The Office! A Musical Parody

The beloved mockumentary reaches a new level of laughs with The Office! A Musical Parody. Fans of the television series will be happy to know that all their favorite characters are on board, as are some key plot elements. When the original British version of The Office premiered in 2001, it brought something completely new to television comedy. Sure, sitcoms had lampooned office culture before, but never with the cringe-inducing level of awkwardness that creators Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant allowed their characters to display. Then the American Office became an enormous hit series -- and a comedy landmark. In the hands of writers Bob and Tobly McSmith, the stage version adds an unexpected tuneful touch that takes things to another place entirely, and the outrageousness lives on.

The Office! A Musical Parody History

The British send-up of dysfunctional workplace life that was broadcast on BBC from 2001 through 2003 became such a success in America that it couldn't help but inspire a US version. Premiering in 2005, the American Office, starring Steve Carell, lasted for an amazing nine seasons. When Bob and Tobly McSmith took the stateside sitcom series and created a theatrical version, the pair had already let their satirical minds loose on musical takeoffs of everything from Friends to Full House, so by the time they tackled The Office, they were fully primed. But this is far from just a stage re-creation. As a musical parody, the production mines the medium for even more comic gold -- and gives you something to hum on the way home. Whether you're a die-hard fan of the series or getting introduced to the characters for the first time, The Office! A Musical Parody will prove that however insane your own workplace may seem to you, it's comparatively a whole lot more normal than you may think.

    Good and bad

by Ken on 10/23/19Hackensack Meridian Health Theatre at the Count Basie Center - Red Bank

This waa my first time at Count Basie Theater. As far as the tgeater it had a nice classic look and where I was seated the seat was comfortable and was good for view and sound. Parking is very hard to find there and bathrooms are pretty tiny Now on to "The Office the musical". The show was pretty good. Some actors was very good and somw were so so. I think the actors who played Dwight, Angela and Kelly nailed it. Kevin was also pretty good. Toby and Creed were disappointing, not enough of them. Was not impressed with Ryan. Hated the accent they made Karen use the whole time. The show tried to put as much of the series as possible although they took a lot of liberties and they were not in order.

    We walked out after 20minutes

by DeeBee on 10/23/19Hackensack Meridian Health Theatre at the Count Basie Center - Red Bank

Not our kind of humor. We are true fans of The Office - both UK and American versions... have seen every episode multiple times. This play was not witty and was truly boring. We came to the conclusion that parodies of dramas can be sensational, eg, ‘Silence’ the parody of The Silence of The Lambs, whereas parodies of comedies, eg, The Office, are extremely difficult to pull off since true underlying show is already funny. Don’t waste your time or money on this one!

    Weird

by Brendan on 10/23/19Hackensack Meridian Health Theatre at the Count Basie Center - Red Bank

I laughed sometimes but ultimately left shortly after the first intermission. All of the people I know that went to this have said the same thing: it was weird. We all wanted this to be great but found it to be underwhelmingly strange.

    Poorly Written Show

by KM on 10/23/19Hackensack Meridian Health Theatre at the Count Basie Center - Red Bank

We left at intermission it was that bad. The writing of the show was not good and it was cast oddly with many women playing male roles. Not worth the time or money.

If you watched the office, seeee this!

by Paige S. on 10/15/19The Theater Center - New York

If you have not seen the office it would be good, if you have seen the office and like the show than this will be something not to miss. I mean common Dwight in a musical!? It is awkward, entertaining, and creative!

    Truly awful

    by R. on 10/15/19State Theatre - Portland

I would have left at intermission, but that felt too rude. I don't think I have ever been to a worse show. Way too campy ; too much reference to material and jokes outside the scope of the "Office" ; not a very professional production. Fell way below my expectations.

    Such a fun show!

by S. H. on 10/15/19The Theater Center - New York

This show does a great job of covering the highlights, characters, and themes of the 10 seasons of The Office in 2 hours. The team, through an amazing array of costume and character changes, presents a witty and entertaining show. Lots of good humor, and strong vocal talent.

    Worst show I’ve ever seen

by Pezzy on 10/13/19State Theatre - Portland

I am a huge fan of the Office but this show was a disaster. Odd casting (lots of male characters played by women), juvenile direction and an unimaginative script that was nothing more than classic office lines strung together. Would have been ok for a Junior High School performance. Hubby and I walked out after 30 minutes and saw others doing the same. Huge waste of money.

    by S. W. on 10/13/19State Theatre - Portland

I’m no fan of musicals but this show was so funny that the singing and dancing added to the comedy. All the cast characters were represented. Michael was awesome!

    Great, over-the-top parody!

by B. on 10/9/19The Theater Center - New York

Even if you haven't followed "The Office", you'll love this parody of the stylized, 80s-90's comedy of the working world. Like a Dilbert on steroids, it's great!

    Great Musical Interpretation

by Evie918 on 10/8/19The Theater Center - New York

Great acting. Fantastic actors. Felt as if watching a compilation of the entire seasons in one big musical production. Oh wait, that is what I saw. Definitely must go and see for yourself. You will love and enjoy just as I did.

    Office Parody

by TC on 10/7/19Scranton Cultural Center - Scranton

My past experience with a parody set the stage for The Office, and it did not live up to my expectations. I saw a Harry Potter parody once and it was so funny my face hurt from laughing. The Office parody did not reach me the same way. First off, I didn’t know it was a Musical, it wasn’t very funny because the jokes were all done before on the actual show. I did think the actors were talented, especially the Jim character and they all had beautiful voices and brava for the quick costume changes. I did not like a female in the role of Michael Scott. His sexist jokes didn’t make sense from a female playing the role. To really parody the show, the female boss should have been portrayed as a female and she should have been sexist towards the men in a way Michael Scott would have done. That would have been funny. I wanted to like it. I wanted them to really play up the fact that we were in Scranton, and mention things that only Scranton ppl would get, however how hard I tried, I Just did not enjoy it. Bummer.

This show was fantastic! As a huge Office fan, this show gave me everything I wanted and more! It has all the characters you love and love to hate, with all of your favorite lines! The songs are cleverly written and have the theme song interwoven into them, the characters are so funny and feel like the ones you’ve loved to watch over and over again on tv! If you can see this show please go!!!

by David B on 10/2/19The Theater Center - New York

The show was great. On top of that, everyone involved put on a wonderful show, and we were lucky enough to be able to meet them afterward. They were all friendly and charming and I look forward to seeing them in future productions!
