The Office! A Musical Parody

The beloved mockumentary reaches a new level of laughs with The Office! A Musical Parody. Fans of the television series will be happy to know that all their favorite characters are on board, as are some key plot elements. When the original British version of The Office premiered in 2001, it brought something completely new to television comedy. Sure, sitcoms had lampooned office culture before, but never with the cringe-inducing level of awkwardness that creators Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant allowed their characters to display. Then the American Office became an enormous hit series -- and a comedy landmark. In the hands of writers Bob and Tobly McSmith, the stage version adds an unexpected tuneful touch that takes things to another place entirely, and the outrageousness lives on.

The Office! A Musical Parody History

The British send-up of dysfunctional workplace life that was broadcast on BBC from 2001 through 2003 became such a success in America that it couldn't help but inspire a US version. Premiering in 2005, the American Office, starring Steve Carell, lasted for an amazing nine seasons. When Bob and Tobly McSmith took the stateside sitcom series and created a theatrical version, the pair had already let their satirical minds loose on musical takeoffs of everything from Friends to Full House, so by the time they tackled The Office, they were fully primed. But this is far from just a stage re-creation. As a musical parody, the production mines the medium for even more comic gold -- and gives you something to hum on the way home. Whether you're a die-hard fan of the series or getting introduced to the characters for the first time, The Office! A Musical Parody will prove that however insane your own workplace may seem to you, it's comparatively a whole lot more normal than you may think.

    The Office: A musical parody

by Maria GT on 10/1/19The Theater Center - New York

We took our teenage sons to see this as they both are fans of the show. It was fun and I give all of the actors credit for playing multiple parts. Michael (who is actually played by a female) did a GREAT job capturing his humor and mannerisms. Just be aware that this is an OFF broadway show-very small theatre and low budget set.

Took my daughter, who is a huge Office fan, for her birthday and we both loved it. Honored the show in their own hilarious and entertaining way.

I am not a fan of musicals, but my daughter is and we are huge Office fans! I was so impressed with the comedy and references to the funniest skits! It was a great time and we laughed all night!

Overall it was quite fun with enough references to the show

by O. P. on 9/25/19The Theater Center - New York

The show suits only super-fans that know all the small details from TV. It's not a LOL show but a play that knows the bits and bites of the series and indeed makes you smile. Despite that in some stages it is not in chronological order it's still enjoyable with a lot of cool references and take offs from the show. The entire flow could be better but overall it was fun! I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who watched the show occasionally though.

    Fantastic!

As a casual fan of the office, I loved the whole thing. Great meta-commentary about the show itself and the actress that played Michael Scott killed it.

    Rainy Sunday

by Tom S. on 8/21/19The Theater Center - New York

Great show. Jim/Andy was incredible in both roles. Lots of laughs and the location was great. Only wish some of the lewd ref was left out. Maybe little uncomfortable with 13 year old daughter. Other then that the show was awesome.

    loved The show

by d. D. on 8/20/19The Theater Center - New York

Very funny, so many references from the office, hit all our abortive things. It was a little more “sexual references” than I would have anticipated which I wish I knew before bringing my 14 year old. But my 19 year old is going back this week with his friend, it was great! Actors and writing were amazing!

A must see for Office fans!

    by Jen on 8/8/19

This musical covers every hilarious moment of The Office from all 9 seasons. I absolutely loved the music, and how they condensed every primary storyline into a 2 hour show. Favorite song was "Marry Me Beesly" and Andy's solo. Spot on mannerisms of the characters from the original TV show. My friends and I had a wonderful time... You can even get a "Meredith" drink at the bar! (Hilarious) Definitely a must see for any fan of The Office!

    Awesome!

by E. on 8/8/19The Theater Center - New York

In addition to fun for someone who loves The Office, the cast was great as was the screenplay, and set design. They were great signers and actors, and it was a really well put together show! I remember from seeing other TV satires that there was live music, which I did miss. But otherwise excellent!

    The worst

by M. B. on 8/6/19The Theater Center - New York

Let me start by saying my husband and I are the biggest office fans!!!!!! We were so excited to see this Parody and it was a HUGE let down. At best it feels like a high school production. The jokes are racial and not the original office jokes. The parody adds things that were NOT on the show and makes it even worse. A lady next to me ask to speak to the manager and i overheard her say it’s the worse show she’s ever seen. My husband offered to pay me $50 if we left during intermission. Don’t waste your money. Yes they have jokes from the original show but do yourself a favor and watch the reruns on Netflix!!! It’s HORRIBLE

Very funny if you like The Office

by P. F. on 8/6/19The Theater Center - New York

The jokes were classic Office. The songs themselves were fine but nothing you would leave the theater singing. The mannerisms for Jim, Pam, Dwight and Andy were spot on. If you are the kind of person that just watches The Office on Netflix everyday you will enjoy it.

    Amused, but Disappointed

by Steven A on 7/30/19The Theater Center - New York

First, it’s in a great location. The orbach theatre is small, but right on Broadway in Times Square. Second, some of the cast is amazing. Most wear multiple hats, and pull it off in a comical way. The Jim and Dwight characters have the original actors mannerisms down so very well. Angela’s voice is terrific (as is many others). Their comic timing is impeccable-and the chemistry seems good. Unfortunately, it’s not enough to carry the show. The writing and songs were just not good. The plot is an 80s mixtape of some of the best scenes from the Office, but done poorly, and a complete overdo of the raunchiest parts of the show. A handful of great actors (And Dwight, Jim, and Angela and the Kevin/Phyllis/Meredith actors/actresses are really good) carry the otherwise mediocre show. For me, worst show I’ve seen in NY, in a rundown theater, making talented people manage through a subpar script and score.

A great show for The Office fans!

by Linda on 7/24/19The Theater Center - New York

The theater was small, so everyone had great seats. The actors had perfected the mannerisms of The Office characters. The audience was smiling and laughing throughout the show. It’s been a while since I watched The Office, but I still understood the majority of references. My daughter is a huge Office fan and has seen all the episodes multiple times. She thoroughly enjoyed the show and mentioned that she’d love to see it again.
