About

The Cat Empire is a genre-defying ensemble that formed in Melbourne, Australia, in 1999. Blending ska, jazz, rocksteady, and hip-hop, the six-piece produces a wildly eclectic sound and live show that has toured worldwide, from major festivals like Glastonbury to making buzzworthy appearances on the Late Show with David Letterman and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. The Cat Empire has produced multiple No. 1 albums in Australia, including Two Shoes (2005) and Rising with the Sun (2016). After announcing their decision to disband in 2021, a refreshed lineup was announced in July 2023 led by original members Ollie McGill and Felix Riebl with the additions of Grace Barbé on bass, Daniel Farrugia on drums, Neda Rahmani on percussion and Lazaro Numa on trumpet. On August 25, The Cat Empire released their ninth studio album, Where The Angels Fall, with a supporting world tour scheduled for the fall.

  • The Cat Empire brought the house down!

by giersman on 8/2/10Webster Hall - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

As always with these incredibly talented Aussie musicians they simply CAN"T DO A BAD SHOW. We will go see them every single time they come to NYC for sure!

  • TCE Rocks!!

by jonnycat on 8/1/10Webster Hall - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

The show was great! They played a lot of good tunes from the new album, Cinema. And there were plenty of older favs, as well, like Fishies, Sly, and The Chariot. The biggest bummer was how short the show was. I don't think it was even two hours! I don't know whose rule that was, but in NYC I expected to be jamming late into the night with these guys...

You cannot beat this group for a live act - they are just awesome.

  • by Anonymous on 7/31/10Webster Hall - New York CityRating: 5 out of 5

The Cat Empire is one of the best live bands I have ever seen. They are high energy and it is obviously that they love what they do. They showcase their musicaility as well as their love of performing and the crowd loves it. They are truly meant to be seen live because they add so much to each song than on their studio albums. I have seen them twice and would definitely see them again!

The Cat Empire is one of the best live shows I've been to. I have seen them twice and they are high energy and play a good variety of songs from each of their albums. Even though they just put out a new album, the show was not too heavy on new material. Each musician gets a chance to shine with solos and the band communicates well. I would definitely go to another show! They clearly love what they do and it shows in their performance.

A most amazing live show, unbelievable energy, amazing horns, highly recommend seeing them when in town!

  • First time I saw The Cat Empire live.Unbelievable!

by DomT on 7/31/10Webster Hall - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

I have been listened to these guys for only around a year, and I was pissed when I missed the New York show in December, but I was finally about to see them at Webster Hall and it was an unbelievable, unforgeable night.

  • From Australia to NYC, The Cat Empire killed it!

by Skeskinyan on 7/31/10Webster Hall - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

The concert was amazing from the very first moment The Cat Empire walked on stage. Starting with their old songs, they got the crowd into it from the very start. Debuting their new album, Carousel, and alternating between previous hits, these Australian musicians brought the house down at Webster Hall.

  • Fantastic!

by FortySeven on 7/31/10Webster Hall - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

An Incredible show. The band has the great stage energy, and simply put, gave the best live performance I have ever seen. You do not really know The Cat Empire until you have seen them in concert. After the show I stuck around and met several (though not all) of the band members, they are really friendly awesome guys. I can't wait to see them again.

  • Rare Cat Empire show - worth seeing!

    by Bill75 on 7/31/10Webster Hall - New YorkRating: 4 out of 5

The band has progressed over the years, although they still lack a dependable backlog of material. The venue acoustics were terrible (way too much bass and bass drum), so the more important and interesting aspects of the sound were overwhelmed.

  • Just brilliant

by annabellee on 7/31/10Webster Hall - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

This is my second Cat Empire concert (and first concert at Webster Hall). It was every bit as amazing as I anticipated. The Cat Empire is THE best live band/act I have ever seen. I was not super familiar with the song off their newest album, but the Cat Empire is a band that you don't need to know to have an absolutely wonderful time. I took two friends who had never heard them before, and both of them enjoyed themselves. my only regret is that the Cat Empire won't be back for another year.

  • Mindblowing

by thestacester on 7/31/10Webster Hall - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

They rarely come stateside but when they do, they make it count! Webster hall was the best show i've ever seen them play- definitely go see them if you enjoy dancing and having fun!

  • The Cat Empire!!!

I LOVE this band! and was super happy to learn that they would perform in NYC. Great musicians, fantastic show. Keep it up!

  • The Empire be Rising!

    by Gato05 on 7/31/10Webster Hall - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

As they always do on those rare rare dates they give us here in the USA, The Cat Empire absolutely rocked the house with their blessed blend of ska, salsa, latin, jazz, rock & roll rythms. The music is so good as to border on the sublime and sacred. Cuz sharing some meals, beats, music and philosphy of a deep love of being alive is something I wish the world could do. May the Empire Rise and reign as kings of the human heart and soul forever and ever, Amen. (and may they pleease do that in NYC far more frequently!) Love and thanks to Felix, Harry, Oliver, Will, Jumps & Ryan Peace Out

  • THE CAT ROCKS!!!!!!

by KualaLumpur on 7/31/10Webster Hall - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

The Cat Empire is AMAZING!! Best concert I have ever seen. This is the second time seeing them and they were even better than the first. Would go anywhere to see them. A HUGE thanks to our best friends for turning us on to them.

  • Had to be there

by Kaulfurst on 7/31/10Webster Hall - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Just go. Cat Empire live is more alive than I can tell you! In decades of concert going, 1st time ever the audience brought back a band for an encore, by continuing to sing (hum?) chorus from last song, only to have band come back out and accompany the audience in the jam, and just start it all again! Classy a moment as classy gets!

  • Amazing, as always.

    by snapshot2 on 7/31/10Webster Hall - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

The Cat Empire is one of those bands who electrify the stage. Their albums are great, but seeing them live is so much better. Their energy, their obvious love of performance and their sheer talent were on show last night. If you ever get a chance, see them live.

It was a great show! Awesome energy! The crowd was into their music from start to end.

  • Amazing, amazing

by annabellee on 12/28/09Nokia Theatre Times Square - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

show that completely lived up to -- and exceeded -- my expectations. I bought tickets for my brother and myself the second I saw TCE was coming to NYC. The months of waiting were definitely worth it. I've been to a handful of concerts, but TCE were the best I've ever seen live. I was just blown away. I'm looking forward to the next time they're in the states.
