 1/22/14Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

Having seen Phantom three times prior to this production, I have to say that this was well-done. The new production is a scaled-down version of the 'old' show. It's grittier, less lavish, more representational than presentational. Though well-performed and well-sung, I have to say I prefer the over-the-top fantasy and glamour of the old production.

  • Excellent

    by tgplus4 on 1/22/14Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

The show was absolutely riveting...and the sets were amazing. We had the understudy for Christine, and you would have never known it. Beautiful voice! Gotta give props to the orchestra too. It was if we were listening to the recorded soundtrack. All in all, a must see for live theater.

  • Phantom was spectacular!

by OmahaLovesTheater on 1/22/14Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

From the moment the "lots" were called in the first act, my attention was grasped until the very end with the magical disappearance of the Phantom. The Cadillac theater is breathtaking so it just adds to the ambience of the show. Bravo to the cast and the amazing accompanying orchestra. Very memorable experience all around!

  • Lacks passion

by Anonymous on 1/22/14Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 2 out of 5

Although the stage design was impressive, the phantom's voice and lead Christine's were not. Both had superficial voices which lacked power and depth. I tried very hard to get into this production, but only felt my emotions stir once throughout the whole play.

  • Go to see!!

    by mariemac4 on 1/22/14Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

The voices were amazing. I really liked the new stage. A bit hard to understand some parts in the upper balcony.

  • by Anonymous on 1/22/14Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

Awesome! Best production of Phantom I have ever seen!

  • by Famile11 on 1/21/14Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 3 out of 5

Disappointed in the view from our seats! View completely blocked several times throughout the show. Ticket prices too high for the quality of the seats. The Phantom's performance was a little odd~

  • Not as powerful as previous Chicago productions

by tiosdyosf on 1/21/14Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 3 out of 5

I saw Phantom of the Opera about 15 -17 years ago at the Auditorium, then I saw it in Chicago again a few years later. These productions were much more powerful than the one currently playing in Chicago. Some of it could be attributed to the smaller stage and the props/scenes, but that is not the most of it. Raoul was boisterous and cocky rather than romantic; Christine's voice was not markedly different from Carlotta's; and the Phantom was not as sympathetic of a character (creating that tension between good and evil) as in previous productions.

  • AMAZING!

by debfitz on 1/21/14Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

This event was beyond SUPERB! The staging was the BEST I've ever seen! Just perfection! As soon as we left the theatre, we wanted to buy tickets for another performance of Phantom!!!!!! You will not be disappointed!!! A NUMBER one!!!

  • A must see

by Anonymous on 1/21/14Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

Phantom of the Opera is amazing. Great music. Very realistic, with fog/mist, fire, gunshots, and strobe lights. The ingenuity of the set design is incredible how they transition from scene to scene and really make the story come to life. A must see.
