About

The Cat Empire is a genre-defying ensemble that formed in Melbourne, Australia, in 1999. Blending ska, jazz, rocksteady, and hip-hop, the six-piece produces a wildly eclectic sound and live show that has toured worldwide, from major festivals like Glastonbury to making buzzworthy appearances on the Late Show with David Letterman and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. The Cat Empire has produced multiple No. 1 albums in Australia, including Two Shoes (2005) and Rising with the Sun (2016). After announcing their decision to disband in 2021, a refreshed lineup was announced in July 2023 led by original members Ollie McGill and Felix Riebl with the additions of Grace Barbé on bass, Daniel Farrugia on drums, Neda Rahmani on percussion and Lazaro Numa on trumpet. On August 25, The Cat Empire released their ninth studio album, Where The Angels Fall, with a supporting world tour scheduled for the fall.

  • Cat Empire Terrific

by JAMO7 on 6/29/13The Fillmore Silver Spring - Silver SpringRating: 5 out of 5

Cat Empire is a band on the way up. Varied but infectious rhythms, exciting horn section, great singing, and wonderful tunes. They grabbed the audience from the beginning and had it dancing the whole night.

  • Amazing show...kept everyone dancing and moving!

by DubHan on 6/29/13The Fillmore Silver Spring - Silver SpringRating: 5 out of 5

Had high expectations and The Cat Empire did not disappoint! We traveled from Miami to see them at closest place in DC, and it was definitely worth it! VIP seating at The Filmore was also worth the extra...no crowd, room to move, great view...

by CatLoverLady on 4/2/12Métropolis - MontrealRating: 5 out of 5

Literally the most fun that is possible will be had at a Cat Empire show. So many instruments, so much talent, and what a groovy shake ya booty kind of time. Pure brilliance and dreamy hunky musicians.

The Cat Empire was amazing, and I can't wait until they return to NYC! Their set was a nice mix of old and new songs, with a couple of favorites thrown in.

Great show. They are are gypsys of our times. It is always an escape, hearing the percussion strum your heart and move your feet.

  • LONG LIVE THE CAT EMPIRE

    by hdg04001 on 3/25/12Royale Boston - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

I've been to many, many concerts and I can honestly say this is likely the best live performance I've ever seen--they were fantastic! From the moment they began playing I couldn't wipe the cheshire cat grin off my face, and it was a LONG & energetic set. We couldn't help but dance straight through EVERY song. The entire band was spot-on, I was expecting a great show but this was beyond my expectations. The Cat Empire delivers exactly what you'd hope for with complete & utter satisfaction, through & through. I'm kind of a sap, but I just about cried tears of joy during their encore of "The Chariot". SEE THIS BAND LIVE.

i've seen cat empire every time they hit the east coast of the U.S. for a few years now, and every. single. time they impress me. they take the songs off their albums and jam them out into a crazy fun dance party. wonderful show.

  • Cat Empire Rocks even with overzealous audio tech

by PuraVidaWTW on 3/24/12Royale Boston - BostonRating: 4 out of 5

Great show by a great band. Eclectic audience to match an incredibly diverse musical act. As a big fan of TCE I enjoyed the show. Only complaint is the audio was turned up to the point of distortion. Even painfully loud on certain riffs when all of the band was cranking. Would definitely see them again and highly recommend you catch The Cat Empire if you can!

  • by Anonymous on 3/24/12Royale Boston - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

The Cat Empire has always put on a great show, in my opinion. I love the music on their albums as well, but the shows are just so amazingly dynamic, you simply have to experience it for yourself. The various break downs in songs where the whole band responds to a single member's lead just exemplifies the talent and musicality of all its members. Again, great time.

  • EPIC!!!

Incredible performance! Best live act I've ever attended!

  • by Anonymous on 3/24/12Royale Boston - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

Amazing Show! I didn't know this band, and the live music was just awesome!

  • Cat Empire Astonishes again

by mattrury on 3/24/12Royale Boston - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

This band is INCREDIBLE. I see them every time they come to Boston but they need to come more often! Or maybe I will go to Australia...

  • Always a fun time

by JustACatEmpireFan on 3/24/12Royale Boston - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

The Cat Empire has always made some of my favorite music because it's fun even when it's serious. They're a hundred times bigger in concert than they are in their recorded music.

  • Outstanding band

by nicknamenick on 3/24/12Royale Boston - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

Cat Empire is an amazing band. Very talented and inspiring musicians! The only major problem I had with this event was the timing. Not only that there was an opening act which was not mentioned in the event, but this did not start until after 9:00 and played for a full hour. In short, the show I paid for started after 10:00. With more than an hour drive back home ahead of me, I had to leave before the show was over.
