Stephen Stills Should Retire
by ReedG on 5/23/18The Rose - PasadenaRating: 1 out of 5I don’t know whether Stephen Stills had some medical or other issue, but he seemed impaired to me. His singing was tentative and weak, and his guitar playing was filled with missed chords and dissonant notes in many of the solos. At times I thought I was listening to a teenage garage band. I was amazed that Stills did not have a strong side man guitarist to handle the parts he seems no longer able to pull off without making a ton of mistakes. With Judy Collins as the band’s rhythm guitarist, it was a weak guitar section playing songs that were very guitar oriented. His band had top level professionals on drums, bass and keyboards, but without a strong guitar section the overall result was very unprofessional, obviously well below the level you would expect from an icon like Stephen Stills.
I also did not appreciate the “political activism” tone of the show, although the bulk of the audience seemed not to mind, which is not surprising given the venue. Judy Collins did a long a capella song about illegal (undocumented) immigrants, and Stills prominently featured his sixties protest song “For What it’s Worth”. Both were talking throughout the show as though we were back in the late sixties and should all be in full-on protest mode. I fully realize that many, perhaps most, in the audience may be sympathetic to this view, but many are not. I can overlook an occasional reference to a political issue, but a show can be ruined for me if political views that I do not share (or for that matter, views that I do share) are constantly injected, It amazes me that so many artists are willing to risk alienating a significant portion of their audiences by injectng politics into their shows.
I think that if the music had been performed competently I would have enjoyed the show overall, being mildly annoyed by the continual political references. However, the combination of poor execution of the music and the excessive political tone was too much. I almost walked out and was glad when it was over. I felt like I wasted my time and money that night.
