San Jose Earthquakes History

The San Jose Earthquakes trace back to the San Jose Clash, one of the 10 original Major League Soccer teams. In a gesture honoring the long history of the city’s former NASL soccer franchise, the name changed to the Earthquakes by the end of the '90s.

The Earthquakes have won the MLS Cup twice, in 2001 and 2003. The team claimed their first Supporters’ Shield for the league’s best record in 2005, and earned their second in 2012 at the height of their “Goonies Era,” which has lived on in Quakes fan culture. The team's anthem, written by South Bay native and Rancid singer Lars Frederiksen, is "Never Say Die."

In 2023, the Earthquakes hired former San Jose forward Luchi Gonzalez as head coach. Gonzalez has adopted a style of play referred to as “Luchi Ball,” which emphasizes possession and counter-pressing, and the Earthquakes subsequently qualified for their first playoff berth since 2020.

San Jose Earthquakes at PayPal Park

In the early days of MLS, the Earthquakes played in San Jose State University's Spartan Stadium. Today they play in PayPal Park, a privately financed, soccer-specific stadium that features a player tracking system similar to the one used by the Quakes' Bay Area neighbors, the Golden State Warriors of the NBA.

Quakes fan culture developed heavily during the team’s mid-’10s “Goonies Era.” The team's anthem, written by South Bay native and Rancid singer Lars Frederiksen, is "Never Say Die" as a nod to The Goonies characters’ famous catchphrase.

No goals in two home games!

by Coachy on 3/12/24PayPal Park - San Jose

The stadium is absolutely awesome. Food and drink is great. The team needs to add at least three quality attacking players. 10 years in a row and no playoff appearances. This is why I gave up my four season tickets several years ago. I will probably not go to any more games. Will go to Bay FC games. Does the ownership really care?

    Great Game Day Experience

by Victor on 10/24/23PayPal Park - San Jose

The stadium has a very modern touch to it . The concourse is well designed. Restrooms are easy to find and they had fun activities for kids in the fan fest.

    1st MLS Experience

by O'Connor Family on 10/24/23PayPal Park - San Jose

Everything was perfect. The kids had fun and loved watching the game, visiting with teammates, and experiencing something for the first time, and are eager to make another game. However, the price of the food is way too high, and need a better variety of food. The apparel departments are extremely high in purchasing items.

    Great game, investment needed.

by Picaroto on 10/24/23PayPal Park - San Jose

This was a great game. Excellent effort by the players. The short coming of this team is obvious. Fisher does not invest in team as he has also failed to do with the A's. In it only for profit and doesn't really care about the team. New ownership is needed.

    Vouchers=no tickets

    by Marie on 10/22/23

While In San Jose a few weeks ago , we were lucky to receive 5 vouchers to the game on Oct 21. We were told we could pick up anytime during the week or GameDay. We arrived and were told they were sold out. I understood but showed them my vouchers for today's game. I was then told they aren't taking any more vouchers for the evening. I was taken back. I asked ,even if they're vouchers for tickets for tonight? She confirmed. I asked if they could be used for another game but unfortunately it was the last home game. I was upset as we don't live in the area. Driving about an 1 to the stadium, paying for parking, to then learn we couldn't attend the game. Looking around, I overheard many in the same situation. I'm not sure how this happened to myself and others- I assumed a voucher for a ticket meant it is guaranteed. If they decide to start selling off seats for those with vouchers, I would be more understanding if that had been communicated prior. Me and my kids were bummed but found something else to do.

    Excellent Experience!

    by JC on 7/15/23

We arrived about 1 hour before kick off time, and beat most traffic. There isn't a bad seat in the stadium. We were at the midline, about 21 rows up, but the view was incredible! The E-quakes pulled off a convincing victory over a Northwest rival, Seattle Sounders, and we beat them soundly! Great family environment, music and eating/drinking venues. Looking forward to returning soon.
