About

Sporting Kansas City History

Sporting Kansas City has the honor of being one of the original franchises of Major League Soccer, first kicking off in 1996 as the Kansas City Wiz. A year later, the name changed to the Kansas City Wizards, which remained in use until the end of the 2010 season.

The Wiz/Wizards/Sporting KC were founded by Lamar Hunt, who owned the Kansas City Chiefs of the NFL. Hunt also helped to create Major League Soccer, the American Football League, and the United Soccer Association of the '60s, and his Hunt Sports Group owned the Wizards until shortly before he died in 2006.

Kansas City's MLS franchise has been home to some of the greatest names in American and international soccer, including Alexi Lalas, Tony Meola, Preki and Matt Besler. They have had a sustained period of achievement under former Wizards player and 2000 MLS Defender of the Year Peter Vermes, who has coached the team since 2009.

Sporting KC have claimed the MLS Cup in 2000 and 2013, a Supporters’ Shield in 2000 and four U.S. Open Cup titles (2004, 2012, 2015, and 2017). In 2023, Kansas City reached the Conference Semifinals of the MLS Cup Playoffs.

    Sporting KC

by KUYF on 6/28/11LIVESTRONG Sporting Park - Kansas City

I had a really good time at the game and the new stadium is really nice and comfortable. For the price of a really bad baseball ticket i was able to sit in the third row center. the atmosphere was really charged and the team played well. After suffering through last year's game at the base ball stadium, I swore I would never go to that venue again. The opening of the new soccer specific stadium is really a great thing for KC.

    Great new stadium!

by ElTiburonnopare on 6/27/11LIVESTRONG Sporting Park - Kansas City

The atmosphere was great and the stadium is beautiful. It was very family friendly and I had a great time with the kids. The play is what you expect from the MLS but hey we've come a long way baby!

    Incredible game!

by SportingFan1234 on 6/27/11LIVESTRONG Sporting Park - Kansas City

The atmosphere at the game was fantastic. My friends and I were in section M and there wasn't a dull moment. I will definitely be going back. Also, apparel and food were priced fairly--especially for a stadium event.

    Sporting KC good time

by farfergnugen on 6/27/11LIVESTRONG Sporting Park - Kansas City

My second time at the new park and good level of excitement, almost on level with US National Team's game little over a week ago. Seats were great and view just as good as more expensive west stand ones. recommend sitting slightly toward midfield side of the box as close enough to goal to see scoring opps and yet near enough midfield to see plays develop on both ends.

Beautiful stadium, winning team, fun game. All that was missing was a better beer selection. Thanks Sporting KC!

    The best ticket in town.

A fantastic stadium, a great product, a great fan experience. Making plans to go again! The fans in the Cauldron make the atmosphere.

New stadium tremendous. If you love soccer it does not get any better than this.

by DukeofSturg on 6/27/11LIVESTRONG Sporting Park - Kansas City

The new stadium is wonderful. There doesn't seem to be a bad seat in the house. Concessions are everywhere and priced at what you would expect a professional level sporting event. (i.e. pretty expensive) Perfect angle for one end of the pitch. The far end was distant but the play was still perfectly viewable. The further back rows gave a more complete view of the field with elevation.

Fantastic venue. Gets warm inside and for some reason, venue will not allow an unopened bottle of water to be bought into the stadium. Come on now, this is being a little bit too cheap.

    Sporting KC

by MLSUSA on 6/25/11Livestrong Sporting Park - Kansas City

Awesome game. The stadium is gorgeous. Atmosphere is a lot of fun. Tickets are a respectable price. Ticketmaster does a terrible indicating which seats you are buying. They need to match their labeling system with the venue's. Hopefully they will fix that soon. Besides that amazing experience!

    Stellar

by Iraisetigers on 6/22/11LIVESTRONG Sporting Park - Kansas City

The freakin game was amazing. The member's club is off the hook. And the Cauldron is the best supporters group in the league. I will never sit anywhere but in the supporter's section.

    Sporting KC's stadium is awesome

by Lewm on 6/21/11LIVESTRONG Sporting Park - Kansas City

The new stadium is great and the soccer players seem excited to be playing at home. The website doesn't give you all the information you need to choose seats and doesn't mention that the club area sells beer for $4.50 instead of $7.75, but won't let you enter with a beer you bought elsewhere in the stadium. I think the fans still want them to be called the "Wizards" -- and that name really makes sense now that their home is in Kansas!

    Incredible stadium!

by SportingFan on 6/20/11LIVESTRONG Sporting Park - Kansas City

No bad sight lines, great food and reasonable-ish prices. All in all a very big fan so far. Keep is up OnGoal!

    Stadium is amazing

by Lage on 6/19/11LIVESTRONG Sporting Park - Kansas City

I only had an issue with buying my tickets online and showing up to the will call booth to find it was also for buying tickets. I waited in line for 30 min. to pick up tickets I had already paid for in advance. I chose to pick them up at will call because i figured there would be a section just for will call tickets. And I would like to add the parking went very smoothly for us even though we heard not-so-good things about the availability for parking.

The venue and game were great! Something everyone should GO. It is a beautiful stadium. Check in was stupid. The lines to purchase tickets and will call were the SAME. So why purchase ahead on the internet? Same wait! And behind those who couldn't' decide which tickets they wanted. Parking is confusing. No SIGNS except where NOT to park. There were people to direct you but they were trying to sort the baseball( scheduled at the same time??) from the soccer so everyone had to stop. No SIGNS for exits either. Concessions were OK.

    Livestrong Stadium / Sporting KC

by DaveandBuster on 6/19/11LIVESTRONG Sporting Park - Kansas City

Great venue, fantastic seats all around. Not a soccer fan before, but would go back again and again. Parking situation sucks a little but there was a baseball game on the same night which may have made it worse.
