About

The Cat Empire is a genre-defying ensemble that formed in Melbourne, Australia, in 1999. Blending ska, jazz, rocksteady, and hip-hop, the six-piece produces a wildly eclectic sound and live show that has toured worldwide, from major festivals like Glastonbury to making buzzworthy appearances on the Late Show with David Letterman and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. The Cat Empire has produced multiple No. 1 albums in Australia, including Two Shoes (2005) and Rising with the Sun (2016). After announcing their decision to disband in 2021, a refreshed lineup was announced in July 2023 led by original members Ollie McGill and Felix Riebl with the additions of Grace Barbé on bass, Daniel Farrugia on drums, Neda Rahmani on percussion and Lazaro Numa on trumpet. On August 25, The Cat Empire released their ninth studio album, Where The Angels Fall, with a supporting world tour scheduled for the fall.

  • The Cat Empire / Best show EVER!!

    by Richrad20 on 11/16/09Troubadour - West HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

The Venue was small but it made seeing the The Cat Empire more personal. I went with my son and we had a blast. The crowd was fun to watch dance and sing along with. The Troubadour was easy to get too, parking was a breeze, and the crowd was cool. I've been listing to the band since 2006 and they put on a great show that felt like it was just for us. The Cat Empire has a great range of music style and they worked it. We traveled from Humboldt Co. to Hollywood ( round trip 1500 mi) in 2 days and we would do it in a heart beat again. One of the best shows I have ever seen. Big thanks to the Troubadour for having this amazing band play on the west coast.

  • Cat Empire rocks LA

by Bmaz on 11/16/09Troubadour - West HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

Absolutely amazing! Between Felix's never ending smile, Harry's soul rattling voice, and being 5 feet from the action, this concert was better than we could've imagined!

  • The Cat Empire NEVER dissapoints!

by mikroach on 11/16/09Troubadour - West HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

Saw Cat Empire at the Troubadour...what an amazingly cool venue!! The opening band, Allensworth, were great. The Empire, as usual, blew my mind. This band is so good that we met a couple guys who flew in from WISCONSIN to see the show, as well as a couple from Arizona....obviously this band is worth the $25 ticket, and then some! The only gripe I had was with their Merch. table....I would've spent major$$$ on Cat Empire stuff had it been interesting at all!! C'mon fellas, you guys could've made bank, it's LA after all!! Of course, the Music is better than any T-shirt can describe anyway!!

  • The Cat Empire show was AMAZING!!!!

by Downunder on 11/15/09Troubadour - West HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

I am lucky enough to have been to hundreds upon hundreds of concerts and seeing The Cat Empire rock the Troubadour was right up there in the top BEST SHOWS EVER!!!! They engage the audience and demonstrate an obvious passion for their profession from start to finish.

  • Best concert I've ever been to.

    by BigMoe1090 on 11/15/09Troubadour - West HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

As the title says, this was without a doubt the best concert i've ever attended. Not only were the musicians incredible showmen, but their mastery of their instruments was mind blowing. Would I recommend this to a friend? Hell, I would pay for their ticket.

  • Cat Empire = greatest group ever

by eahicks on 11/15/09Troubadour - West HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

The show was amazing, simply amazing. I could try and elaborate on that, but i dont think i have to. The venue was great too, i love the small little joints like that where everyone is packed in shoulder to shoulder. The place had awesome acoustics too!

  • Most Electrifying Concert Experience Of My Life.

by jkwebber on 11/15/09Troubadour - West HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

I first heard the Cat Empire in a small art store in Washington DC about 8 months ago. They had a single track on a mix CD, called A New Groove, that was playing in the store. As soon as I heard it, I knew there was something special about the music. I bought the CD and flew back to Los Angeles, and over the last half year I have become a true fan. Adding two US shows (New York and LA) to the end of their Canadian tour, this was the first US show they had played in three years. I was anxious to see if the Cat Empire, playing live, would live up to my (rather high) expectations. The simple truth is that they shattered each and every one of them. The experience of the night was one of pure unified adrenaline surging through the crowd. The entire room was dancing, the cheers were deafening, and the music was infectious, sublime, and truly magical. You could not help but be swept up in the energy of it. They played both new and old songs (A fact that was immediately appreciated by the audience, by way of excessive cheering). Starting off with Fishies, they played an expansive set including Days Like These, Two Shoes, The Lost Song, and The Return ending with a duel encore of The Wine Song and The Chariot.

  • Rockin' Show

by petalumamusiclover on 11/15/09Troubadour - West HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

The Cat always kicks ass live and this show was no exception. We drove over 800 miles round trip to see them and it was so worth it. They always have the crowd on their feet and it was nice to have the extra horns this time around. Only downside was that the vocals at the Troubadour were a bit muddy. Can't wait 'till they come back around - hopefully will make it up to Northern California on the next tour.

  • The Cat Empire: Amazing Virtuosic Performance

    by Loner7 on 11/15/09Troubadour - West HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

The intimate venue of the Troubadore created a perfect showcase for the Cat Empire. Complete with a horn section, absent their last tour in the US, they rocked the audience with a variety of tunes, each unique, well composed, and rife with virtuosic display! It's a shame this band comes through LA so seldom.

  • by Choliefish on 11/15/09Troubadour - West HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

This was the 4th time I've seen "The Empire" in LA. (2nd at Troubadour), One of the best live bands ever! You just gotta catch them.

  • The Cat Empire handles LA

by genoside on 11/15/09Troubadour - West HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

When this amazing band - full of truly talented musicians from across a broad genre - makes it to your town, you better bet there! The bottom line is the Cat Empire doesn't know how to put out a bad song on record. And the best part about their live show is that they sound the same if not better live! Last night's show was especially a treat as they flew out Ross Erwin on trumpet. I don't think i need to preach to the choir here, but if you don't have their 4 studio albums, pick them up. You will NOT be disappointed. Next year, they're putting out a new record, so all we can hope for here in LA is that they make it out again next year!

  • The Cat Empire was indescribable!

by Anonymous on 11/15/09Troubadour - West HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

The Cat Empire was completely overwhelming. I could not believe their raw talent. Each member is individually incredible and talented in their musical choice. I could listen to them for hours and hours on end. It was amazing to hear them sing and play because they sound EXACTLY the same way they do on CD, except even better. That is incredible because most times bands will sound worse (or the singing will sound worse) live, but not these guys...I will go again once they come back!

  • Soooooo Much Fun!!!

by jtamayo on 11/15/09Troubadour - West HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

The music was incredible. I was blown away. Definitely worth the money.

  • Best Concert Ever

by geeghee on 11/15/09Troubadour - West HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

This was the best concert I have ever seen. The Cat Empire live is unparalleled.

  • THE CAT EMPIRE DELIVERS!

by MACSHUFFLE on 11/15/09Troubadour - West HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

The Cat Empire at the Troubadour last night was amazing. Opening up with Fishies set the tone. Felix literally smiles through the entire two hour set even while singing he's got that unforgettable grin. Great front man. I would say the vocal leads were split evenly between him and Harry. Harry is a passionate singer and he's great to watch perform as well. The Empire horns added a great element to the lively sound especially the trumpet player who ripped a fantastic solo out on THE LOST SONG. One of my fav's. I wish they would have thrown in Miserere or No Longer There but overall it was a good setlist. I hope they come back again soon. It was a packed house (SOLD OUT) and the crowd was really into it, dancing and throwing their arms in the air, clapping. I've never seen an LA crowd like this. It was close to an hour and 45 minutes off of smiles and good cheers. If you see them here again, DOn't miss out. THE CAT EMPIRE DELIVERS!

  • Infectious energy.

by Borsaw on 11/3/09Commodore Ballroom - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

With the way music is going these days, it is refreshing to see a band who has musical talent in their blood. They were playing for the fun of it not the money, each member plays at least two different instruments. Was non stop energy the whole time!!!
