About

The Cat Empire is a genre-defying ensemble that formed in Melbourne, Australia, in 1999. Blending ska, jazz, rocksteady, and hip-hop, the six-piece produces a wildly eclectic sound and live show that has toured worldwide, from major festivals like Glastonbury to making buzzworthy appearances on the Late Show with David Letterman and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. The Cat Empire has produced multiple No. 1 albums in Australia, including Two Shoes (2005) and Rising with the Sun (2016). After announcing their decision to disband in 2021, a refreshed lineup was announced in July 2023 led by original members Ollie McGill and Felix Riebl with the additions of Grace Barbé on bass, Daniel Farrugia on drums, Neda Rahmani on percussion and Lazaro Numa on trumpet. On August 25, The Cat Empire released their ninth studio album, Where The Angels Fall, with a supporting world tour scheduled for the fall.

  • The Cat Empire was outstanding!!

by EmpireFan on 12/15/09Nokia Theatre Times Square - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

The performance on December 5th was beyond all expectations - a perfect blend of diverse talent, instrumentation, performance and poetry. The Nokia was an excellent venue that was more than worth the trip to NYC. The intimate setting enhanced the high energy and big sound of this amazing ensemble. Overall an unforgettable show!

  • Catastic!

by KVS2 on 12/9/09Nokia Theatre Times Square - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

The Cat Empire's chemistry, showmanship (they actually smile onstage) tight instrumentation, ethereal vocal ranges, and original music and lyrics cannot be matched as far as I'm concerned. How refreshing to listen to a band that actually creates songs that differ from one another with a world sound of rhythm and percussion that goes straight to my heart. They are absolutely phenomenal.

Loved the band - they jam. And Nokia is a great venue. Check Cat Empire when they hit the States next year!

  • The Cat Empire show was amazing!

My first time seeing them live...they sound even better than on their CDs. Really great crowd. Really great venue with super-efficient staff. Really sad they don't come around here more often!

The best, most original and most all-around talented band that I've seen in 20 years!! If you haven't been to the Nokia Theatre - NYC, don't miss this outstanding venue.

  • The Cat Empire: Champions Among Men

by Emalullamie on 12/7/09Nokia Theatre Times Square - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

There are no words to describe the utterly amazing musicianship and vibe that comes from this group. Do yourself a favor and buy all their albums because they are changing the face of music and you're missing it!

  • The Cat Empire--a new favorite band!

by luvsCats04 on 12/7/09Nokia Theatre Times Square - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

So I took my boyfriend to this show because it is one of his favorite bands. I've only heard a few songs such as "Sly" and "So Many Nights" but I was very happy with the performance. There was so much energy and such a diverse range of musical styles. I can see now why the crowd was so diverse! I would definitely recommend it to anyone! The venue was nice as well because it was small and more personal than some other places that I've been to. We are both hoping to see them the next time they are in the States.

Sick!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Great Show. These guys rock!

  • Great Musicians

by javierireyes on 12/7/09Nokia Theatre Times Square - New YorkRating: 3 out of 5

The Cat Empire consists of a group of great musicians, but the overall sound of the band sounds kind of empty compared to the incredible sound of their records. At times the extended solos interfered with the feel of the song and killed the mood detaching the listener from the concert experience. Overall the show was a good one but not a memorable one.

The Cat Empire played an unforgettable show with an astounding level of energy. The tone quality was phenomenal, the band was amazingly well in sync, the singing was amped up (in perfect tune), and the improvisation was nothing short of brilliant. They played a blend of old and new tunes- all the old favorites and a few amazing surprises. I recommend this band to anyone interested in Jazz, Ska, Alternative or Fusion music looking for a high energy show.

Have been a fan for years and this was the first time I was able to see Cat Empire. Great selection of songs and a rockin' energy. Was also very impressed by Felix's humility and Harry's trumpeting. Just wish they would come to ny more often!

  • Expanding the Empire

by Skedder on 12/6/09Nokia Theatre Times Square - New YorkRating: 4 out of 5

I love Cat Empire. I think they may be the best kept secret in music today. So much talent. The songs are all so catchy. The music is almost indescribable. It incorporates rhythyms from around the world. It was great to be among other devoted fans. Felix and Harry are both great vocalists and fun to watch in person. The musicians were top notch. My only disappointment was the song selection. The band seemed intent on focusing upon the mid-tempo numbers. No Car Song! No Protons, Neutrons, Electrons! Almost like they intentionally left the fun stuff out. Much more focus on the middlle eastern rhythyms; also lots of long, drawn out solos. Interesting stuff, but not their best. Will definitely give them another chance in June when they return to support the new CD they are now finishing.

  • The Empire Is Rising

by BillyQuigley on 12/6/09Nokia Theatre Times Square - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

This was probably one of the greatest shows I've ever attended in my entire life. All of these guys were amazing and I wish that they played the states more.

one of the best shows i've been too. the energy was amazing. amazing talent across the board.

  • The Cat Empire in need of a Cat Nap?

by USfanoffelix on 12/6/09Nokia Theatre Times Square - New YorkRating: 4 out of 5

I was introduced to The Cat Empire by an Assie friend about 4 years ago, and saw them in San Fran on their last tour. Last night's show was very similar, but lacked the "fun" factor. They seemed to be going through the motions, but not enjoying it. I love Felix, but he played to the cameras and and to the right side of the stage. He came over to our side 3 times (I was in front-I counted). There was no chemistry between Felix and Harry-it was almost as if they were doing separate concerts. Harry was a show stealer, as always, his talent is amazing. I wish they could look more like one band. I am willing to give them the benifit of the doubt, as it was their last night on tour and I am sure they were ready to get home. Still love them and can't wait for the new album to be released!

  • Amazing

by CBoston on 12/6/09Nokia Theatre Times Square - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Absolutely amazing, I came all the way from Boston to see these guys, 5 hour car ride SO WORTH IT! The venue was awesome, the energy in the room was so great, I had a blast THEY PLAYED THE WINE SONG!! YESS

  • Cat Empire State

by NealJMD on 12/6/09Nokia Theatre Times Square - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

This was the best show I've ever seen. I went in with massive expectations and they were exceeded by the band's stage presence and musical talent. The positive energy on the dance floor was absolutely amazing, and even long jams and instrumental solos were tight and engaging. If only they played in America more...

  • The Cat Empire had a party happening.

by felixfan on 12/6/09Nokia Theatre Times Square - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

These guys, bottom line, are incredible. Coming all the way from Australia, their voices and original musical style is unforgettable. They possess a unique stage presence that makes you feel so connected to the sound and all the empire-lover fans in the room. Not to mention, Felix is gorgeous. To say The Cat Empire is talented would be an understatement, but rather they make standing outside Nokia Theater in freezing rain well worth it.

  • by Anonymous on 12/6/09Nokia Theatre Times Square - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

The show was amazing. The guys definitely rocked the night. I can't wait til they come back to the US next summer!
