I was overjoyed. Kevin Short’s voice sounds as if you can physically climb into it.

About
See what Time Magazine exclaims is, “A don’t miss theatre event! The #1 Broadway musical of the year.” Winner of the 2012 TONY AWARD® FOR BEST REVIVAL OF A MUSICAL, The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess is hitting the road with award-winning members of the Broadway cast in this stunning and stirring new staging. Accompanied by a lush 23-piece orchestra, this re-envisioned Broadway production includes such legendary songs as “Summertime,” “It Ain’t Necessarily So,” and “I Got Plenty of Nothing.”
Praised by the New Yorker as, “A great achievement!” and hailed by the Associated Press as, “a Gorgeous version of the Gershwin masterpiece,” The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess is coming to you from its record-breaking engagements at the American Repertory Theater at Harvard University and Broadway’s Richard Rodgers Theatre. One of Broadway’s most accomplished creative teams, led by Tony Award® -winning director Diane Paulus (Pippin, Hair), Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Suzan-Lori Parks (Topdog/Underdog), and two-time Obie Award-winning composer Diedre L. Murray (Running Man), have re-imagined George Gershwin, DuBose and Dorothy Heyward and Ira Gershwin’s legendary masterwork specifically for the musical theatre, what USA Today calls “a canny and exuberant re-affirmation of the original’s enduring brilliance.”

Poignant, Historical Revival
by DrRinaldi70 on 4/1/12Murphy Fine Arts Center - Morgan State - BaltimoreRating: 5 out of 5Authentic Brilliant Great choreography Great Set Great Music Wonderful book and music -Gershwin and Heyward at their complex best Startling cast cohesiveness, movement, rhythm. Great Grand Opera ----top Met/LaScala perrformance quality. A contribution to the National Culture, counterpointing the sketchiness, lack of depth, and distortion of the current. Broadway " revival". So glad to have seen the show.
Wonderful Play!
by NiceDee on 3/31/12Murphy Fine Arts Center - Morgan State - BaltimoreRating: 4 out of 5Great price and great location! The auditorium is beautiful and perfect for this type of opera! Great play! The actors displayed their abilities on stage and their performances were wonderful, the singing was fantastic, and the set was marvelous. Crown, Sportin Life, Porgy and Bess were all stars. The entire cast was excellent! Great job, great performances! We had front row seats and the sound was perfect! The orchestra in front of us was not overwhelming nor did it drown out the voices of the actors.

My first Opera
by PinkyPolarBear on 10/20/10Mahalia Jackson Theater of the Performing Arts - New OrleansRating: 5 out of 5Wow! was I impressed. Not knowing what I was I was going to see or hear I was blown away with the voices of all the singers. I did have a little trouble understanding the words, but the words were sub-titles and it really helped. Some of the singing and passion behind the words actually brought me to tears.
incredible

Porgy and Bess
by Glendas on 10/19/10Mahalia Jackson Theater of the Performing Arts - New OrleansRating: 5 out of 5....It was spectacular! Occasionally it was hard to hear some of the vocalists, but definitely the subtitle at top of stage was very helpful and added so much to the understanding. The special effects and the staging were also very effective. The only real distraction was people coming in late and also leaving early. Can the doors be locked? or have the latecomers stand in the stair well till a more appropriate time to end?
Porgy and Bess a passionate night!!!
by 123Star on 10/17/10Mahalia Jackson Theater of the Performing Arts - New OrleansRating: 5 out of 5Porgy and Bess was set in a realistic back drop. An evening full of drama and passionate encounters with power opera and displays of loyalty and rejection. I felt the deep base baritone and the chorus of hymns intertwined into a story full of events of drama and lust. What a manificent cast of performers! I wish I could review each one but the page could not hold all the great attributes. I felt the senuality and Porgy's strong love for Bess taken to extremes.
