Disappointing
by PD on 9/3/22James M. Nederlander Theatre - ChicagoSingers were all great; songs, not so much. Couldn’t remember one tune after show was over, frankly after the song themselves were sung. This was a story set in the world of high fashion, yet costuming was terribly lacking. Great pains were taken to depict male dancers as diverse and forward. With the exception of a design wall and the character Jacqueline’s first dress, the clothing for the female characters was straight out of JCPenny’s. Andy wore an unremarkable yellow prom dress to the Met Ball. At one point Miranda was inexplicably dressed in a chalk-stripe pantsuit straight out of the ‘70s. Scenery ranged from okay to exceptional. The roommate characters shouldn’t have been necessary to explain what was going on had the playwright shown us rather than rely on them to tell us. Writing 101. Character of Nate was a throwaway. Had I not read book &/or seen movie, I can’t say I’d actually be able to follow story. Needs a lot of work. It was, by far, one of my biggest disappointments.
