About

Sporting Kansas City History

Sporting Kansas City has the honor of being one of the original franchises of Major League Soccer, first kicking off in 1996 as the Kansas City Wiz. A year later, the name changed to the Kansas City Wizards, which remained in use until the end of the 2010 season.

The Wiz/Wizards/Sporting KC were founded by Lamar Hunt, who owned the Kansas City Chiefs of the NFL. Hunt also helped to create Major League Soccer, the American Football League, and the United Soccer Association of the '60s, and his Hunt Sports Group owned the Wizards until shortly before he died in 2006.

Kansas City's MLS franchise has been home to some of the greatest names in American and international soccer, including Alexi Lalas, Tony Meola, Preki and Matt Besler. They have had a sustained period of achievement under former Wizards player and 2000 MLS Defender of the Year Peter Vermes, who has coached the team since 2009.

Sporting KC have claimed the MLS Cup in 2000 and 2013, a Supporters’ Shield in 2000 and four U.S. Open Cup titles (2004, 2012, 2015, and 2017). In 2023, Kansas City reached the Conference Semifinals of the MLS Cup Playoffs.

    Opening Night for Sporting KC

by Kumquat01 on 6/13/11LIVESTRONG Sporting Park - Kansas City

$110 for two tickets and I felt totally left out of the food/bar/socialization world at the stadium. Spent an additional $75 (!) on food and drink. Seemed that everyone else had a bar that that they could walk into and socialize except us. We had to walk completely around the stadium just to find a bar that sold cocktails or to grab something to eat. Really unhappy about that. In your efforts to make sure that certain types of ticketholders felt like they had an exclusive experience, your forgot about us folks that paid a LOT of money to come to the stadium. I would expect this type of experience for a $25 ticket but not a $55 ticket. Seemed that everywhere you looked folks were in private areas or at LEAST had a bar they could join in the celebration if they chose. The stadium itself is awesome and the game was exciting but I have a bad taste in my mouth. Note: increase the size of the hotdogs for heaven's sake...they were ridiculously small. Loved the various types of bbq sauce. nice idea. Increase the size of the cocktail glassware by at least 2 ounces. Folks that was unbelievably small for $8.75. Seriously for being involved with a NFP foundation, you sure found ways to gig us.

Good sight lines everywhere. Good sound system and video boards. Seats were comfortable. Good value on ticket. Didn't go into all the clubs and special places. Need traffic control inside the legends side of things and not just on State Avenue for after the game.

    Sporting KC vs. Chicago Fire

by Sundancer1129 on 6/12/11LIVESTRONG Sporting Park - Kansas City

Beautiful stadium. Great atmosphere. Will definitely get seats instead of bleachers next time. People in bleachers threw streamers on the field and lit smoke bombs under the seats. Contantly drummed and stood up during the entire game. It was hard to see the field because of the spectators standing up the entire game. Left at halftime. Would definitely attend another game if I get seats instead of bleachers.

    Home Opener

by EPumas on 6/12/11LIVESTRONG Sporting Park - Kansas City

The home opener was great for Sporting KC. The stadium was fantastic. There was a lot of hype about pregame activities that were pretty disappointing. We expected the vendors/concessionaries to really be out there and the band to be fantastic. It was more like a community event type preparation. Also, there wasn't as much catering to the fans as there was in the Community America Ballpark or even when the team played at Arrowhead. Purchasing better seats did not get you better parking, either. It seemed like a lot went into building the stadium, but the details that makes the whole experience great weren't there. As for the game, it was a great game. It was great to finally see Sporting KC back in the Kansas City area. It was so great to see the people of Kansas City supporting the home team and having them in their own stadium. We also loved seeing Lance Armstrong there to welcome everyone. The game was fantastic! We are supporters of Sporting KC, and the players.

    KC Sporting VS Chicago Fire

by sakorick on 6/12/11LIVESTRONG Sporting Park - Kansas City

The venue is fabulous, the food and drinks are great, the pregame show was awesome and the game itself stunk. The seat location was perfect.....midfield, seven rows back.

Incredible stadium, great seat, awesome experience

by Oubrave14 on 6/11/11LIVESTRONG Sporting Park - Kansas City

Livestrong Sporting Park was as good as advertised. Has all the amenities of a modern stadium with plenty of food and drink options along with shops and kiosks to purchase memorabilia. I purchased a seat in the Cauldron or the supporters section. There wasn't a bad seat in the section, it had the atmosphere of a true European soccer match. I will definitely be attending several Sporting KC games in the future.

    AMAZING NIGHT!

by Rufhouse on 6/11/11LIVESTRONG Sporting Park - Kansas City

Sporting KC's inaugural home opener was incredible. The park is beautiful, the team is fantastic and the fans are... well FANATIC! We had such a great time. Would love it if the credit card machines were working so I could have purchased some SKC gear but otherwise it was a perfect night!

    Stadium and Seats were amazing!

by WorldSkater01 on 6/11/11LIVESTRONG Sporting Park - Kansas City

LIVESTRONG Sporting Park is a beautiful state of the art stadium that has plenty of amenities for the whole family. Free stadium WiFi, cell phone charging stations, variety of food stands, and many restrooms make it not only convenient but luxurious for even the cheapest seats. The atmosphere inside the stadium was awesome with large HD screens, there was not a bad seat in the house, even the SRO area had great views along the concourses. Overall, this is one of the nicest, most fan friendly stadiums ever. I highly recommend watching a Sporting Kansas City game at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park!

    Awesome Stadium. Great atmosphere.

by 96Triumph on 6/11/11LIVESTRONG Sporting Park - Kansas City

My family and I had a great evening. It was an edge of your seat game even though it ended in a draw. Can't wait to go back. It would have helped if Ticketmaster had been a little clearer about parking and parking passes.

Great stadium, beware the visitors' section!

by JGisme on 6/11/11LIVESTRONG Sporting Park - Kansas City

We were there for the opening match of LiveStrong Sporting Park, and the venue is fabulous. There were certainly some opening night hiccups, such as the computers being down at the shops. The facilities are top notch, and every seat in the house has a great view of the beautiful pitch. We plan on coming back! HOWEVER, our seats were in section 123 which, as it turns out, is partially reserved for the visiting team's fan club. The group in front of us seemed bent on keeping the fans around them from being able to enjoy the match or hear anything. After literally starting a fire before the match started, several of the rowdiest of the visitors were removed from the stadium. Still, those that remained were more determined to annoy Sporting fans and provoke conflict than they were to watch the match. I certainly wish that I had known about the visiting fans before buying tickets for my family. Ticketmaster ought to provide some warning before you buy tickets in or near section 123, but failing that, please consider carefully where you are getting tickets relative to the visitors before buying. I would not hesitate to return to the stadium for another match, but I am going to sit elsewhere.

Loved everything about it - the stadium, the atmosphere, the food, etc!!! Excellent Job!! The only thing I did not like was when the Cauldron started throwing bottles on the field - I thought that was very disrespectful and uncalled for even if the refs were incorrect in not making a call. I did, however, appreciate how the staff immediately ran out and cleaned them all up for the safety of the players. We will DEFINITELY be back for more games this summer. It is so fun to be a part of this growing organization:) Thank you!
