Less than average show.

With 10 Tony® nominations including Best Musical, SOMETHING ROTTEN! is a “big, fat hit!” (New York Post). Set in the ‘90s – the 1590s – this hilarious smash tells the story of Nick and Nigel Bottom (Tony® nominee Rob McClure and Broadway’s Josh Grisetti), two brothers who are desperate to write their own hit play while the “rock star” Shakespeare (Tony® nominee Adam Pascal) keeps getting all the hits. When a local soothsayer foretells that the future of theatre involves singing, dancing and acting at the same time, Nick and Nigel set out to write the world’s very first MUSICAL! With its heart on its ruffled sleeve and sequins in its soul, SOMETHING ROTTEN! is “The Producers + Spamalot + The Book of Mormon. Squared!” (New York Magazine).
High price for what amounted to a high school musical. I have attended many shows, plays, musicals at the Tennessee. This by far was a major disappointment.
First it was quite difficult to understand the songs and dialogue. Voices seems muffled. I spent way too much time trying to understand what actors were saying or singing. No I don't have a hearing issue. Loved the first half. Second half had several excellent songs and dance numbers but was too long. Really felt as if someone wanted to make sure all of us got our money's worth so they made it longer. Cut this down to 3/4 of what it was and it would be a vast improvement.
It was two and a half hours of absolute fun, music, and comedy! We loved the quick humor and the catchy songs!! Loved it and will see it again!
Saw it at Centennial Hall at UofA and in spite of the poor acoustics I could still conceive the music and a bit of the words.
A quick witted history of playwrites along with Shakespeare. Hilariously funny with puns of several other musicals thru time. See if you can name them all!!!!
Second time seeing it and it was as funny as NYC! Loved it again! Good for men and women who enjoy fast, witty musicals and great comedy!
I enjoyed the show a great deal, but the sound system at Centennial Hall is vey poor. A quick witted, heavily worded show needs a better space with more of a proper surround sound.
Something Rotten was creative with the plot and songs and music! A show that needs to be seen more than once because there are so many references that go by so fast you cannot catch them all. Costumes colorful. Characters quirky and fun!
Rotten may be my favorite now!! Wonderful songs, funny, energetic dance numbers, beautiful costumes, great set and a well put together story!
We so enjoyed "Something Rotten"... laughed all the way through. So good to actually laugh spontaneously and so often. The endorphins are still flowing several days later. Superb acting, singing and dancing.
What a fresh, fun production! Cast, costumes, and sets were wonderful and the story was upbeat and funny. Loved the Shakespeare quotes interspersed in the dialog. I would definitely see this one again. Applause for the the entire troupe!
This show was awesome, not a dry eye in the house. Ive never laughed so much. It was a mix of The Producers meets Spam a lot. So funny, definitely a must see.
Something Rotten! is excellent. Great cast, music & comedy. Mixes historic and current theater/movie productions in a special and thoughtful way.
It was a very enjoyable afternoon, and we had good seats in orchestra section. One suggestion might be to have actors equipped with mikes as it is somewhat difficult for old people to hear all dialogue.
Well...good lyrics, catchy toons, but little else. The performers gave it a great effort, but couldn’t make up for the lack of a compelling plot.
So funny combined with very talented cast made a perfect show.
The performance we attended had the understudies in a few lead roles. They were lackluster. Also, we had great seats on row 14, yet the cast had difficulty with rapid pronunciation of words and the acoustics in the building did not help. Since this show is highly based on accurate and rapid pronunciation of song and spoken lyric this led to an underwhelming performance.
Awesome show with hilarious references for audiences of all ages. The seventy-something woman sitting next to me was laughing as heartily as my teenage daughter and I were. Costuming and set design were perfection!
It was fun and lively. Often we could not understand the words so we missed some of the nuances and jokes. The story was easy to follow though. Great talent.
A silly and fun show. The actors enjoyed themselves on stage and the jokes keep coming and coming. Don't like Shakespeare? You might after this. Check it out.
