About

The Cat Empire is a genre-defying ensemble that formed in Melbourne, Australia, in 1999. Blending ska, jazz, rocksteady, and hip-hop, the six-piece produces a wildly eclectic sound and live show that has toured worldwide, from major festivals like Glastonbury to making buzzworthy appearances on the Late Show with David Letterman and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. The Cat Empire has produced multiple No. 1 albums in Australia, including Two Shoes (2005) and Rising with the Sun (2016). After announcing their decision to disband in 2021, a refreshed lineup was announced in July 2023 led by original members Ollie McGill and Felix Riebl with the additions of Grace Barbé on bass, Daniel Farrugia on drums, Neda Rahmani on percussion and Lazaro Numa on trumpet. On August 25, The Cat Empire released their ninth studio album, Where The Angels Fall, with a supporting world tour scheduled for the fall.

Been a Cat Empire fan since 2006. Live when they finally come to New England. High energy, fun, tight playing, they leave it all out on the stage. Big party, fun band with meaningful and thoughtful songs

  • Best concert ever. Period.

by Brian in Pitt on 11/24/23Commodore Ballroom - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

The Cat Empire are simply just awesome!!! I have been following them for about 6 years and this is the first time I have seen them live. I was nervous. Some bands don't transfer their studio sound well to stage (Volbeat) but the Cat Empre did not disappoint! And, the energy was electrifying! From the drum line through the crowd at western Canada's best venue, the iconic Comadore Ballroom, to the antics, and quick on the go mid song instrument changes, the loud synchronized drumming, and percusion, booming brass line and some of the best keyboards ever, Felix and his new crew have rissen to another level. Honestly, my wife and I feel it's the best concert we have ever experienced. 🥳👏🎉👑🎸🎹🎺🥁🪘🪇 We danced the night away! When they come back we're taking the whole family.

  • We are Cat Empire Newbies — Awesome Show!!

by Tumblingdice on 11/24/23Commodore Ballroom - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

My husband and I knew Steph Strings and admittedly, we went to see her again because we had enjoyed her so much the first time. Although we had never seen Cat Empire or were familiar with their music, we were really looking forward to seeing them as the reviews were amazing. All I can say is they did not disappoint. It was one big dance fest (Commodore Ballroom is the perfect place for that!) and everyone around us clearly followed the band, knew every word of the songs and thus, it was contagious. Would go to see them again in a Cat Empire heart-beat. So talented all of them and so FUN!

It was my first time seeing their live performance and was an amazing show I ever had!

  • The show is in my Top-3

by Nata S on 11/18/23The Observatory - Santa AnaRating: 5 out of 5

The Cat Empire is one of the best live bands ever. A smaller size venue made the show more intimate, which is great.

  • What great energy!

by KP on 11/16/23The Depot - Salt Lake CityRating: 5 out of 5

The Cat Empire knows how to get/keep a crowd moving. They had a personal connection with us and shared just enough personal info w/o taking away from the music.

  • Best This Year

by Jeff on 11/15/23The Depot - Salt Lake CityRating: 5 out of 5

This is, without a doubt, the best concert I have been to this year. There were very few "thrills". The excitement came from the energy and talent of the band. A lot of concerts rely on fancy lights, lasers, fire, etc. But The Cat Empire had the basic sound and light setup. It was easy to tell how fantastic the show was by looking at the crowd. There is always the dancing people in the first 25% of a crowd and the energy slowly fades as you go back into the crowd. But I swear the first 75% of the crowd was dancing. There were only a handful of the crowd not having an absolute blast. I hope The Cat Empire comes back to SLC soon. I will definitely go again.

  • High energy with great crowd work

by Tattedtoorude on 11/15/23The Depot - Salt Lake CityRating: 5 out of 5

I was pleasantly impressed with the show that was put on by the Cat Empire. The first came out and did a drum line in the crowd, what a great way to pull the audience in. Then played a great sent and with a lot of heart felt meaning behind their songs. The stories Felix shared about his brothers passing, how the bad was formed back in the day, and the meaning of music for him really made the experience. I hope in the future that The Cat Empire plays more in the USA because it was a welcome addition of funk, jazz, salsa, and just overall unique music that is needed.

  • The Cat came back!

by Darci on 11/8/23History - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

I will always buy a ticket to see The Cat Empire. The energy they create anywhere they play is something I don’t see at other concerts. Why aren’t the shows sold out? People here just don’t know about them. Their music varies in style, bringing an interesting crowd out to History. I went alone and had an amazing time.

  • Best show off my life

by Jake on 11/5/23MTELUS - MontrealRating: 5 out of 5

Band is so heartful, only play hits, make people dance.

  • Fantastic! Joyous! FUN!

by Clint on 11/5/23MTELUS - MontrealRating: 5 out of 5

This was one of the greatest shows I’ve ever seen, and I’ve seen many over many years. The band is great, of course, and the music is wonderful. But it’s even more: the band connects deeply with the crowd and the crowd responds. There is joy, vitality and happiness flowing and pulsating through the room, and it feels profound and shared. What a splendid night! Do not miss this!!

  • Incredible & Epic Show!!

Have been a fan since around 2011 but this is the first time I saw The Cat Empire live. Superb. Kept the energy high and the crowd alive throughout. Cannot wait for the next time.

  • A Fantastic Return to US tour Cat Empire

by BlackCat Raven on 10/26/23Ponte Vedra Concert Hall - Ponte Vedra BeachRating: 5 out of 5

The Cat Empire put on a great, energy fulled show with horns, keys, drums, lots of percussion and singing. I saw that they were touring the US again and only 4 hrs from me so there was no hesitation to buy tickets. It started with the band walking in marching band style. The energy stayed high for the whole show with all the driving percussion and keyboard beats. I could tell the band members have a great stage relationship. I only bought 2 drinks for the whole night because I didn't want to miss any of the songs.

  • Amazing band Wonderful

by Rosie on 10/26/23Ponte Vedra Concert Hall - Ponte Vedra BeachRating: 5 out of 5

They have the best stage presence and know how to get even a quiet and shy crowd to get up and dancing. They put on an amazing show, and the bands new vibe is great. They are back at the top of their game!! Very cute venue as well

  • Words are not enough!

by SS on 10/24/23Culture Room - Ft LauderdaleRating: 5 out of 5

Simply amazing! The opening band was an added treat. The Cat Empire is a talented and highly skilled band and I can’t wait to see them again.

  • What a band and show!!! Cat Empire, phenom!

by David S on 10/23/23Ponte Vedra Concert Hall - Ponte Vedra BeachRating: 5 out of 5

I am SOOOOO happy I got to see Cat Empire. And in a not so huge venue, got to be close to the stage. Danced and danced. They really connect to their audience, totally from the heart and beautiful, substantive, and lively fun music. Cat Empire Rocks!!! Finally got to see them, a dream fulfilled, really.

  • LOVE THIS BAND!!

by SMarcelin on 10/23/23Culture Room - Ft LauderdaleRating: 5 out of 5

If you've never heard of Australian band, The Cat Empire, please check them out! They are amazing live, and have a 20-year catalog of eclectic tunes that range from ska to reggae to Soca to big band. They cover it all and do it with incredible energy that is infectious. I'm not a huge fan of Culture Room in Ft. Lauderdale because of the height of the stage (it's a neck-breaker to watch an entire show looking up), but the staff is great and once they got the lead singer's mic working, the sound was great. Definitely add Cat Empire to your playlists.
