About

The Cat Empire is a genre-defying ensemble that formed in Melbourne, Australia, in 1999. Blending ska, jazz, rocksteady, and hip-hop, the six-piece produces a wildly eclectic sound and live show that has toured worldwide, from major festivals like Glastonbury to making buzzworthy appearances on the Late Show with David Letterman and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. The Cat Empire has produced multiple No. 1 albums in Australia, including Two Shoes (2005) and Rising with the Sun (2016). After announcing their decision to disband in 2021, a refreshed lineup was announced in July 2023 led by original members Ollie McGill and Felix Riebl with the additions of Grace Barbé on bass, Daniel Farrugia on drums, Neda Rahmani on percussion and Lazaro Numa on trumpet. On August 25, The Cat Empire released their ninth studio album, Where The Angels Fall, with a supporting world tour scheduled for the fall.

  • Beyond Expectations

When The Cat Empire comes within 200 miles of where you live, GO! These are the most talented group of musicians I've ever seen, playing some of the most fun and entertaining music I've ever heard. Halfway through the first song, when the keyboardist went off on a jazz-inspired solo complete with complex phrases and diminished chords, I knew we were in for something special. They have a deep playlist inspired by ska, latin beats and cuban grooves, and arabian chants... The whole evening was magical.

Phenomenal show. The Cat Empire is a truly amazing band to hear live; their studio albums have to way to do justice to their in person performances.

They bring an eclectic blend of world music and the vocals were amazing! They had an ease of blending beats making it a sound of their own.

  • The Cat Empire was a brilliant show.

This was an amazing show. Not only are all the players talented musicians, but also totally entertaining. The energy was high and the songs were clever. They switched from ska sounds to salsa to reggae. I was blown away. They are way better than they sound on CD.

  • The AMAZING Cat Empire

by aSkabandmom on 12/6/09Nokia Theatre Times Square - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

This show was so amazing. Lively, fun, energetic and over all great music. There was a great range of ages in the audience. Their music truly is for everyone. My husband and I took our three teenage sons and three more of their friends. All but one of these kids are in their own ska band; and what a great influence the Cat Empire is to their own music. We cannot wait until they come back again.

  • Energy and Dancing Cat Empire Wins

by spookypoop on 12/6/09Nokia Theatre Times Square - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

I saw them a couple years ago in San Francisco and they were amazing, but tonight was something else. Not only were the horns amazingly good, but Felix was full of an energy that wasn't there in the past. It was a lot of fun with tons of dancing. The convenience fees were a bit much, but I'd pay it to see them again. It's just a lot of fun when you know their songs. Set list is what I remember, not in order.

  • Helluva time

by ShnookerShanzzzel on 12/6/09Nokia Theatre Times Square - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

The Cat Empire was as much fun as it is humanly possible to squeeze into two hours. The atmosphere was so energetic and the band was killin! I wish they played in the States more, especially the East Coast.

  • Cat Empire was AMAZING

by Rakashi on 12/6/09Nokia Theatre Times Square - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

They came on with so much energy, and didn't stop grooving until after their three song encore. They just blew my mind and i suggest seeing them in person. SO AMAZING !!!!

  • Had high expectations, and they exceeded them!

by Elsus on 12/6/09Nokia Theatre Times Square - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

These guys are amazing when they perform live and turn their 4-minute songs into 10-minute songs that change and excite along the way. (If you aren't particularly fond of a song, wait a minute or two and it will change!) Saw them do a 5-song set several years ago and have waited for an opportunity to see them again. The Nokia was a great venue (you can't just have people seated - you need the ability to be on the floor) and the band showed off many more talents this time around: especially Harry with his vocal range, etc. Interestingly, they didn't perform The Car Song (the primary song played by them on WXPN in Philadelphia several years ago) but I wasn't disappointed: they seem to have evolved way beyond The Car Song! I would recommend this band to anyone who loves music. Just hope that people don't ask what TYPE of music it is - it's not easily categorized (which is what makes it so appealing).

  • The Cat Empire was AMAZING!

by Lauren2009 on 12/6/09Nokia Theatre Times Square - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Hands down the BEST show I've ever seen. The Cat Empire could have played until 5am and I would have stayed for every song.

  • Best band ever

by funkyslide on 12/6/09Nokia Theatre Times Square - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Wow. I am a big fan of the empire, and this is my second time seeing them. My only complaint is there was a little too much "jamming". The drum solo did absolutely nothing during "Sly" except destroy the momentum. "The Darkness" was amazing live - I had to give the entire "So Many Nights" album another listen when I got home because of that performance. I also appreciated the 2 dollar tour posters, since it was the last night of the tour. The Empire Horns were excellent. The "Wine Song" could have had at least five minutes shaved off of it. Other than that, a great performance from one of the best bands in the world!!!!

  • Can I give six stars?

by MaryLemon on 12/6/09Nokia Theatre Times Square - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

I've seen many phenomenal bands, but The Cat Empire is hands down the best live band I've ever seen. I used to say that about U2, but I these guys just dethroned them!

  • Imperial Feline Madness!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

by HarrysTwinBrother on 12/6/09Nokia Theatre Times Square - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Wow! What a great show, I have been to 4 Cat Empire shows and they keep getting bigger each time. This band may be little recognized in the United States but in Australia they sell out Rugby stadiums in a matter of minutes, and its clear why. With a totally unique sound and an energy that permeates every fiber of the listener's being, The Cat Empire knows how to get a crowd dancing. They played a good mix of old and newer songs, and the solo's by Ollie, Harry, DJ Jumps, and the rest of the band were outstanding. This band doesn't come around often and this was their last show in the US for a while, but if you see them in your town in the future do not hesitate to see them, it is a guaranteed blast.

  • Outstanding

Absolutely excellent. Incredible stage presence and energy

  • Blessed are The Cat Empire

by VIPts on 12/6/09Nokia Theatre Times Square - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

From the mezzanine, it was almost as much fun watching the pulsing mass of dancing fanatics as it was watching the talented musicians. If these guys don't make you feel good, then something's wrong with you. If they are ever even halfway close to you, you gotta make the trip to see them (we came down from Maine to NYC). NYC was their last performance on a long haul, so have a safe trip home mates!!! We all look forward to your new release this next summer (or winter for you!)... we all have 2 shoes for dancing!

  • by Anonymous on 12/6/09Nokia Theatre Times Square - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

The Prigs opened, and I don't know what they were supposed to be. They were dressed like some 80s band, ha dheavy synth influences (and a keytar!) and at first were kinda cool, but eventually were exposed as an extremely gimmick-oriented band. They used a synth-generated fireworks sound way too often; had it been during one song it would have been interesting, but it played out way too fast, as did the rest of their sound. Cat Empire was lively, engaging, and rocked the house. All five of my stars are for them.

  • CAT EMPIRE ROCKS THE COMMODORE!!!

by vancouvermuso on 11/18/09Commodore Ballroom - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

Totally amazing show on Nov 17th... a Tuesday evening that felt "more like a Saturday and New Years's Eve"!!! The Cat Empire totally got caught up in the great vibe of the crowd, and their energy with substitute drummer, Danny Ferugio, was UNBELIEVEABLE! Best show I have seen in a LONG time!!

  • by Duffnbaker on 11/18/09Troubadour - West HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

Best unknown Band. They need to come to the USA more often
