About

From Tony®, Grammy®, and Academy Award® winner Elton John, Tony-winning director Anna D. Shapiro (August: Osage County, Steppenwolf Theatre), and Tony-winning producer Kevin McCollum (In the Heights, Avenue Q, Rent, and this season's hit musical SIX) comes The Devil Wears Prada, The Musical.

Runway magazine. The supreme authority of the high-fashion world, and the new home of assistant Andy Sachs. It's a position a million people would kill for, but under the sharp stilettos of Runway's legendary editor-in-chief, Miranda Priestly, the job is no dream. Up against Miranda's blistering leadership and stratospheric expectations, Andy is pushed to the edge, forced to choose between her career and her own happiness.

Based on the hit film and featuring an all-star creative team led by Elton John and Anna D. Shapiro, with lyrics by singer-songwriter Shaina Taub (Suffs at The Public), a book by Kate Wetherhead (Submissions Only), choreography by James Alsop (Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat), and music supervision by Nadia DiGiallonardo (Waitress), The Devil Wears Prada, The Musical is a glamorous and hilarious story about finding your place and discovering what matters most.

    Great dancers, actors and sets

by Beth on 8/13/22James M. Nederlander Theatre - Chicago

Enjoyed the musical mostly, but believe it could use some work still. (Attended 8-10-22) Need better costumes- particularly for Andy. This is about fashion- two yellow dresses- meh. Should have been more like the first one that she was only in for 30 seconds! Miranda’s costumes were great. Need a memorable number- there was nothing to hum on the way home. Urban metal overpass converting to Tour Eiffel was genius- loved the set design. Dancers were great, but choreography reminded me of HS/college level. Nigel was the BOMB- his songs/lyrics, voice and acting were just the best- unequivocal star of the show. Elton did the Nigel character proud! I have watched Anna’s productions at Steppenwolf for all the years she was there. She clearly made the actors act well, but the musical suffered. Hope it gets stronger in NYC- DWP is one of my favorite movies and was SO hoping the theater production would be worthy. Not yet.

    Good Not Great

by pattinola on 8/13/22James M. Nederlander Theatre - Chicago

All the cast was great. The second act was terrific, but the first needs work. Way too slow, choppy, and kinda hokey. Songs in first act also sluggish. They need to use Beth Leavel better - she is so phenomenal, yet only has one real song. I was disappointed in the costumes. Worth seeing as is, but hopefully some of this will be worked on before Broadway.

Good, but needs a few tweaks

by kt on 8/12/22James M. Nederlander Theatre - Chicago

All in all an enjoyable night at the theatre. There are a few tweaks and cuts that can be made before this launces, but I believe they'll get there.

    Updated and funny

by That's all on 8/12/22James M. Nederlander Theatre - Chicago

I wasn't sure what to expect, but this performance was 5star! I read the critics reviews sniping at the costumes...aside from the yellow 80's prom dress, the costumes were beautiful. The critics also panned "Miranda" as not being mean enough or abusive enough, wake up size six, in the wake of "Me Too" abusive and toxic work environments are not "fashionable" . The story and characters were updated to reflect now. I loved it and encourage all of you to see it!!!

    I was disappointed

by That Guy on 8/10/22James M. Nederlander Theatre - Chicago

This was just okay. The first act was decent - upbeat and fun. The second act was a painful snooze. Too many sappy ballads. For a show about fashion, the fashions were not very impressive. I think the set design was a highlight. When the Eiffel Tower appeared it actually got a round of applause. I don’t think it’s quite ready for Broadway yet.

    Great show!

by Megan on 8/10/22James M. Nederlander Theatre - Chicago

Not surprisingly, the music is great. The sets were creative and impressive. I normally get antsy at shows and this one kept me into it and entertained.

    Good but not Great

by FXApple on 8/9/22James M. Nederlander Theatre - Chicago

The movie was excellent but it did not transition well to a musical. A few of the songs and arrangements were good, but most was average at best. The lead had a strong voice but lacked control and she sometimes sounded rather shrill. The script pretty much mimicked the movie with some funny additions. There was no singing in the movie and I believe that is one of the reasons it did not make it enjoyable as a musical. It failed to compare to West Side Story, Jersey Boys or even Oklahoma that all had music in their respective film debuts. Overall the orchestra was the best part of the play and Javier Munoz was the best performer out of the cast.

Brought my daughter & son’s girlfriend! A real girls Day! Great seats in the loge! The loge seems to be the best at the Nederlander theater! Elton John music always good! Play followed the movie, acting & especially the costumes-so fun!

    Needs a Lot of Work

by Shawn on 8/9/22James M. Nederlander Theatre - Chicago

Song lyrics really need work. Song kind of forgettable. Act 1 closing needs a lot of work. Andreas friends and boyfriend can probably be cut out.
