THE BRILLIANT ORIGINAL RETURNS "MORE SPECTACULAR THAN EVER" - Sunday Express

The Phantom is back to thrill audiences once again! Cameron Mackintosh presents a revitalized new production of Andrew Lloyd Webber's legendary musical, THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, which was rapturously received by London critics when it reopened in 2021. Featuring Maria Björnson's brilliant original design and based on the celebrated direction of Harold Prince, with musical staging and choreography by Gillian Lynne, PHANTOM will launch a new multi-year North American tour in November 2025, premiering at the Cadillac Palace Theatre in Chicago December 11, 2025 - February 1, 2026.

THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA is widely considered one of the most beautiful and spectacular productions in history, playing to over 160 million people in 47 territories and 195 cities in 21 languages. Andrew Lloyd Webber's romantic, haunting, and soaring score includes "The Music of the Night," "All I Ask of You," "Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again," "Masquerade," and the iconic title song. It tells the tale of a disfigured musical genius known only as 'The Phantom' who haunts the depths of the Paris Opera House. Mesmerized by the talents and beauty of a young soprano, Christine, The Phantom lures her as his protégé and falls fiercely in love with her. Unaware of Christine's love for Raoul, The Phantom's obsession sets the scene for a dramatic turn of events where jealousy, madness, and passions collide.

  • disappointing

The pacing of the show was not good also the transitions from scene to scene seemed to be a bit combersome, Acting was weak no chemistry between the leads or any of the actors. I did like parts of the set design. The choreography was laking. Had some great voices, needed to work on diction. The candilier was a total bust. It just did not have that WOW that the orginal did :(!!!! Don't change something that already is great unless you make it even better, which this fell short of.

  • New Phantom Lives Up to Tradition

by AnotherOldtimer on 1/24/14Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

The newly staged version of Phantom provides insights into the characters and the setting that are intriguing. Much of the new staging is brilliant, but the signature crashing chandelier moment is significantly reduced in this version. Once you get past that (I think it was a strategic mistake to toy with that scene) everything else is exciting and greatly entertaining. Across the board, the actors are perfectly suited for their parts. The quality of this show is first class.

  • Why mess with perfection?

Having seen Phantom 4 times already, I was curious to see what had been changed in this version billed as a "re-staged" production. Well, Cameron Mackintosh has removed all the iconic sets and brilliant visual imagery, resulting in a show that feels like there just wasn't enough money to do it right. Gone is the floating staircase where the Phantom leads Christine down to his lair; gone are the chandeliers rising up out of the misty lake as he directs his boat across the water. Instead we have a very brief descent down a staircase with their safety harnesses glinting in the lights, to reach a boat which goes about 10 feet to his stripped down man cave. Everything else is completely different too, using only the front third of the stage, rather than the majestic deep sets we are used to. The relationships are different too; Raoul and Christine don't have much tenderness toward each other, leading one to suspect the producers are changing their chemistry to set up the potential Broadway arrival of that London bomb Love Never Dies, the sequel where their marriage is on the rocks. In addition, this younger Phantom with his floppy hair and awkward hand movements, lacks the gravitas and sexuality necessary to justify Christine's fascination with him, especially after he treats her more roughly than in previous productions. The singing voices are good, and the theater managers do well with their parts, but overall this production is "Phantom light" played for more humor and less romanticism than originally demonstrated. The loss of iconic set pieces and climactic moments such as the chandelier's ascent at the end of the Prologue, don't help matters. If you are a Phantom novice, you will probably love it; if you are a veteran, you may want to save your money and simply watch the 25th anniversary DVD again.

  • Some kinks in the show

by Phantomismyfav on 1/24/14Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

It was fantastic! Singing was awesome and choregraphy was good considering the small stage.. The one big disappointment was that they were lip syncing The Phantom of the Opera song when the Phantom takes Christine to his dungeon. That was disappointing. Otherwise the singing was incredible! The Phantom acted the last scene perfectly! A couple of times the volume was not quite right---so you couldn't hear exactly what someone was saying because the mic wasn't on or they weren't singing into the mic or loud enough. Overall we loved the show. The only reason we didn't give it a 5 star rating was the lip syncing.

I just saw this on the 18th I am a Huge fan of this play and always have been if your looking for what used to be ( the play in 1998) or something significant to the 2004 movie then you will be disappointed there are many new scenes that still tell the story. some scenes do feel as if your not watching the Phantom of the Opera, and they feel misplaced, but then it goes back to the old storyline. I can say when you had 5+ people singing all different things it was easy to get lost…. it was a sound mess! the props, special effects and scenes where great! definitely something you need to go into with an open mind. When seeing this play back in 1998 and comparing it to today’s I would have much rather watched what I saw back then, As to what I saw today. again having an open mind will help with the transitions of the new added scenes.

  • Phantom Extraordinaire

by HiPatricia on 1/23/14Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

This was a beautiful, engrossing, captivating Phantom production. The players are excellent - one of the best Phantoms I've seen - and a supporting cast to match. The staging, the scenery all so well done. There are some changes from the original - some new lyrics added here and there but the show maintains the integrity of the original. The audience delivered a standing ovation at the end for the cast and cheers went up for the Phantom. A top notch theatre experience.

  • Phantom of the Opera was as good as it gets!

    by tbt24680 on 1/23/14Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

We both loved the play. We saw this back in the late 80's/early 90's at the Auditorium Theater and fell in love with the whole premise. This version is very, very true to Weber's score and the live performance still sings in my head. The sounds were rich, full, and bursting with emotion. The stage was well done, especially the magically appearing steps from the upper stage door down to the phantom's boat. (straight from Indiana Jones?) Overall, we had an excellent view and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

This is an excellent production. We throughly enjoyed it. I did think that the Phantom was weak starting out in the first two scenes he appeared, but after that, he was very good.

Already a fan of the musical and book, the performance was spectacular. The actors were amazing and the effects add to the whole effect of the musical. I wish I could see it again. This is a definite must see while it's here!

  • Really exceptional

    by Dcc1 on 1/22/14Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

This was the third time that I've seen Phantom, and the best. Wonderful sets, the same beautiful music, and top notch performances. This show is a must see. I had forgotten just how fantastic it is. Although my 12 year old has been to several shows, this was his first major production, and it did not disappoint. The singing was extraordinary. If you've never seen Phantom, do yourself a favor and go. If you've seen it before....go again, you'll be glad you did! This version and cast is tremendous.
