SUZANNE VEGA IN CONCERT:
In the late '80s, singer-songwriter Suzanne Vega carved a small but potent niche for herself with a relaxed, poetic brand of alt-pop. Nuanced, witty songs like "Tom's Diner" and "Luka" drew heavily on folk traditions, earning her popularity in alternative circles that she continues to enjoy today. A humble, genuine performer, Vega's soothing voice and smart songwriting will be front and center as she embarks on a 2014 tour in support of her eighth studio album Tales from the Real of the Queen of Pentacles.
BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
LA-born, New York-raised Suzanne Vega was a precocious young talent, beginning to write poetry at age nine and penning her first song by age 14. While majoring in literature at Bard College, she frequently traveled to Manhattan to perform in small venues and participate in the songwriter cooperative Fast Folk. She became one of the first artists from the Fast Folk family to make it big when she landed a major label contract in 1984, releasing her self-titled debut a year later. The album was a critical and commercial success, setting the stage for a string of acclaimed releases that included Solitude Standing (1987) and Days of Open Hand (1990). On the road in 2014 in support of her eighth album, fans can expect to hear some much-awaited new material alongside favorites like "Tom's Diner" and "In Liverpool."
FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:
"Suzanne is an amazing performer; she is so personable and comfortable with her audience. I almost felt like she was in my living room. Her voice continues to be strong and unique; she hasn't aged at all.”
"Suzanne has definitely got stamina...she took no breaks, her voice was remarkable, and her story-telling added to the enjoyment. She gave a walk down memory lane encore (Luka, Tom's Diner, Calypso, + one other) and played the guitar with energy."
"Incredible show. Once again Suzanne Vega impressed with her simple poetic lyrics and quirky folk/rock/pop. Her guitarist is amazing!"
This was my 1st live show ever and it was spectacular. Suzanne vega was wonderful.
Suzanne Vega is a wonderful Singer/Songwriter, and the decades haven't dulled her voice. She is very personable, and the intimate venue made it feel like I was with an old friend. Also, The Colonial theater has (thankfully) upgraded the seats and sound system from when I was last there.
The concert was more than I’d hoped for. It was intimate and personal.
I got turned on to Suzanne Vega about two years ago. I listened to and liked Solitary Standing when it came out years ago but lost track of what she did after that. She is now one of my favorite artists. Her voice is still great. She was very personable at the show, telling stories about where some of her songs came from. I knew every song she sang and all the lyrics. Suzanne may not enjoy the comparison, but I think she is the closest thing to Joni Mitchell in my lifetime. Her songs have the lyrical quality of Joni with better melodies and rhythms. Definitely underappreciated by the masses. If she comes to my area again, I will be there.
I've been a fan since the 90s and was simply blown away by how silky and sultry Suzanne Vega's voice is to this day. I loved the story telling and hope to get the chance to see her again soon. I couldn't give this a higher recommendation.
I love small venue shows!!! The Colonial Theater is a piece of history!! Suzanne was warm and funny and an amazing presence! Great show for fans of the few story tellers we have left
Getting to see Suzanne Vega live, finally, was such a treat! The combination of great music and interesting and humorous stories in an intimate venue was outstanding. I hope to get to see her again sometime!
Suzanne Vega put on an amazing, intimate and personal show. Her voice is entrancing and one of a kind. The Colonial is a gorgeous theater over 100 years old which means the balcony seats, unfortunately, are incredibly narrow with extremely limited space for your legs. It was impossible for me, as a size US18, 5'7" woman to sit in the seat I'd bought without being in pain. Fortunately, the volunteers were incredibly gracious and allowed us to move to some unclaimed seats in another section with more space. If you're thicker in the hips or taller, you MUST get tickets on the ground floor.
It was terrific, except for the sound was poor. many times we couldn't make out the lyrics.
A small intimate 120 year old theater that seats 658 and has balcony seating. Ms. Vega didn't not disappoint. Excellent sound.
Suzanne Vega is a great storyteller and she does it through words and songs. The quitarist that accompanied her added interest and mood to the music. The Vogel was the perfect Venue for this kind of concert.Myself,my wife, and friends we went with all enjoyed the show.
I’ve been a fan of Suzanne Vega for many years but I was not able to see her live until now. I thought her performance was wonderful. Her voice was good, her playing (acoustic) and that of her electric guitar player (the only other player) were excellent. She really connected to the audience with her stories and singing, an engaging performance. I look forward to seeing her again. The venue, Vogel Center at Count Basie Theater, Red Bank, NJ, is very good, 1st time here. It’s a cross between the Rams Head in Annapolis and the Musikfest Cafe in Bethlehem, PA. Like the Rams Head, it could use one less seat per table side, but it was better than a standing room GA mosh pit! Relatively reasonable refreshments available, I will see another show here hopefully.
This was a rather intimate event at the Vogel in Red Bank. The Vogel does have a stage but is set up with tables, and is a rather small theater, so the performer can be closer to the audience than usual. Suzanne played old songs and new, and recounted the genesis of several favorite songs. Her voice was in great form, quite flawless and amazing! Kudos to the accompanist (do not remember his name sorry, but he is Irish, and very, very good on the guitar, drum and loop machine), he was excellent as well! There was an encore due to the enthusiastic crowd, and this segment was well thought out as well, and wonderful.
After waiting more than 30 years to see her, the experience was so wonderful that I might see her again next month. There aren't enough superlatives to describe how delightful she and Gerry Leonard are as a duo. Her voice and lyrics are a national treasure.
I've seen Vega many times but after the solitude and quietude imposed by COVID it was so wonderful that SV was my first live performance in almost two years. She was astounding, engaging, and a troubadour in the fullest sense of the word. I brought a friend who was unfamiliar with SV and now she's hooked, too. Seeing the concert in The Vogel, which is a new, hip, intimate music venue associated with the Count Basie, was also special. I highly recommend the performer and the performance space.
This venue was totally magnificent to watch a concert. It had a very personal feel to it. Can’t wait to go there again.
The show was great. She performed with an accompanying guitarist and their two guitars created a great sound. Her voice was perfect and it was a well thought out set. I have waited 35 years to see her live and the experience did not disappoint!
Wonderful! Vega sounds just as good and is even funnier than she was in the 80s. It was an ideal combination of classic and new work. I’ve grown up and am growing old to her music. What a gift!
Loved the venue!! We all wished we could have bought a Tshirt! I have a Suzanne Vega sweatshirt from the 90’s!!
A lovely intimate evening. We thoroughly enjoyed all the old hits as well as the less familiar numbers. Great balance of musicianship and good natured banter. We had a great time.
