THE BRILLIANT ORIGINAL RETURNS "MORE SPECTACULAR THAN EVER" - Sunday Express

The Phantom is back to thrill audiences once again! Cameron Mackintosh presents a revitalized new production of Andrew Lloyd Webber's legendary musical, THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, which was rapturously received by London critics when it reopened in 2021. Featuring Maria Björnson's brilliant original design and based on the celebrated direction of Harold Prince, with musical staging and choreography by Gillian Lynne, PHANTOM will launch a new multi-year North American tour in November 2025, premiering at the Cadillac Palace Theatre in Chicago December 11, 2025 - February 1, 2026.

THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA is widely considered one of the most beautiful and spectacular productions in history, playing to over 160 million people in 47 territories and 195 cities in 21 languages. Andrew Lloyd Webber's romantic, haunting, and soaring score includes "The Music of the Night," "All I Ask of You," "Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again," "Masquerade," and the iconic title song. It tells the tale of a disfigured musical genius known only as 'The Phantom' who haunts the depths of the Paris Opera House. Mesmerized by the talents and beauty of a young soprano, Christine, The Phantom lures her as his protégé and falls fiercely in love with her. Unaware of Christine's love for Raoul, The Phantom's obsession sets the scene for a dramatic turn of events where jealousy, madness, and passions collide.

After returning home we reviewed the original cast recording and are sorry to report that this was the worst by far of the four productions of the Phantom we have experienced. Christine and the Phantom in this production are very weak. Raoul was acceptable. The orchestra did well. Chorus was weak and hard to understand because voices were not in synch.

I have seen numerous Broadway productions and Phantom of the Opera has taken over the #1 spot. The sets, the actors, the singing and everything about it are just amazing. I highly recommend seeing it at least once, even if opera isn't your preference.

  • Phantom of the Opera - amazing cast!

I saw Phantom 22 years ago at the Pantages Theatre in Toronto - a little has changed since, but it is still spectacular. The performers were awesome. There was one little glitch with a pyrotechnic display which almost caused the Phantom's cape to catch afire, but the crisis was averted. Great show!!

Fantastic show. You won't be dissappointed. Top notch performance! Would've loved to see the chandalier crash onto the stage (it only lowers & flashes) but everything else was great. I'm not a live theatre regular, (my wife is) but I was thoroughly entertained the entire time. This makes going to the movies seem lame!

We first saw Phantom of the Opera 23 years ago in Chicago and thought it was amazing! But the performance on February 28, 2014 was over the top!! The special effects that were added made the musical outstanding! We enjoyed the set designs, costumes, special effects, and the singing was outstanding! We loved the musical so much! So glad we went again 23 years later!

  • First time attending the Phantom

by Buckhum on 3/3/14Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

Prior to this event, my sole opera experience only came from a Harvard group performance of Othello. Unfortunately, it was too next level for me and I could not understand anything and fell asleep for most of the time. And so, I became turned off from operas as I dread the prospect of sitting still for multiple hours while non understanding the performances. Needless to say, the Phantom at the Cadillac Palace really turned all of that around! Even though I recognize that the Phantom is bound to be more accessible to the masses than Othello (and more of a pop-entertainment as well), I must say that the quality of this Phantom performance is absolutely top notch. Whether it is the stage design, the beautiful voice of Christine (and the rest of the casts as well), or the impeccable coordination of all the actors, I am very pleased with all aspects of this show.

This was my fifth viewing of the Phantom and sadly my last. Carotta and Christine were extremely good while Raoul and the Phantom were a great disappontment. Several songs were way too up-tempo. I thought I was watching a TV show because there was no connection with the audiance outside of Christine, Madame Giry. There was no empathy created for the Phantom because there was no connection or chemistry between Christine and the Phantom. Both the Phantom and Raoul seemed to be angry men. Past the point of no return was cheesy. Masquerade was sad, the costumes and choreograhy was a step-down from the original and the Phantom's scene was blocked by the two managers and anti-climatic. What is with th Phantom laying Christine down on the bed while she is still awake and already having his mask off when she approaches after waking up? Are you kidding me? Lastly the singing: The Phantom was aweful and his best sound was his final note. Raoul sounded mad and choppy. Piangi did not have a strong enough voice for the part. The good - The set was decent, I loved the retracting stairs. Singing I give 5 stars to Christine, Giry, Buquet and Firmin. The Orchestra was great and the final scene where the Phantom vanishes is good, except again no connection with Christine's final appearance when she returns the ring, very sad and no empathy created for the Phantom. Andrew L Webber - I want my money back!
