About

See what Time Magazine exclaims is, “A don’t miss theatre event!  The #1 Broadway musical of the year.”  Winner of the 2012 TONY AWARD® FOR BEST REVIVAL OF A MUSICAL, The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess is hitting the road with award-winning members of the Broadway cast in this stunning and stirring new staging. Accompanied by a lush 23-piece orchestra, this re-envisioned Broadway production includes such legendary songs as “Summertime,” “It Ain’t Necessarily So,” and “I Got Plenty of Nothing.”

Praised by the New Yorker as, “A great achievement!” and hailed by the Associated Press as, “a Gorgeous version of the Gershwin masterpiece,” The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess is coming to you from its record-breaking engagements at the American Repertory Theater at Harvard University and Broadway’s Richard Rodgers Theatre.   One of Broadway’s most accomplished creative teams, led by Tony Award® -winning director Diane Paulus (Pippin, Hair), Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Suzan-Lori Parks (Topdog/Underdog), and two-time Obie Award-winning composer Diedre L. Murray (Running Man), have re-imagined George Gershwin, DuBose and Dorothy Heyward and Ira Gershwin’s legendary masterwork specifically for the musical theatre, what USA Today calls “a canny and exuberant re-affirmation of the original’s enduring brilliance.”

Porgy and Bess was a fantastic show!

by oldiesfromiowa on 4/6/14Des Moines Performing Arts - Civic Center - Des Moines

I thoroughly enjoyed the production of Porgy and Bess. The continuous music by a fine orchestra was outstanding. The actor playing Porgy was especially amazing. Everyone connected with the production to to be commended. Some times I had difficulty getting the lyrics of some of the songs. I would certainly recommend this show to everyone.

The dancing and singing was very good and the story line was excellent. It moved along and did not drag out.

A beautiful rendition of the Gershwin opera. Magnificent vocals; arresting reminder of the not too distant past and its sorrows.

Amazing production. Fabulous voices. Great choreography. And, of course, the music and story. One of the truly great shows of all time. It never ages, but only gets more relevant.

    meh

by Julesbell on 3/18/14Detroit Opera House - Detroit

Will a less than stellar review be published, I wonder? I saw "Porgy and Bess" on Broadway 20+ yrs ago-- the acting was as breathtaking as the singing. Alas, not so with this touring production. Nearly every emotional beat was missed. the moments that should be heightened were treated the same as every other moment. Bess' decisions--challenging, excrutiating decisions for her-- were not agonized over. We saw no shift. The staging didnt lend itself to emotional moments, either. Often, the characters not part of the main action distracted frm the action. Often the director staged major moments off stage, like Bess and Crown--so we dont understand the depths of her suffering. Her submission to him wasnt frought w fear or suffering or desperation or surrender or rage-- nothing. I understand the designers wanted the set to evoke despair and poverty--but its monochromatic monodimensional single plane evoked little. LIkewise, the costumes lacked any texture, nor did they assist in better defining the characters. Their lack of color made them blend into the set. And the picnic costumes were all florals, none distressed--looked store bought fresh from JC Penney. Unrealistic. The light plot was basic, so where lights could have directed our attention to important moments, they did not. So many details missed, e.g., actors lift supposedly heavy items--suitcase, picnic basket--effortlessly. None of the elements assisted each other, and while the voices were lovely and excellently trained, it was hard to care about any of the characters deeply. And the audience tried, oh they were quiet and they tried. But we got so little for our exorbitant ticket prices.

    Still trying to like opera

by Gourmand on 3/17/14Detroit Opera House - Detroit

I am glad that this version was edited down. The voices were wonderful and staging was engaging. I thought that a more contemporary opera might help me turn the corner on liking the art form but I guess I'm just not there yet. Not giving up quite yet...

by Condor1947 on 3/17/14Shea's Performing Arts Center - Buffalo

Never understood the context of the music til now. Great performance and worth every dime. The wife and I even had the opportunity to talk with some of the cast members over dinner! If u missed the Buffalo showing it would be worth the travel to see it at its next location.

    great show

by niagarariverfatman on 3/17/14Shea's Performing Arts Center - Buffalo

the performance was great. Singers in this touring company had amazing voices, particularly the lead actors. Acoustics in Shea's not as good as we would like to have. We were in row Y (main floor)

Porgy and Bess - Plusses and Minusses

by Keystoner on 3/16/14Shea's Performing Arts Center - Buffalo

I've heard about this play for years and finally got to experience it on the night of my wife's 76th birthday in Buffalo at the Shea's Theater. I had read that the producer did a Class A job on this version, and I would agree. Everything about the play was just super: costumes, the set, the pyrotechnics, the singing, etc. The one big minus for me is that I cannot hear well, so I understood little of what was going on. If I would have read the story and seen some words to the songs beforehand, I would have enjoyed the show much, much more. As it was, both my wife and I were a little disappointed. It does not rank in our Top Five ever, but I think it could have. The words, with the southern and ethnic accents just seem to blend into one and other, hardly distinguishable. I hope others in the audience appreciated the show more than we did. I suspect it was very, very good.

Porgy and Bess - an American Classic

by Hudsonut on 3/13/14Detroit Opera House - Detroit

Actors/singers/dancers were excellent. Minimalist sets, not uncommon for a touring company were attractive, but did, at times, not make it clear enough regarding where the action was taking place. The only fly in the ointment was the orchestra. They did not seem in synch with the performers and often seemed to be in competition with the vocalists in terms of volume, to the point where lyrics became incomprehensible. I can't help but wonder if the orchestra was a local pick-up band. Regardless, ultimately the fault lies with the conductor. Perhaps his hearing aid needed new batteries.
