THE BRILLIANT ORIGINAL RETURNS "MORE SPECTACULAR THAN EVER" - Sunday Express

The Phantom is back to thrill audiences once again! Cameron Mackintosh presents a revitalized new production of Andrew Lloyd Webber's legendary musical, THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, which was rapturously received by London critics when it reopened in 2021. Featuring Maria Björnson's brilliant original design and based on the celebrated direction of Harold Prince, with musical staging and choreography by Gillian Lynne, PHANTOM will launch a new multi-year North American tour in November 2025, premiering at the Cadillac Palace Theatre in Chicago December 11, 2025 - February 1, 2026.

THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA is widely considered one of the most beautiful and spectacular productions in history, playing to over 160 million people in 47 territories and 195 cities in 21 languages. Andrew Lloyd Webber's romantic, haunting, and soaring score includes "The Music of the Night," "All I Ask of You," "Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again," "Masquerade," and the iconic title song. It tells the tale of a disfigured musical genius known only as 'The Phantom' who haunts the depths of the Paris Opera House. Mesmerized by the talents and beauty of a young soprano, Christine, The Phantom lures her as his protégé and falls fiercely in love with her. Unaware of Christine's love for Raoul, The Phantom's obsession sets the scene for a dramatic turn of events where jealousy, madness, and passions collide.

I enjoy this opera each time I see it, however, this production was beautifully done with the magnificent costumes and the added humor. I thoroughly enjoyed myself. I would have preferred to be about 10 rows closer!

  • Unwelcomed Changes

by OTHERnicknamesTaken on 12/25/16Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

I adore the show and have watched 7 performances in 3 major cities since 1991. While I enjoyed the new structure that served as the stairway to the Phantom's lair, I certainly missed the original illusion of the slanted ramps leading downward. Also, a huge change I was not a fan of was the elimination of the Masquerade stairway. My teenage daughter was attending this performance with me as her first time and was disappointed with that also. Lastly, I expected a better chandelier crash. Overall, the cast did a superb job!!!! Kudos to the orchestra!!!

  • The Phantom met all expectations!

by KarenKuz on 12/25/16Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

Of all the shows I have seen in Chicago, The Phantom of the Opera was, by far, my favorite. It is so perfectly cast! The voices, the acting, the special effects, all of it was amazing and so perfectly put together. I couldn't have been more entertained!

Everything was great. The singing, the stage and the actors.

I have had the privilege of seeing this play numerous times in numerous City's and venues and have to admit I was disappointed with this current production. While the actors were very talented, there did not appear to be any chemistry between the parties. It seemed a bit stiff and mechanical. And as far as the staging goes, unfortunately this was sadly lacking. The opening auction scene when the chandelier was "illuminated" again was somewhat flat. In other productions the chandelier was on the stage and raised from there. Not so in this production. The opening scene in the second act was disappointing. Instead of the case descending a staircase they were all lined up several deep which significantly compromised the power of the song and the scene. The same thing was true of the cemetery scene where Christine is singing to her father and the phantom appears to comfort her. In every other production I have seen her father in interred in a mausoleum and when the phantom appears he makes his appearance atop the mausoleum, again what should ave been a very powerful scene was average. This was billed as a stunning, intense and spectacular production, which had that potential, but unfortunately was average.

  • Phantom of the Opera

This is the first opera I have been to and it was amazing. I am going to have to take my wife to some more of them if they were only cheaper.

  • Perfection

The show exceeded my expectations. There is not a single thing I would change. Brilliant.

  • Phantom = Great Music

    by Jeff0616 on 12/25/16Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

Intonation was pitch-perfect. Enunciation was spotty. Characterizations were spotty. Reactions started weak, but picked up. Pit was awesome. Plot development was clearly secondary; it incorrectly assumes everyone knows it. I still recommend it-study the plot before going...enjoy~~~Jeff

  • Phantom of the Opera was awesome!!!! Highly recomm

Excellent play, very good production. Highly recommend.

  • Good show, but too loud

by NBdiner on 12/24/16Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 3 out of 5

Excellent and creative sets, some spectacular visual effects. Performers, music and songs were very good. However, they had the volume amped up way too loud (my ears were ringing). Yeah, I'm old, but you really don't have to boost the sound up when the singers are so good.

  • Big Fan of Phantom

by Motherkoch on 12/24/16Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 3 out of 5

My husband and I are big fans of Phantom. We have seen it probably 7 times. Normally I get chills during this show in many different scenes. Not one goosebump at all with this production. I did not like the many scenes that seem condensed, Christine and Raul seemed to have no connection, very disappointed in the ending instead of using the vanishing chair, Phantom vanished in a very disappointing and obvious way to me. This play seems to be made on the "cheap". There was no big elephant (instead just a movable "cardboard" cutout), no grand staircase for masquerade, the chandelier was just a drop down version with no swinging and swaying. The whole show was very disappointing. My son and his girlfriend went the day after and then we compared notes and they were disappointed as well.

  • THE PHANTOM

    by Retired07 on 12/24/16Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

We must have seen this play a dozen times. The great think about a live show is that it is different than the ones you seen earlier or the ones you will see. This is a very good production. Thought the Phantom had the voice and jesters to be the Phantom. Christina was very good. We thought Carlotta was exceptional. Thought the revisions were good. Glad we went.

  • Great actors, good staging, slight variations

by Jeslpb on 12/24/16Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

great actors. Phantom was amazing. Staging was interesting and quite good. Chandelier was gorgeous but movement was a little disappointing. Many very small changes to original that in some ways were better (made the story more clear or stronger), but some changes I did not like (anticlimactic unmasking of the phantom way too early in the show when typically Christine is shown a vision of herself in a wedding dress and faints instead). Love story between both Christine and phantom was a little weak.

  • Very good... but not amazing

by AudreyForeman on 12/24/16Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

overall the production was very good. There were a few things that were better and worse than the middle road. The sets were very good. The singing though good was not amazing. You could tell they were holding back because they were going to be doing this everyday for a while. The costumes were bland except for the diva and the ballerinas. The only make up worth mentioning is the french revolution comedy. That was amazing. The phantom was very good though not amazing. The lead female was adequate but not amazing. She seemed to have been told by the director not to try too hard.

  • 3rd time is best

by Saddlewood on 12/23/16Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

This was my third time seeing The Phantom. Was the best yet for two reasons: special effects were spectacular and I could understand all the words that were being sung! Acting and singing were great!

  • I am in awe...

by pakitkat on 12/23/16Cadillac Palace - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

I have seen the movie. I went to the play in New York. I even saw it here in Chicago a few years ago. That production just blew me away. However this production was the best I've ever viewed. The special effects were shocking! When the Phantom threw a hissy fit, the fire displays conveyed his anger and emotion superbly. I felt powerful emotions for the Phantom. Then Christine, in her innocence and strength of voice, had me hoping there would be a solution. Alas, the outcome is always the same and I guess I wouldn't want it any other way. The music is seared into my brain. It'll be there for quite a while. Loved ti.
