About

SUZANNE VEGA IN CONCERT:

In the late '80s, singer-songwriter Suzanne Vega carved a small but potent niche for herself with a relaxed, poetic brand of alt-pop. Nuanced, witty songs like "Tom's Diner" and "Luka" drew heavily on folk traditions, earning her popularity in alternative circles that she continues to enjoy today. A humble, genuine performer, Vega's soothing voice and smart songwriting will be front and center as she embarks on a 2014 tour in support of her eighth studio album Tales from the Real of the Queen of Pentacles.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

LA-born, New York-raised Suzanne Vega was a precocious young talent, beginning to write poetry at age nine and penning her first song by age 14. While majoring in literature at Bard College, she frequently traveled to Manhattan to perform in small venues and participate in the songwriter cooperative Fast Folk. She became one of the first artists from the Fast Folk family to make it big when she landed a major label contract in 1984, releasing her self-titled debut a year later. The album was a critical and commercial success, setting the stage for a string of acclaimed releases that included Solitude Standing (1987) and Days of Open Hand (1990). On the road in 2014 in support of her eighth album, fans can expect to hear some much-awaited new material alongside favorites like "Tom's Diner" and "In Liverpool."

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"Suzanne is an amazing performer; she is so personable and comfortable with her audience. I almost felt like she was in my living room. Her voice continues to be strong and unique; she hasn't aged at all.”

"Suzanne has definitely got stamina...she took no breaks, her voice was remarkable, and her story-telling added to the enjoyment. She gave a walk down memory lane encore (Luka, Tom's Diner, Calypso, + one other) and played the guitar with energy."

"Incredible show. Once again Suzanne Vega impressed with her simple poetic lyrics and quirky folk/rock/pop. Her guitarist is amazing!"

    Suzanne!

by CheckerD on 2/23/15Fred Kavli Theatre-Thousand Oaks Civic Arts - Thousand Oaks

I have seen Suzanne once before many years ago when she appeared with Marshal Crenshaw. I thought that show was good. This show completely knocked my socks off. Her vocal quality, musicianship, stage presence and engagement with the audience was real and funny. It seemed at times like she was singing to me. Her songs are so visceral and poignant. She is truly a treasure for our time. Her vocals were amazing and lilting coupled with her poetic verse makes you wonder if she isn't a troubadour from another age that has come back around to remind us in a wistful, playful manner of our human triumphs and follies. This concert reminds me why I so love Suzanne Vega as a person and an artist. Here accompanying guitarist was fantastic and of course quintessentially Irish. Bravo Suzanne and Jerry!

    Great interaction with audience

by Syntych on 2/23/15Fred Kavli Theatre-Thousand Oaks Civic Arts - Thousand Oaks

She is original and a very talented lyrics and music composer. Her songs have actual meaning. It's a treat to hear an artist be genuine to herself and the craft. A couple constructive criticisms: I was wondering if smaller theatre would have been a wiser choice for venue to allow it to feel more intimate for the folks in the back rows. I was told she was coming out to sign CDs which is lovely but I don't know if that happened. It was late and I tired of waiting so I left. Back to the most important things: She has presence and doesn't need special lights or multiple artists. It was simply her and the electric guitarist. I believe they had the rest of the sound managed in the sound booth. Simplicity works when music is awesome. Her guitar oddly was putting an unexpected show on the walls. Light reflected from the end of the guitar and cast a sort of magical twinkling pattern of light almost like a chandelier. I'm sure she had no idea but it was beautiful

    Suzanne is poetic

by xoxodl on 10/20/14Charline McCombs Empire Theatre - San Antonio

The Charline McCombs Theater was perfect for this intimate concert. I saw Suzanne Vega 26 years ago at the Sunken Gardens and she was fabulous. She still is fabulous, talented, and poetic.

Very nice show for being just her and the other guitarist guy. She even took some requests.

    Not what I expected

    by Adhl4321 on 5/12/14Birchmere - Alexandria

I have listened to Suzanne Vega albums for years but this was my first live concert. I asked friends to join me, noting her beautiful voice and most of all, the story-telling and poetry of her songs. I expected mostly an acoustic show. Many of her songs were drowned out by the electric guitar that accompanied her. Those songs with acoustic guitars were best. My friends all said they couldn't understand her words, which pretty much defeated the point. I had to listen to her albums again the next day to remind me why I find her music compelling, but I would hesitate to go to a show again.

    Suzanne and Ari

by LDVirginia on 5/12/14Birchmere - Alexandria

Ari Hest combines his lyrics and music so well. I love his style. He's such a talented singer/songwriter. Suzanne still has a beautiful voice and continues to play and sing so well. The two of them touring together blend memories from the past with new music for today.

    Suzanne Vega rocked the Birchmiere!

by Happyatlast on 5/12/14Birchmere - Alexandria

What an amazing singer and entertainer. Her personality shines as she takes the stage and while she starts out slow and steady by the end she had us all bouncing out of our seats. I was recently introduced to her music and am now a fan and hope to see her back at he the Birchmeire as she said, in a year from now.

Great show but very poor venue

by trrll on 5/5/14The Sinclair - Cambridge

Great show by Suzanne Vega, but I wish it was in a better venue. Few places to sit down, glaring lights in audience's face.

There is never a bad show. There was just Suzanne and a guitarist. An amazing amount of music came from them. The Sinclair was interesting, beautiful decor for just a big room.

    Vega in DC

by DCchuck on 3/8/13Sixth & I Historic Synagogue - Washington

Always a great performance! Gerry (the lead guitarist) is being featured more prominently in this tour and rightly so. Her voice and finger work is unmatched by contemporary artists.

    Gets better. With age

    by MRP93 on 3/8/13Sixth & I Historic Synagogue - Washington

After. All these years I was not sure Ms. Vega's songs would still speak to the teenager inside who had first heard them. They did and more: deeper appreciation of lyrical whims, understanding of raw unprotected emotion, and wit, lots of wit. Thanks so much for a wonderful concert
