About

See what Time Magazine exclaims is, “A don’t miss theatre event!  The #1 Broadway musical of the year.”  Winner of the 2012 TONY AWARD® FOR BEST REVIVAL OF A MUSICAL, The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess is hitting the road with award-winning members of the Broadway cast in this stunning and stirring new staging. Accompanied by a lush 23-piece orchestra, this re-envisioned Broadway production includes such legendary songs as “Summertime,” “It Ain’t Necessarily So,” and “I Got Plenty of Nothing.”

Praised by the New Yorker as, “A great achievement!” and hailed by the Associated Press as, “a Gorgeous version of the Gershwin masterpiece,” The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess is coming to you from its record-breaking engagements at the American Repertory Theater at Harvard University and Broadway’s Richard Rodgers Theatre.   One of Broadway’s most accomplished creative teams, led by Tony Award® -winning director Diane Paulus (Pippin, Hair), Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Suzan-Lori Parks (Topdog/Underdog), and two-time Obie Award-winning composer Diedre L. Murray (Running Man), have re-imagined George Gershwin, DuBose and Dorothy Heyward and Ira Gershwin’s legendary masterwork specifically for the musical theatre, what USA Today calls “a canny and exuberant re-affirmation of the original’s enduring brilliance.”

    Amazina voices!!!

    by DD515 on 6/8/14ASU Gammage - Tempe

Voices were AMAZING!!! . . . and we had the opportunity to go to the "talk back" where some of the actors came out front after the performance to talk to the audience and answer questions. Very informal. Actors were personalbe and friendly.

Great dancing, beautiful voices, lots of romantic tension - this show would make George and Ira proud.

    Fun evening out!

by Bracelets on 6/7/14ASU Gammage - Tempe

I went with a friend, and for the first time at Gammage I was totally impressed with the building. The entire cast was excellent: beautiful voices among the women and the men's resounding voices were great. All actors were superb! Now that I'm familiar with the seating, I will try to get seats at a lower vantage point.

My husband & I enjoyed it a lot; the only negative was that we could not understand most of the words in the songs.

Porgy & Bess was ver disappointing!

by Anonymous on 6/7/14ASU Gammage - Tempe

We were very disappointed with this production. In fact, we left at intermission. We could not understand any of the dialogue that took place in the first act, so we looked up the story line on our cell phones at intermission and realized we had not undrestoof any of it. Allowing four of us decided to leave, rather than subject ourselves to another hour of frustration.

    If you like Gershwin...

by MrsSha on 6/6/14ASU Gammage - Tempe

If you like Gershwin, this is a must-see! The singing was wonderful, and the adaptation was pretty good. I really had wanted to see the opera and didn't realize this was the adaptation (yes, I didn't do my homework), but the essentials were there. The singing (because it was not an opera) had the opera qualities along with stylistic coloring of the culture and times. The singers went in and out of that expertly. I felt the show jumped really fast for Porgy and Bess meeting to the point of falling in love--but the show was long enough that it couldn't keep everything. The Gammage Theatre was very big...my first time there. Sat 2nd to last row in the back in the lower level but a little in from wall, so it was a looking fairly straight at the stage. I did miss some words--not due to any hearing loss (hearing is very good), but the diction along with dialect, orchestra balance, and/or any mic balance issues could have been an issue. I asked my friend (an opera singer) sitting next to me if she also missed some diction/words, and she agreed as did my 21-year-old daughter who just graduated with a double major in chemistry and music (vocal performance). I just went to see "Memphis" in Popejoy Hall in Albuquerque, NM, and had the same issues there. Could be the hit and miss of acoustics that happens in most concert halls and large theatres. For being so far back from the stage, I still felt the energy of the show; however, I was mad that I had forgotten my binoculars which I love to bring to get better facial expressions that are totally missed that far away.

    The Best!

    by jbm500 on 6/6/14ASU Gammage - Tempe

The voices in this production were unparalleled. I didn't know what to expect and I got one of the most memorable nights of theater I've attended in years. Not only the leads, but all the supporting roles were extremely strong. The scenery was simple, the lighting effective, and the singers made the show.

    The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess

by Boundary on 4/21/14Des Moines Performing Arts - Civic Center - Des Moines

The show was excellent and the singing was fantastic. My sisters and I didn't really know the story of Porgy and Bess prior to the show. The lead actors did a wonderful job of creating the love story on stage. My sisters and I really loved the show and would highly recommend it.

    Good Acting

by BillyJoanna on 4/14/14Des Moines Performing Arts - Civic Center - Des Moines

Overall, it was a worthwhile experience. I saw it on Broadway many years ago and the touring version was quite different. Some of the main ensemble sets seemed a bit canned...more bent on getting audience approval than meeting sequenced achievement.

Great production but a somewhat dated story

by Fixturegirl on 4/9/14Des Moines Performing Arts - Civic Center - Des Moines

The acting and singing were unbelievable, although we had some difficulty understanding the soprano lyrics. The scenery could have been enhanced a little. . I became emotionally vested in this show in Act II and could feel the other audience members do the same, with moans of disapproval (Bess's choices) and heartbreak. But to listen to the music of George Gershwin along with a most receptive Des Moines audience was joyous and inspiring. I would happily recommend this show!

Porgy & Bess average at best

by nanand on 4/9/14Des Moines Performing Arts - Civic Center - Des Moines

While I did think the voices were beautiful, I found it very hard to understand what they were saying a lot of the time! Don't know if the acoustics were working against them or what, but made the story hard to follow. First act was very slow.

I thought it was like a high school play, which isnt bad but not worth it. The male singers were good, the female singers not so good.

Porgy and Bess was above expectations!

by beachdaughter on 4/7/14Des Moines Performing Arts - Civic Center - Des Moines

This stage production with very appropriate set took us away to Catfish Row and into the lives of its residents. We were drawn by the incredible voices, costumes, and acting into another time and place. The orchestra and songs made this musical come alive. What a production! All credit goes to the actor/singers and musicians for working together to make this a memorable night for the audience.
