About

The Lonely Island on Tour

Though The Lonely Island exploded into pop culture in 2005, it took the music and comedy trio 14 years — plus seven Saturday Night Live seasons, three uproarious LPs, and two movies — to get around to touring. Chalk that up to the successful careers of actor-writer-producers Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer, and Jorma Taccone, who have as a group been nominated for multiple Grammys, an Oscar, and a Creative Arts Emmy (which they won).

They earned all that by writing and performing such absurd yet undeniable rap anthems as "Dick in a Box" (featuring Justin Timberlake), "Lazy Sunday" (about going to see a Chronicles of Narnia movie), and "I Just Had Sex," in which autotune hook-master Akon coos those titular words with believable enthusiasm.

That they hadn't previously taken that act on the road is equally silly when you consider their talent and chemistry, honed over decades of friendship and collaborative work, not to mention their love of performance, props, ridiculous outfits, and surprising guest cameos. To wit, a 2018 warm-up show featured Michael Bolton in a pirate hat, singing along to "Jack Sparrow."

The Lonely Island Background

Friends since their junior high days in Berkeley, California, the three men who make up The Lonely Island moved into a cheap Los Angeles apartment in 2000 with plans to work in film. Between dead-end gigs, they managed to become pioneers in sharing comedic video shorts online and stumbled upon their true gift while recording joke rap songs with their musician roommate after-hours.

In 2005, the guys parlayed budding Internet stardom into a writing gig for the MTV Movie Awards and, as a result, a role on SNL where they'd head up their own Digital Shorts department.

Their run on the show was legendary, expanding SNL's reach into both viral clips and radio hits, while The Lonely Island created a series of star-studded music videos and LPs — from 2009's Incredibad (featuring T-Pain, Natalie Portman, and Jack Black, among others), to 2011's Turtleneck & Chain (Nicki Minaj, Snoop Dogg, Lady Gaga), to 2013's The Wack Album (Pharrell Williams, Kendrick Lamar, Hugh Jackman). The Lonely Island also eventually made it to Hollywood with 2016's Judd Apatow–produced mockumentary Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, which poked fun at the music industry they unwittingly found themselves within.

One of the best shows I’ve ever been to

by C. on 6/24/19The Rooftop at Pier 17 - New York

Had the most amazing time. The venue was A+ and TLI put on a show like no other. They did all the hits plus the new stuff and included some truly hilarious sketches/comedy bits in between. The most fun I’ve had in a long time, hope these guys decide to tour again very soon!

    INCREDIBLE

    by M. D. on 6/24/19The Rooftop at Pier 17 - New York

Easily one of the best shows I've ever been to. Lonely Island was the only concert I've ever been to where I had a huge smile on my face for the entirety of the set, can't wait to see them tour again.

    Everything is awesome!

by Kitty on 6/24/19The Rooftop at Pier 17 - New York

This was my very first concert. I am glad I choose them. They've been my all time favorite. Funny all around. Knowing that I am short, I had a great view from the green zone. I loved that the green zone had its own bar. It felt more VIP. It made a big difference in having to wait in line for drinks vs the regular line. I had bought a "Happy Birthday to ground" which I found cute. I wish they had more merch for women. I am also hoping if they do another tour they would include like a VIP package : exclusive merch and photo op. Overall for being their first tour it was super fun! Worth it!

    Once in a lifetime experience

by Feqqr on 6/24/19The Rooftop at Pier 17 - New York

The Lonely Island delivered an utterly incredible fan experience. Absolutely loved the music, the skits and the guests. The audience was singing along all night. Only complaint was the opening act was terrible.

Lonely Island is a great Getaway.

by Jane on 6/23/19The Met Philadelphia - Philadelphia

I took my daughter who introduced me to Lonely Island a few years ago. I had a fantastic time and she said it was the absolute best concert she ever went to. The comedy, songs, and IT effects were amazing and created an all-around fantastic show. I would love to just hang out with the 3 guys to see how their minds work. I highly recommend this show. My daughter would love to follow them on tour if she could. BTW I think I was the oldest person in the audience but I didn't care. Love the songs!!!!!!

Truly the best night of my life

by Karlyn on 6/22/19The Met Philadelphia - Philadelphia

The Lonely Island has played such a huge role in my life; I discovered them (and SNL) at a time in life where I was severely depressed and suicidal. They were the first true source of joy and happiness I had experienced in months; I have no doubt that because of this they saved my life. They taught me that life doesn’t have to be so dark all the time. Being able to see Andy, Jorma, and Akiva perform was so incredibly surreal. It reminded me why I’m still alive. It reminded me that there is always joy to be found in life, and for that I am extremely grateful.

So glad to finally see them in person. Wish it was a little longer than 1 hour. Especially for the price paid.

    Awesomeeeeee

    by M. K. on 6/22/19The Met Philadelphia - Philadelphia

This show was amazing. Almost wish I could go again. The people in the balconies couldn’t see the whole screen because of the speaker though so may want to adjust it for All people to view. However the show itself was enjoyable and entertaining.

Lonely Island is a MUST SEE LIVE SHOW

by LAVashtheStampede on 6/3/18The Rose - Pasadena

I was blown away by The Lonely Island's first live show (that we know of!) They used the stage and space creatively, without needing huge set pieces or distracting antics. It was just awesome fun in the vein of their SNL Digital Shorts - ridiculous, but well made and performed. If you have a chance to see them, don't miss it!
