About

The Cat Empire is a genre-defying ensemble that formed in Melbourne, Australia, in 1999. Blending ska, jazz, rocksteady, and hip-hop, the six-piece produces a wildly eclectic sound and live show that has toured worldwide, from major festivals like Glastonbury to making buzzworthy appearances on the Late Show with David Letterman and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. The Cat Empire has produced multiple No. 1 albums in Australia, including Two Shoes (2005) and Rising with the Sun (2016). After announcing their decision to disband in 2021, a refreshed lineup was announced in July 2023 led by original members Ollie McGill and Felix Riebl with the additions of Grace Barbé on bass, Daniel Farrugia on drums, Neda Rahmani on percussion and Lazaro Numa on trumpet. On August 25, The Cat Empire released their ninth studio album, Where The Angels Fall, with a supporting world tour scheduled for the fall.

  • FANTASTIC SHOW

    by Annie B on 10/22/23Rating: 5 out of 5

Went in not having ever heard of them. It was a gorgeous night for a show at NC’s best venue, Greenfield Lake Amphitheater. I was given two tickets so I went with my 35yr old son. All I can say is WOW!! This band was fantastic. They play funk, jazz, ska, and are master musicians! They are high energy and so entertaining! We had so much fun! They have gained two fans! If you get a chance to see these guys live, don’t miss it!

  • Best Concert Ever! What a vibe

by Rebe on 10/22/23Culture Room - Ft LauderdaleRating: 5 out of 5

This is the best live band. Such good energy, incredible musicians, such a good time, the best music. Was nervous because the band has changed so much, but they still got it! Exceeded expectations!

  • Peace, Love, & The CAT EMPIRE, don't miss this band

by Katie on 10/22/23Culture Room - Ft LauderdaleRating: 5 out of 5

Don't miss this show. You don't know when you will get this chance again. Take all your friends. They are the best live band and very undiscovered in the USA. I am a Cat Empire fan. I felt like the luckiest person alive when I got to enjoy the show at the Culture Club in Ft. Lauderdale. All the way from Australia, here, ...bringing their energy, fun party vibe, happiness, and full sound. I walked out trying to figure out how I could catch one more show. This band, belongs on stage. They tell stories with their songs, like Jimmy Buffett, they are a performance band, like Queen, the stage can be big or small, they don't need any fancy pyrotechnics, Felix and his crazy talented band are going to suck you in and transport you, to a place of joy. There were a lot of people in the audience that had been waiting our whole lives for this night. If you are a Cat Empire fan, and had any concern about the new Cat Empire troupe or how they may have down sized to travel to the United States, to be on a smaller stage, taking down, and setting up, new city every night...do not worry. The songs were bigger then the album recordings. You will love it! If you want to be uplifted, free, and unbelievably happy, even if you have never heard of THE CAT EMPIRE, go to this concert. Appropriate and enjoyed by all ages. College party atmosphere, Yes! Sophisticated musical interludes, yes! And percussion, oh my! The gentleman next to me was not familiar with The Cat Empire, as we were leaving he was telling the folks he came, "best rock band ever". YES they are. Here and there, I think everyone finds something a little familiar in the Cat Empire music, a chord, or a few measures, but then it will segue way into something exclusive, to that next bridge, that next connection, and there is nothing like it. Nothing like you have ever experienced before. It is transcending. Peace, love, & The Cat Empire.

  • Funky, Groovy, High Energy

by GatoEmpire on 10/22/23Culture Room - Ft LauderdaleRating: 5 out of 5

The Cat Empire is a hidden gem band. I almost don’t want to give them such a good review as to not spoil it for myself and other fans who know this Australia based group. When I saw they were in the US, I purchased without hesitation. Not only are their songs catchy, but the amount of energy and crowd engagement in the show truly makes it seem like every show is special. Fun covers, groovy originals, and lots of heart and soul. Highly recommend to anyone!

  • Lively and a blast

by Alexandra on 10/22/23Ponte Vedra Concert Hall - Ponte Vedra BeachRating: 5 out of 5

This was the most fun at a concert I’ve ever had. It was lively and filled with a crowd of non-judgmental folks just rocking out to this absolutely amazing band. Between the incredible horn section and the most excited and fun I’ve ever seen out of a main singer. Felix was incredible up there. Ollie was rocking out that keyboard and was a freakin’ rockstar. I’ve never said I want to do this all over again before after a concert before this concert before but I had an absolute blast.

  • Best Live Show Ever!

    by T. J. on 3/28/19The Fillmore - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

TCE may be the best live performance I've ever seen/ participated in! They bring their songs alive and rev up the audience to keep people dancing. I'm addicted and will definitely see them again! The Fillmore was a perfect-sized venue for TCE - I think this is their 3rd time there. Last time they came mid-week and I opted out. Next time it could be on a Tuesday morning and I wouldn't care - I'd definitely come - and I'd bring more friends with me! Heck it was so much fun I might fly or drive to go see them again!

  • Please come to The U.S. more often!

by Jodenn on 3/26/19The Fillmore - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

They are a super talented super fun can not help but dance to band. They put on a great show and sound fantastic live. I have introduced them to all of my friends who didn’t already know who they were - and everyone loves them! So ya, buy ALL their music and go see them every chance you get!

  • Stunning as always!

by Deso on 3/26/19The Fillmore - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

Nobody puts on a show like these guys! 4th time seeing them...and to see them in such an iconic venue as the Fillmore, in a world class city like San Francisco...these guys create memories I will always cherish! Saw them in LA two days later (just as amazing) and planning to see them in Australia next year!

  • Greatest Monday ever

by FilipeO on 3/21/19Commodore Ballroom - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

These guys know how to put up a show! They rocked the Commodore Ballroom, making everyone dance and smile, almost forgot that it was a Monday! Great atmosphere.

  • Wanted more older music

    by J. T. on 3/20/19Commodore Ballroom - VancouverRating: 4 out of 5

I didn"t recognize nearly any of the music they played, which was disappointing. They play a helluva goid show, though, and the crowd loved them.

  • Absolutely fantastic!

by Mike on 3/16/19Burton Cummings Theatre - WinnipegRating: 5 out of 5

I’ve seen all but one of The Cat Empire’s Winnipeg shows, including every time they’ve played Winnipeg Folk Festival. Ever since the first time I heard their music, I have considered them one of my top 5 favourite bands ever! And they’re live shows are Absolutely Fantastic!!

Third time we traveled from the states to the Danforth for Cat Empire! Loved it except the volume was so loud it distorted their true quality...

This was my third time seeing the Cat Empire and equally amazing. I love this band and is rich in sound and personality. I decided to take a friend along to introduce him to the Cat experience. I am confident the cult following of this amazing band has a new following.

I have seen the Cat Empire three times and they are fantastic every time. The horns are great, the piano is awesome, the vocals are great. Great sound, great energy. Would recommend them to anyone.

  • by Bcats on 4/20/15Royale Boston - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

This was an amazing upbeat performance. The band was extremely energetic and they kept the crowd dancing the entire time. They have a unique mix of vocals and instruments that allow the live show to be unpredictable in the best way possible!

by Jaxo on 4/19/15Royale Boston - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

Hands down the best show I've EVER gone to, and I've been to a lot of shows. The energy level was alive with a positiveness that was truly contagious. It's 3 days later and I still have an after show glow!

  • Cat Empire Royale

by WalthamMusicFan on 4/19/15Royale Boston - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

Incredible band, great performance! They rocked the Royale. I saw them in Montreal 2 years ago at the jazz fest but this was a much more intimate setting. Can't wait for them to return to Boston.
