Wish it were a five
by Phantomfan on 12/27/19Cadillac Palace - ChicagoOne of the greatest shows ever and it should be an easy five, but there were issues for me. Top pluses were the set, music and orchestra. The issues I had were that I felt it needed better lighting. The stage lighting is so dim at times you don’t see details of the set as much and you lose expression on faces, it’s hard to see and I was only 6 rows back. In one scene a spotlight came down on the graves while a moon was on the backdrop. The two were so far apart it broke the set. Spot from above, moon in the back? I also felt the mascarade number was rough due to some of the chorus actors not being as good as I think they should be for a broadway musical. Dancing was simple and definitely looked like a community theater show to me. I still loved it. But when you pay that sort of money, you expect something magical and different from the $40 local theater experience. For such a beloved show it needed improvement on those two awkward moments. On a last note the Cadillac theater is dated and rough. They need more bathrooms. It is not a building prepared for the volume of people it serves. Sadly. Even the men’s line for the restroom started upstairs and winded downstairs. Almost missed the second act opener because I was in line to use a bathroom still.
