Ms. Jones settles into some American Classics
by Cathy on 5/24/23Ludlow Garage Cincinnati - CincinnatiPeople who showed up hoping for a rehash of her old hits were doubtless disappointed. This was the fifth time I've seen Ms. Jones in concert, and I'm familiar with her recent recording. I came to this show understanding what it would be; Ms. Jones singing (mostly) American classics, jazz, and torch songs. I was not disappointed. It was exactly what I expected. Because of my experiences with her previous concerts, I expected a few flubs, maybe a song restart or two, and that no matter what, Ms. Jones never sounds like her produced/polished albums. She finds her own time, when she's live. She reinterprets her music more than simply performs it. Her voice works perfectly for the classic songs she chose. Her delivery is wonderful, with her mature voice a bit warmer than it used to be. She performed a few treats from her older work, and ended the show with a rousing version of Danny's All-Star Joint. The only downside to the show was that it was her first night of this new tour, and the band is still melding. Their flubs were a bit annoying, but I'm sure they'll sort it out as the tour continues. Don't expect to hear many of her older songs on this tour. Give her new album, Pieces of Treasure, a listen before you go. If you love Ms. Jones or American standards, you'll enjoy your evening. She's my very favorite. She's been the soundtrack of my life for forty years. I love that her performances are a bit quirky.
