About

The Lonely Island on Tour

Though The Lonely Island exploded into pop culture in 2005, it took the music and comedy trio 14 years — plus seven Saturday Night Live seasons, three uproarious LPs, and two movies — to get around to touring. Chalk that up to the successful careers of actor-writer-producers Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer, and Jorma Taccone, who have as a group been nominated for multiple Grammys, an Oscar, and a Creative Arts Emmy (which they won).

They earned all that by writing and performing such absurd yet undeniable rap anthems as "Dick in a Box" (featuring Justin Timberlake), "Lazy Sunday" (about going to see a Chronicles of Narnia movie), and "I Just Had Sex," in which autotune hook-master Akon coos those titular words with believable enthusiasm.

That they hadn't previously taken that act on the road is equally silly when you consider their talent and chemistry, honed over decades of friendship and collaborative work, not to mention their love of performance, props, ridiculous outfits, and surprising guest cameos. To wit, a 2018 warm-up show featured Michael Bolton in a pirate hat, singing along to "Jack Sparrow."

The Lonely Island Background

Friends since their junior high days in Berkeley, California, the three men who make up The Lonely Island moved into a cheap Los Angeles apartment in 2000 with plans to work in film. Between dead-end gigs, they managed to become pioneers in sharing comedic video shorts online and stumbled upon their true gift while recording joke rap songs with their musician roommate after-hours.

In 2005, the guys parlayed budding Internet stardom into a writing gig for the MTV Movie Awards and, as a result, a role on SNL where they'd head up their own Digital Shorts department.

Their run on the show was legendary, expanding SNL's reach into both viral clips and radio hits, while The Lonely Island created a series of star-studded music videos and LPs — from 2009's Incredibad (featuring T-Pain, Natalie Portman, and Jack Black, among others), to 2011's Turtleneck & Chain (Nicki Minaj, Snoop Dogg, Lady Gaga), to 2013's The Wack Album (Pharrell Williams, Kendrick Lamar, Hugh Jackman). The Lonely Island also eventually made it to Hollywood with 2016's Judd Apatow–produced mockumentary Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, which poked fun at the music industry they unwittingly found themselves within.

    Pretty Awesome

by Dross on 7/2/19Armory - Minneapolis

The Lonely Island gave an amazing performance - the skits were hilarious, the singing was great, and their stage presence overall was fantastic. These guys are great performers. Only regret is that I had a flat tire waiting for me after I got done, which put a damper on things, but what can you do?

The Armory is a horrible place with great shows

    by Guy #2 on 7/2/19Armory - Minneapolis

Crowds are always too big with horrible visibility if you aren't on the rail. Getting in to the venue was a mess with people who just got there getting in ahead of people who waited all day. I didn't see anyone get taken away by EMS this time but considering how full it was and it has happened at every other show at the armory I'm guessing I just didn't see it.

    Amazing show! Awesome venue!

    by Sarina W. on 7/2/19Armory - Minneapolis

This show was so fun!!! I’m a huge SNL fan so it was awesome to hear some digital short songs live! It was comedy/music and I loved it! Plus we got special guests! The Armory is also a cool venue! Holds ALOT of people. We did the underground parking for $20 and we didn’t have to wait in the long general admission line but instead went up the elevator and they let us in through that door.. so we arrived to the show 30 minutes before (compared to others who waited for hours..) and got some of the best seats in the house! If you love TLI (they also did songs from Popstar the movie!) - highly recommended if they do another tour ever.

    Best. Concert. Ever.

    by Jay7694 on 7/2/19Armory - Minneapolis

I first heard about The Lonely Island with my friends in 2009 and we became obsessed. Incredibad got us through a pretty rough year. We all really wanted to see them but unfortunately they weren't touring at that time. Fast forward 10 years, they announced their first multi-city tour, and we immediately jumped on the opportunity to see them. We went to the last show that was on 6/29 and loved every second of it! It brought back so many memories, we also made new ones, and I would've paid double for a ticket that's how fun the show was. If you love The Lonely Island, you've never seen them (Or you have, doesn't matter!) and they tour again, you absolutely have to go! I plan to because they're worth every penny! Thanks for fun and the laughter! :)

    Great concert

by Sam on 7/2/19Armory - Minneapolis

The concert itself was amazing, especially if you knew their songs well enough to sing along to parts. The reason I am only giving 4 stars though is because The Lonely Island came on stage over an hour after the listed start time. The vast majority of the time waiting there was nothing going on on stage. While I understand delays happen and this is a big event so a lot can go wrong, anytime past half an hour seems unreasonable to me.

    1st tour best tour

by Stella on 7/2/19Armory - Minneapolis

Besides the fact I'm short and it was very hard to see the stage (and not everything was on the big screen) they put on a great show!! It was too short - I didn't want it to end - but they sang all my favorites. I will go again next time they go on tour!

Literally the best concert I've ever been to, worth the wait

    by Nick C on 7/2/19Armory - Minneapolis

The venue was great, it was basically like a huge dome with a bar that circled the entire venue so getting a drink was easy, there were barely ever lines. Also the bathrooms were huge with actual capacity for a huge concert. Then the Lonely Island, they did not disappoint. I've loved their music since I first saw Lazy Sunday on SNL. I always said half of the fun of their music was the video that went with it so I was a little worried if a live concert would do them justice, but OMG it did. They did many costume changes to their iconic characters, they had props and a huge video screen that when appropriate played clips from their videos and a lot of new stuff too. All the camios in their songs were obviously recordings as no one expected everyone to show up, but it was seamless, you couldn't tell. They really did their homework on how to present their content in a live show and my only hope is they do it again!

    A+, 100%

by tjades on 7/2/19Armory - Minneapolis

Seeing the Lonely Island in concert was an excellent way to spend my time. Between the nostalgic songs, upbeat rhythms, and the three artists just having fun I will 100% make the choice to go to another concert of theirs in the future. As for the venue, I don’t think a better venue could have been chosen, the Armory is a beautiful, historic, building, and I wish every venue was laid out like this. The bars all around GA make it extremely easy, and quick to get another drink. All around fantastic experience.

    LOVED IT!

    by M. S. on 7/1/19Fox Theatre Detroit - Detroit

I was lucky enough to get my hands on a verified fan pre-sale code and nailed down seats in the second row, so the experience was already beyond. But the boys did all the classics (including a few that were a little more unexpected), their energy was amazing and infectious, and the multi-media effects were pretty awesome. This is the second time I've been to Fox Theatre and it's a beautiful, old space - the show was sold out, so there were plenty of lines for the bathrooms and bars, but they move pretty effectively. My only complaint was the setup of the swag booth - it was a madhouse with absolutely no organization (maybe setting up some actual lines would be helpful instead of letting everyone mob in and cut in front of each other the whole time?), and it was set up right in the middle of the lobby where it was difficult to get around even if you weren't buying anything. But mostly...they ran out of the specialized Detroit posters ridiculously fast - unless you're trying to set them up to be incredibly valuable in the future, why wouldn't you just make more? Despite that small glitch, it was an incredible night and I'd absolutely go see TLI again.

Noticeable First Tour - Good, But Could Be Better

    by E. B. on 7/1/19Fox Theatre Detroit - Detroit

Things I loved: the video visuals, the energy in the room, the energy the guys had, the choreography, the skits. Things I didn't love: the length of the show (really on the too short side), the fact that a number of really great songs were smashed into 20-30 second bits in medleys, the fact that they used the recording for Finest Girl instead of singing it live like all the other songs (weird, and totally noticeable). Over all, I enjoyed the show, but I think it was obvious that it was their first time touring, and I feel like there were a few kinks that hopefully will get worked out before their next tour - which I will 100% be at, so TOUR AGAIN SOON YO.
