THE BRILLIANT ORIGINAL RETURNS "MORE SPECTACULAR THAN EVER" - Sunday Express

The Phantom is back to thrill audiences once again! Cameron Mackintosh presents a revitalized new production of Andrew Lloyd Webber's legendary musical, THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, which was rapturously received by London critics when it reopened in 2021. Featuring Maria Björnson's brilliant original design and based on the celebrated direction of Harold Prince, with musical staging and choreography by Gillian Lynne, PHANTOM will launch a new multi-year North American tour in November 2025, premiering at the Cadillac Palace Theatre in Chicago December 11, 2025 - February 1, 2026.

THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA is widely considered one of the most beautiful and spectacular productions in history, playing to over 160 million people in 47 territories and 195 cities in 21 languages. Andrew Lloyd Webber's romantic, haunting, and soaring score includes "The Music of the Night," "All I Ask of You," "Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again," "Masquerade," and the iconic title song. It tells the tale of a disfigured musical genius known only as 'The Phantom' who haunts the depths of the Paris Opera House. Mesmerized by the talents and beauty of a young soprano, Christine, The Phantom lures her as his protégé and falls fiercely in love with her. Unaware of Christine's love for Raoul, The Phantom's obsession sets the scene for a dramatic turn of events where jealousy, madness, and passions collide.

  • Phantom was enjoyable.

Having seen Phantom at The Venetian in Las Vegas, I've been spoiled by glitz. I will say, however, that Cooper Grodin has a much better voice than Anthony Crivello who played the Phantom in the Las Vegas production. Sorry, Anthony! The sets and special effects in the Chicago production are on a MUCH smaller scale than the Las Vegas production, but still, it doesn't take too much away from one's enjoyment. The music is the star. I had a hard time understanding the words being sung due to the sound system or high-pitched shrill of the women's voices.

  • Great birthday present!!

Took my 25 year old daughter for first time. It was awesome. The new staging is incredible; costumes beautiful; and the voices were the best! That first solo had every hair on my body standing up. Just loved it! If you've gone in the past, go again!

Horribly boring. We left at the intermission. First time ever doing that!

  • Gorgeous music - new spectacular set & darker tone

The latest tour of Phantom is wonderful! I've been a fan over 25 years and still can't get enough. I've seen the original set/production come thru Chicago twice before. This version definitely left me with a different feeling. The sets are unbelievable - they completely draw you into the show. You feel more a part of the Paris Opera House. There were a couple snags with the safety harnesses with a slight break the show's rhythm - unless you're watching for it I don't know that it was notable. The journey to the Phantom's lair is magical and mystical. The back stage area of the Opera House is cleverly depicted. Brilliant! The vocals were outstanding. Compared to earlier reviews of this same tour the actors have matured into their roles. What caught me most by surprise was the overall tone of the show. I'd expected some slight changes. I didn't expect a Phantom unwilling to accept a rejectful Christine, a slightly more violent version. I didn't expect Christine to cling to Raoul less from love and more out of fear - needing someone to protect her. Rather than a life of darkness with an angel she'd grown to love versus daylight with a once-upon-a-summer childhood friend, she sought to decide between the better of two poor choices. Seeing her contemplate suicide (jumping to her death) just before "All I Ask of You" was an unexpected look into her heart. Watching the Phantom shove her to the ground in the scene following "Music of the Night" shocked me. Again - a magnificent production - just not the love tryst and heartache I expected to find in Christine's character. This all being said, Christine's innocence was brilliantly captured - I could relate to the young woman who continued to take lessons from a mysterious voice and willingly left her dressing room with him. Carlotta and Piangi were as delightfully funny as always. The vocals surpass all those I'd heard previously. Madame Giry and Meg were well done. The friendship between Meg and Christine didn't stand out as strongly as I've seen portrayed in other renditions; here the relationship between mother and daughter took precedence, though I never understood if this was intentional. There was some trouble with the audio quality during Masquerade and Prima Donna; songs with multiple vocal layers were hard to discern distinct voices. Still, delightful nonetheless. Overall - an absolutely magnificent journey and one I'd happily take again. For Phantom lovers, those who haven't experienced and those who think they have (and think they don't like it) - this is a version all should see. Delightfully brilliant - I thank the cast and crew for this wonderful experience.

My wife and I took in the performance and made a weekend of it in downtown Chicago. This was definitely the highlight of the weekend. I bought the tickets as a Christmas gift for my wife but it turned out to be a great gift for me as well.

Staging, talent and story combine to make the Phantom worth every penny you think you should save for that boring old dishwasher repair. GO SEE IT NOW!

  • Staging was unbelievable!

by YoungestFan on 2/4/14Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

For the first theater experience for a 7 year old girl, and only the second for a 9 year old boy and 10 year old boy, something loudly resonated from the stage to the point that they each sobbed from the story line and precision of the acting. For the three young attendees to be in such a buzz at intermission of their empathy for the Phantom and the excitement that they each held for the second half to find the outcome, it was well worth the money spent.

Beautiful voices; interesting scenery design. Phantom's voice in the lower range was weak but very powerful in the more forceful sections of his songs.

The plays presentation was really terrific. It was so imaginative and adaptive to the theaters it will play in. The cast was terrific and the presentation was very good. The cast really produced a great rendition. The voices rich and distinct. This play should be seen. I have seen several Phantoms and this one does not disappoint. This rendition should be seen.

  • New Phantom Production lacked Romance!

by MYKINDOFTOWN on 2/4/14Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 1 out of 5

Go see the original not this production! The Phantom acted like Beetlejuice and Raoul was more of a wild man! It is sad that this production turns the romance into enragement!

  • B E A U T I F U L...Phantom was great!

More beautiful than I had remembered. All my friends had an amazing memorable time.

  • It's all about the music.

    by SPG50 on 2/4/14Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 3 out of 5

Let me preface this review by saying that I've seen Phantom 5 times previously. As my title says, the show is all about the music at this production hit the mark. The voices were outstanding in every dimension when speaking or singing. The orchestra was well balanced and complimented the vocals quite well. Why do I only rate it only 3 stars then? That is because this new production is done (at least in Chicago) on a small stage which forced a set redesign. Now for making use of the limited stage area I have to give the set designer and director due credit for imagination but here are my issues. First, from the the dress circle seats (which are usually some of the best in the theater) most of the shows action on the 2nd level of the set can NOT be seen because the balcony floor cuts off the sight line. Additionally the "chandelier" could never be seen either. The small stage basically cut the catacomb boat scenes to barely usable snippets. At the part where the stage hand gets hung, in this production you what it "kind of happen" as he somehow gets pulled from the floor up. I like he surprise value from the previous productions when you don't see it. They've also added some pyrotechnics and flash pots which didn't fit right. The scene when the chandelier comes crashing down just didn't look as dramatic either. It's still a wonderful show but the small stage ruined it for me. This is a production that requires a large venue to bring the story to it's full potential.
